Pizza Dolce, driven by David Miller, overcame the outside 9th post
position to win the $370,000 Goldsmith Maid Stake for two-year-old
trotting fillies at The Meadowlands on Saturday night.
Pizza Dolce raced in mid pack throughout much of the mile, which was
lead by Stroke Play (Trond Smedshammer) at the :28.2 first quarter
and the :58.1 half. Southwind Allaire moved up on the outside to
challenge Stroke Play after the half and was at the leader's side by
the 1:29.1 three quarters. Pizza Dolce and Miller had moved up from
mid pack by the head of stretch and were angling for racing room.
Stroke Play lead down the stretch, but could not hold off Pizza
Dolce, who won in 1:58.1 by a neck.
Stroke Play (Trond Smedshammer) was second and Southwind Allaire
(John Campbell) was third. Pizza Dolce is trained by Brett Pelling
for owners David McDuffee, Peter McCann and Robert Pierz.
