Pompano Beach, FL (January 18, 2003) - Not to be outdone by Brian
Sears five winners on Friday, Pompano Park Harness Track's leading
driver, Bruce Ranger, tied the track record again for most wins on a
single program, scoring seven wins Saturday. It was the eighth time
Ranger has won seven races on a program. Only Mickey McNichol (1983)
and Kevin Wallis (2000) have won seven races on one program, each
doing it just once.
Despite a brisk cool evening for south Florida with temperatures in
the low 40's, seven of the 12 races on the program went in 1:55 or
faster.
The fastest mile of the program was the 9th race $9,000 Open II Pace
as
The Aussie Fighter and driver Bruce Ranger swept three-wide on the
final
turn and was able to blow by pacesetter Joey Zaza (Wally Hennessey) to
win by one and three-quarter lengths in 1:52.3. Margie's Tyler (Walter
Ross, Jr.) was third. For The Aussie Fighter, it was a record mile,
lowering his previous mark of 1:58.3 by six full seconds.
In the 10th race $10,500 Open Handicap Pace, Distinctiv Skeeter and
driver Brian Sears, who had won three races earlier on the program,
shot
to the early lead with Champlain (Hennessey) sitting the pocket trip
to
the opening quarter mile in :27.3.
Corporate Rrraider and driver Peter Wrenn then came first-over before
the half in :56.4 and took the lead away from Distinctive Skeeter. The
Paper Wazoo was following the outside flow and began his move against
Corporate Rrraider at the three-quarters in 1:23.3. Talobt Advenger
and
driver Walter Ross, Jr. also got close to the action and tipped
three-wide on the final turn.
As The Paper Wazoo started down the stretch, Ross and Talbot Advenger
came right at him and the two horses battled to the wire with The
Paper
Wazoo winning by a neck in 1:53. Corporate Rrraider finished third.
It was the first win in three starts this year for The Paper Wazoo,
who
is trained by Serge Nadeau for the Ranger Stable and is owned by Fred
Monteleone of Pompano Beach. The Paper Wazoo is the local favorite for
the upcoming $250,000 Isle of Capri Pacing Series that starts in
February. The Aussie Fighter is also nominated to the Isle Series.
