Anderson, IN --- After an afternoon which brought him five wins at
the Meadows, including the Coors Delvin Miller Adios Final with
Million Dollar Cam, driver John Campbell guided Art Major to victory
in the evening's featured $450,000 Hoosier Cup at Hoosier Park.
Art Major was victorious in his elimination, stopping the timer at
1:503 to equal the track record for 3-year-old pacing colts. McArdle,
who won his elimination in a time of 1:511, was included in a three
horse entry for the final with Royal Mattjesty and Art Major.
Starting from post four, Campbell sent Art Major right out for the
lead and was quickly joined by McArdle and driver Michel Lachance.
McArdle cleared Art's Major at the quarter-mile marker in :261,
giving Art Major the perfect horse to follow for the remainder of the
race. McArdle continued to keep the pace of the race brisk, passing
by the half-mile in :553 and the three-quarter mile marker in 1:24.
When the field turned for home, McArdle still had control of the
race, but Art Major was just biding his time for space to become
available to move out for the challenge. Midway through the stretch,
Art Major found the room he needed and began to grind his way toward
McArdle. McArdle held his ground with authority until the final
strides of the race as Art Major grabbed the victory by one-half
length in a time of 1:504. Art's Tribute and David Miller took
advantage of a second-over journey to close in well for third.
"McArdle is a very nice horse and I knew he would carry us into the
last part of this race," said Campbell. "He was doing all he could to
get by McArdle. He raced very well to get the victory."
Owned by Sampson Street Stable, TLP Stable, Deena Frost, and Jerry
Silva, Art Major now has more than $381,000 in career earnings. His
time of 1:503 in his elimination is his best career mile to date. The
Artsplace colt joins his full brother, Perfect Art, as a Hoosier Cup
winner. Perfect Art was the winner of the inaugural event in 1997.
The sixth edition of the Hoosier Cup capped the richest night of
horse racing in the state of Indiana. In all, purses totaled more
than $1.5 million for the 14 race program. Total attendance for the
evening was 3,860, the second largest crowd for Hoosier Cup Night
behind the 3,883 who attended the 2000 event.
