Pompano Beach, FL - (December 13, 2002) - Harness driver Wally
Hennessey took the early lead in the opening night of the 3rd annual
All Star Driving Challenge at Pompano Park Harness Track Friday,
winning the 2nd race $2,700 pace with a 17-1 long shot, Ten Sea Seas
($37.40) in 1:58.3.
The 46-year-old reinsman from Coconut Creek, FL was then able to come
back later in the card to barely regain the lead by the end of the
first night of competition, 45 to 44 over Bruce Ranger.
The "Challenge" features five special races each night with nine top
drivers from North America.
Hennessey, who won the competition in 2000, closed out the first
night with 45 points. In second is Bruce Ranger with 44 followed by
David Ingraham 33, Anthony Napolitano 32, George Napolitano, Jr. 31,
Brian Sears 27, Rick Kuebler 16, Steve Warrington 15 and Herve Filion
13.
In the 2nd race, Ranger finished second with Tropic Jazz and David
Ingraham was third with Smokin Laag.
The 4th race $4,600 trot saw Anthony Napolitano win with Cedar Bluff
($11.00) in 2:00 followed by Swift Courier (Wally Hennessey) and Roll-
Away Lucky (Bruce Ranger). With his second place finish, Hennessey
was able to maintain his lead in the "Challenge" but not for long.
In the 5th race $3,500 pace Bruce Ranger and Jazz Hanover ($3.40)
overcame two early lead changes to cut the mile and win in 1:56. It
was the fourth straight win for Jazz Hanover N and the victory put
Ranger back in contention with Hennessey, who was second with Crank
Call and Brian Sears finished third with Lil Orphan Jamie.
The 8th race $4,000 pace saw David Ingraham vault into contention
with Judy In Disguise ($6.00). They made a bold four-wide move on the
final turn to win it all in 1:56.2 over Money Train (Bruce Ranger)
and The Snob N (George Napolitano, Jr.). That gave Ranger the lead by
just one point over Hennessey.
In the 10th race $3,500 pace, which was the final "Challenge" race of
the evening, M Rene Lavec ($7.00) and Brian Sears were able to score
a 2:00.3 triumph with Rose Street Rebel (George Napolitano, Jr.)
second. Hennessey was able to turn the tide for the evening with a
third place finish with Danzig Hanover.
"I'm doing way better than I thought I would going into the races
tonight" Wally Hennessey said. "I had some good post positions and
then got in the right position to get some checks and that helped me
a lot."
The two-night competition continues Saturday with five
more "Challenge" races. The winner receives $3,000 and gets to defend
his title next year, second place pays $1,500 and third place is
worth $1,000.
"Hey, tomorrow I got some live drives and you wait and see." Said
Hall of Famer Herve Filion about being in last place after the first
night. "I just love the competition and getting to see a lot of fans
at the autograph session. But I know I will do better Saturday night!"
Barbara Noble Lady ($36.60) brushed to the lead in the backstretch
for diver George Napolitano, Jr. and scored a 1:55.1 upset victory at
odds of 17-1 in winning the 7th race $9,000 Open Handicap Mares Pace.
Artist Impression (Anthony Napolitano) took the early only to give
way to race favorite Masked Ball (Bruce Ranger) by the opening
quarter mile in :28. Napolitano then came right back to the front
with Artist Impression before the half in :58.1.
But in the backstretch was when Barbara Noble Lady shot to the lead
at the three-quarter in 1:26.2 and started to draw off. The five-year-
old mare by Nobleland Sam won by two and one-quarter lengths over
Masked Ball and Artist Impression. It was her 10th win of the year
for trainer Ira Kreitzer and owner Barbara Kreitzer of West
Alexandria, Ohio.
