Northfield, Ohio --- Walter Case, Jr. added three wins Saturday night
to his four Friday victories in the Battle of the Best to easily
outdistance Herve Filion in the 24-race competition at Northfield
Park.
In addition to a $1,000 cash prize, Case earned $1,400 in bonuses.
Each winning driver in the contest (not just Case or Filion) picked
up a $200 bonus for each race won. Filion posted three wins Friday
and picked up $600 in bonus money in addition to the $500 runner-up
prize. Drivers also received their normal 5% share of the purse.
Case clinched the Battle of the Best with a second place finish
behind Original Sam in the seventh race, which was the 21st race of
the competition. The 10 points Case earned mathematically assured him
the championship in the contest that pitted the top two winning
professional athletes (and harness drivers) in North America.
Case, a native of Maine, trailed Filion by six points when action
started Saturday, but posted three wins, three seconds and a third in
the first eight races to shut out Filion, who has 14,817 career wins.
