Napoli Turn To Obinna After Cruz Disappointment
The Nigerian international may complete a transfer to Naples after all...
5 Jul 2009 14:56:55
Napoli, having lost out on the race to sign free-agent Julio Cruz, will now turn
their attention back to Inter striker Victor Obinna, according to Datasport.

The player had been linked with Napoli earlier this summer, but the southern
Italian outfit opted to try for different options instead, including Lazio's
Goran
Pandev and the previously mentioned Cruz. However, these potential
moves have not panned out and it appears the Obinna move could be back
on.

With Uruguayan striker Marcelo Zalayeta possibly joining
Bari, the Partenopei are looking for someone to complete a trident
attack, along with Ezequiel Lavezzi and Fabio Quagliarella.

Obinna
did not have many opportunities to shine with the Nerazzurri last
season, only making nine appearances in total, but Napoli believe the
speedy striker would be an asset.

The 22-year-old could leave the San Siro for as little as €4 million.

Dont
get me wrong I like Cruz and his talent, vast experiance is needed for
the Europa push, but he's is like the Luca Toni of 1 or 2 years backs
he can't play second striker hes not that mobile and hes 34/35 this
year if im right, even this may be a risk 1 year or 2 at the most left?
On top of this don't count on Denis staying if he and especially
Pandev/Obinna join the team, he shouldnt be for sale period a loan deal
is ideal because once Cruz retires we have no Big Punta.

Attackers:
Denis
Quagliarella
Inacio Pia
Lavezzi
Bogliacino
Pandev/Obinna ?

Things
are heating up!! The new name for the left back position is Francesco
Modesto of Genoa. Modesto started only 9 games this year and would like
to be a full time starter. Marino has been after this player for over a
year now. Maybe this is the right time to finally snatch him. Honestly,
if they get this player, this would be the sickest transfer edition
since the days of Zola.Modesto is one of the best in his role and also
a pure left back. Were a few sick signining away from becoming better
than fiorentina. Mudingayi is probably the new incontrista since
bologna's sporting director is adamant of receiving Pazienza in
exchange for this African tribal defensive midfielder. 3 more players
are on their way. i hope Mudingayi, modesto and Cruz complete the
transfer window...They have the characteristics we need to complete the
remaining breeches.

The
oldest player on the team right now is 27. Cruz appears to be less
mobile than the guys we have. But unlike denis, He has a great record
when hes called upon and makes a difference when hes on the pitch. His
CV speaks for itself oh frat. He will easily score 15 goals next year
if he starts regularly. I can just imagine the crazy triple combo he
will make with Lavezzi and Quagliarete.

Napoli Sign Goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis
The southern Italian outfit have found an established name to fill the vacancy
between the posts...
24 Jun 2009 22:27:54

According to Sky, Napoli have signed goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis from Sevilla
who is expected to be their first choice keeper in the 2009-10 season.

The shot stopper never settled in Sevilla since joining the club in 2007 and was
subsequently loaned to Galatasaray for the 2008-09 campaign, where he enjoyed
some success, being called up as Italy third-choice goalkeeper on a number of
occasions.

Napoli have reportedly beaten off competition from Genoa for his signature and
the 32-year-old will sign a three-year deal with the Partenopei.

De Sanctis has also played for Pescara and Juventus during his career, but his
best spell was with Udinese, where he made a name for himself with over 200
appearances between 1999 and 2007.

Napoli have already signed Fabio Quagliarella this summer and are looking to
reinforce the squad after falling well short of expectations this past season.

De Ceglie Has Signed For Napoli
17 Jun 2009 01:55:10
Juventusto Napolifor a number of weeks now, and despite the fact that there is
still yet to be any official confirmation on the move going through, the Italian
media believe that the deal is as good as done.

According to the reports from Corriere dello Sport, the two clubs have agreed to
go ahead with the deal and all that is left to be finalised is the transfer fee,
which will be discussed at a meeting later tonight.

De Ceglie is expected to cost the Partenopei a figure of around €4-5 million,
which will see his second stint with the Bianconeri come to an end.

The 22-year-old was a member of the Juve youth squad, before playing his first
game with the senior team in 2006. He was then sent to Siena, on a co-ownership
deal, only to immediately return to the Old Lady the season after. After a
further season with the club, he now looks destined to leave for good.

Napoli Will Sign At Least Three More Stars – President De Laurentiis
The chief of the Partenopei has set his sights on a few more important
acquisitions for next season.
17 Jun 2009 02:00:15
Napoliwere on the receiving end of one of the first key transfers of the summer
period when they managed to sign Fabio Quagliarella from Udinese.

Since then, they have been fairly quiet on the transfer front; however,
according to their president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, at least three more star
players will join the club in the coming months.

“We are working on a radical reformation at the moment, as we know that we
must make this team more competitive for the future,” De Laurentiis affirmed
in an interview with SkySport24.

“We want to sign at least three more star players, including Sampdoria’s
[Hugo] Campagnaro, who we are very close to. Until he actually signs with us and
goes through his medical though, we shouldn’t really say much.

“We are in the ‘pre-market’ stage, so we are expecting to make a move for
him early in July.”

The president continued by discussing those that he would like to add in attack,
following the addition of Quagliarella to the squad.

He said, “We need even more in attack, so we are tracking a number of key
players from various clubs.

“[Sergio] Pellissier? Chievo do not intend to sell the player; however, we
have spoken to him and he seems keen to move to Naples.

“Although I think the possibility of this happening is remote, we are hoping
to convince [Antonio] Di Nataleto join our club to reunite with Quagliarella
from Udinese.

“[Goran] Pandev? We are prepared to offer [Mariano] Bogliacino, [Leandro]
Rinaudo and money.”

It’s clear that the Azzurri are focusing on adding further depth to their
attacking ranks, which could suggest that they are expecting their star
Argentine, Ezequiel Lavezzi, to leave at some stage this summer.

Milan To Replace Kaka With Napoli Ace Ezequiel Lavezzi

The Rossoneri have laid eyes on Lavezzi for life after Kaka...
4 Jun 2009 09:04:23
Milan are targeting Napoli ace Ezequiel Lavezzi as a direct replacement
for Kaka should the Brazilian join Real Madrid, according to Sportmediaset.it.

Vice president Adriano Galliani claimed earlier in an interview with La Gazzetta
Dello Sport that the club would buy a big striker following Kaka's probable
sale,
and this has led to the widespread belief that 'El Pocho' will be
dragged in.

The report suggests Lavezzi has fallen out with the
Azzurri following his recent dash to Argentina, where he claimed he
felt a lack of respect from the club.

With Napoli's hold on
Lavezzi looking vulnerable, Milan are ready to pounce. In addition,
Silvio Berlusconi enjoys a good relationship with Aurelio De
Laurentiis, and this could prove pivotal in swinging the deal in the
Rossoneri's favour.

However, despite Italian reports claiming
Milan are buzzing around the player, suggestions in England claim
Liverpool are also keen on the Argentine and even had a €22 million bid
rejected.

Despite Napoli's claims that the player is not for
sale, voices imply a deal around €25m would suffice. Napoli coach
Roberto Donadoni is keen on Marco Borriello, and he could be worked
into the deal for Lavezzi.

But, before any move can happen, Kaka
has to join Real Madrid. Although the Rossoneri have confirmed a deal
with Real is in full swing, the decision to stay or go remains with the
Brazilian.

NAPOLI CHASE UDINESE DUO DI NATALE AND ZAPATA
________________________________

Woensdag 10 Juni 06:07
The Azzurri are among the most
active teams in the transfer market so far, and their favourite victims
at this point seem to be the Friulani.
Napoli are preparing to make another raid upon Udinese, as coach Roberto
Donadoni wants to lure in Antonio Di Natale in order to re-form the successful
attacking duo with Fabio Quagliarella.

However, Di Natale is not the only Bianconeri player who could join the
Partenopei, as Cristian Zapata is also on Donadoni's wish list, according to
Sportmediaset.it.

In
order to sign the Colombian defender, the Azzurri are ready to offload
some players and cash, as they believe blindly in Zapata's qualities,
even though it might take a lot of negotiation before the two clubs
reach a financial agreement.

Donadoni wants his team to play
with a 3-4-3 formation next season and for this reason he is targeting
specific players for specific roles, in a bid to improve upon Napoli's
ultimately disappointing 2008-09 campaign.

"It will be a sunday I never will forget". Francesco Montervino finishes in
great way the championship scoring his first goal in premier league. A great
satisfaction for the blue captain, one of the men who has started the De

"I am happy, I think this is the prize for 5 years in the whiches we have led
again the Napoli at the top. It is not a case that I have scored and then
Bogliacino and Pi who are elements who belong to the historical group of the
second division. We have finished a winning cycle and now another cycle will be
opened that I think will be made of successes. I hope to be here because the
Napoli has been the most beautiful experience of my life".
At the end a wisecrack as captain about Lavezzi. "The Pocho is in the people's
heart. I say to the supporters he is a leader and an idol who gives the best for
this shirt. You will see he will make to dream the Neapolitan for many years..."

Napoli ended
the season with a rare victory, but it wasn't enough to stop the fans
protesting.
The atmosphere
was tense at the San Paolo, as the Partenopei had their last chance to end the
season on a high. New Coach Roberto Donadoni had managed just one win since
taking charge, losing three of the last four, and Ezequiel Lavezzi demanded a
transfer to Liverpool if his wages were not tweaked. The Flying Donkeys were in
celebratory mood after securing their safety last week and this was their first
ever Serie A visit to Naples.
Daniele
Mannini was suspended with Christian Maggio, Paolo Cannavaro, Michele Pazienza,
Marco Malago', Stephen Makinwa and Fabio Moro injured. Napoli were jeered as
they walked out on to the field for kick-off and banners criticised the club for
its decisions.
The scoring
was opened four minutes in when Francesco Montervino rifled a shot into the top
corner from just inside the box, giving 33-year-old goalkeeper Aldegani a
disappointing Serie A debut.
Mariano
Bogliacino doubled the advantage soon after, as Inacio Pia' cut back for the
Uruguayan to smash under the bar from nine yards.
Inacio Pia'
made it 3-0, as he got in front of Mandelli to tap in a Vitale cross from the
left.
Chievo did
play some part in the game, as Navarro palmed a Colucci curler out for a corner
and then the goalkeeper got down well to turn Sergio Pellissier's daisy-cutter
round the post.
In the second
half Gianello needed an open-handed save to tip Gennaro Sardo's left-foot strike
on to the crossbar.
The final
stages were marred by protests from the Napoli fans, who repeatedly threw smoke
bombs on to the pitch.

Fabio Quagliarella & Luca Cigarini To Sign For Napoli Tomorrow
The Vesuviani are set to complete the first two acquisitions of the close
season...

Atalanta midfielder Luca Cigarini and Udinese striker Fabio Quagliarella will
put pen to paper on their new Napoli contracts tomorrow, according to
TuttoNapoli.net.
Rumours started on Friday and the duo are expected in
Naples on Monday to undergo a medical and sign on the dotted line, before being
presented to the press by the end of the week.
It is suggested that Napoli will pay around €11 million
for Cigarini’s services that are co-owned by Atalanta and Parma.
The Partenopei had already struck a deal with the Orobici
who will get €4m in cash plus the full rights to defender Gyorgy Garics, while
Parma have settled for €5.5m.
Quagliarella will cost the Campani around €16m in cash
plus the remaining half of defender Maurizio Domizzi who joined the Friulans in
a co-ownership deal last summer.
Napoli have beaten off fierce competition from the likes
of Juventus and Inter to secure the services of the Italian international
striker, who was born in the province of Naples and has always stressed his
support for the Azzurri colours.

Catania v Napoli: Preview

Updated: May 23, 2009, 9:10 AM UK
Napoli coach Roberto Donadoni has called for his side to finish off a
disappointing season with two wins.
The
Partenopei travel to Sicily to meet Catania tomorrow afternoon having
mustered just one triumph in their last 18 league games.
Donadoni's side are coming off a 2-1 defeat against Torino that saw the team
drop to 13th in the standings.
It
was one of Napoli's worst performances of the year and the home fans
were so disenchanted that many booed the team at the end of the game.
"I
can understand the fans' frustration,'' said Donadoni, who replaced Edy
Reja at the helm in March. "I expect my players to give high-level
performances and play better in our next games against Catania and
Chievo, something they have not done for some time.''
Napoli
finished eighth last term to qualify for the Intertoto Cup but at no
time have they shown the same type of quality to contend for a place in
Europe next season.
They did manage to beat champions Inter Milan on April 26 but most of the
Napoli displays have been below par.
"There is a lot to build on from this year and there are the means to do it,''
admitted Donadoni.
"Our recent performances have made me realise many things and now we must try to
see what is out there and what we can afford.
"It's clear to me and to everyone else that we need to bring in reinforcements.
"I am optimistic that we can have a strong team next season because I speak to
the club executives every day.
"There
is a lot of competition for top players and we have to know where our
limit is and know that you don't always get what you want.''
Rivals Catania go into the match also looking to return to winning ways.
Walter
Zenga's side have been criticised for losing their motivation this
season in which their chief goal was to avoid immediate relegation back
to Serie B.
Four consecutive defeats, including last weekend's
4-2 loss at Roma, have left the Sicilians stuck on 40 points, 10 short
of the target Zenga set his side a month ago.
But the coach has denied suggestions his team is already thinking about the
holidays.
He said: "It's true the team appears to have been in a relaxed mode since
securing our Serie A status.
"But perhaps that is due to the fact that we have in recent weeks paid a price
for a hard season.
"No-one
could have predicted that Catania would have the luxury of securing its
top flight status two months prior to the end of the season because
that has never happened before.
"We will now look to end the campaign on a high note.''
Napoli
welcome back their top scorer Ezequiel Lavezzi for tomorrow's clash
following a month on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

Napoli Did Reject Liverpool Bid Says Ezequiel Lavezzi's Agent
The
agent has shed more light on Liverpool's moves to land the Argentine,
confirming that an initial bid was rejected but hinting that the player
could be tempted to leave by a mega wage package...
23 May 2009 11:58:13
Ezequiel Lavezzi's agent Eduardo Rossetto has confirmed that Napoli did
reject a Liverpool bid for the hitman, but he admits the striker could
still end up leaving, if a club satisfies Aurelio De Laurentiis'
demands.

"Napoli own the player, and they have the last word," the agent told La Gazzetta
Dello Sport.

"I can confirm that an important offer exceeding €20million was made, but De
Laurentiis did not consider it sufficient."

Despite
Napoli rejecting the bid, Rossetto believes his client may end up
leaving eventually, especially if Liverpool up their offer. The agent
hinted that the Reds have offered to triple his wages.

"Will he stay? That depends on Napoli. It's like owning a car. If it's just an
average motor then you don't have to spend much on maitainence.

"But,
if it's a high spec type, then it will cost you more," added the agent,
in reference to Napoli's costs of keeping their man.

"Without going into too much detail, Lavezzi's wages would be tripled."

Dear supporters,
I have decided to write this letter to express my biterness after the
episode of of the last sunday at the San Paolo of the which I am protagonist. I
am very much pained for the protest turned to me. I think I do not deserve those
whistles neither a such attitude.
In the past I never had flip acts towords the supporters and I always have
accepted any kind of criticism. You have the right to applaude when we win and
to whistle when we lose. It is right to contest a wrong or a bad performance but
I can not accept to be the target of a rage that for me is friut of an
inexplicable prejudice.
You know my love towords this shirt. It does not need to explain to you what the
Napoli and Naples mean for me. I have always given the best for them and I
always have expose on and out the field to testify my passion for my city.
Who knows me well, starting from my playmates, knows what are the values and the
professionalism that have inspired and distinguished from always my soccer
career.
When I am returned at Naples, not only I have espouse a plan, but I have
fulfiled a dream and embraced my great ambition: to win with my loved team.
I feel still today the shivers felt during the promotion in premier league. And
just in those moments of joy I have undersood that for me this is not a simple
shirt but a secon skin.
This message is a way to express my feelings and the love I have for 'my'
people.
As Neapolitan and as first  Napoli supporters, like I think to be, I always
will give the best for our cause. I would like to do it sharing with you the
joy, the suffering, the passion, the sacrifices, the emotions and the love for
our extraordinary city. To play for the blue shirt is all my life.
Pride to be Neapolitan

Napoli 1–2 Torino

Relegation-threatened Torino are approaching their final games of the season
with some trepidation as they try to preserve their Serie A status. The Granata
were just one place and one point clear of the drop zone ahead of this encounter
against Napoli. The Partenopei went into the match in 13th position and with
nothing to play for except pride, as a run of bad results left them 11 points
behind Roma, who hold the last European qualifying spot.

The game began slowly, but shortly before half time Pia sent the home side into
the lead after receiving a pass from Denis and dribbling around the keeper
before slotting the ball into the goal. In the second half Rolando Bianchi
turned in another of his fine goals, receiving the ball in the box before
spinning around and finishing into the bottom corner of the goal. But the game
was not over yet, and in the 71st minute a fantastically placed free kick from
Rosina beat the Napoli keeper, allowing Torino to win 2-1 and gain valuable
relegation points.

Napoli 1 - 2 Torino
Pia' 41 (N), Bianchi 51 (T), Rosina 71 (T)
Stadio San Paolo
Alessandro Rosina's marvellous free kick gave Torino their first away win of the
season and a big step towards safety.
There was a huge difference in motivation for this game, as Napoli have clearly
run out of steam since falling out of the race for Europe, while Toro were
teetering on the edge of relegation. Roberto Donadoni's record on the Partenopei
bench was of one win, five draws and two defeats. Vitale's ban added to the
absentee list of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Walter Gargano, Christian Maggio and Gennaro
Iezzo. The Granata missed Eugenio Corini, Marco Di Loreto, Paolo Zanetti and
Elvis Abbruscato.
Navarro got down to push a Rolando Bianchi strike round the base of the post,
then another Bianchi effort stung the goalkeepers' palms in a counter set up by
Blerim Dzemaili. He also kept out Alessandro Rosina's free kick.
Napoli sat back and eventually took the lead. Inacio Pia' combined with a cheeky
German Denis backheel flick to run through the Toro defence and waltzed round
Sereni.
Toro made two substitutions, but Francesco Pratali's was forced by an injury.
The other - Roberto Stellone - was decisive as he headed on a long ball for
Bianchi to spin round his marker and fire in the equaliser.
Pia' almost got a second on 54 minutes when he pounced on Colombo's error, but
only nodded wide of the target.
Sereni horribly fumbled a Daniele Mannini effort, but both Denis and Jesus
Datolo failed to make the most of the loose ball amid chaotic scenes.
Russotto came off the bench and immediately drilled just wide from a Denis
assist.
However, Torino took the lead with a magnificent Alessandro Rosina free kick.
From almost 30 metres out he curled it over the wall with his left foot and
dipped past Navarro. Curiously it was his first goal of the season that wasn't a
penalty.
Sereni had to fingertip a Mannini cross-shot out from under the bar, but he had
an even better reaction save three minutes from time to deny a deflected Datolo
free kick. He was so amazed by the save he looked to the heavens and did the
sign of the cross!

Roberto Donadoni:“If you look at the scoring opportunities we created, I think
it is clear we did not deserve to lose. We should've done better at dealing with
our lead.”

The relegation battlers need to record a victory on the road in order to ease
their fears of relegation…
15 May 2009 03:00:30
Kick-Off: Sunday 17 May, 15:00 CET. San Paolo Stadium, Naples.

Must-Win For The Azzurri

Napolirecorded their first victory under new bossRoberto Donadoni three weeks
ago, when they stunned the reigning champions Inter 1-0 at the San Paolo stadium
to snap an ugly 14-match winless run.

With 43 points recorded to this point, the Partenopei have very little to play
for, as they cannot be relegated, nor can they qualify for Europe next season.
Thus, pride is the thing at stake for them in this clash.

Nevertheless, Donadoni will want to end his season with the club on a high, so
expect them to come out firing this weekend against a team that have desperately
struggled to win on the road over the past two seasons.

The Azzurri’s home record is fairly sold this term, as they have managed nine
wins and five draws in 17 matches to date. Quite remarkably, though, prior to
their triumph over Inter, Donadoni’s men had failed to attain all three points
in front of their own fans for over three months.

Despite everything that has been said, Napoli will not want to lose against a
side that have performed so poorly away from home over the past two seasons. It
would be an extremely disappointing way for them to close out the season, so
they should be fired up to record a rare victory this weekend.

Season-Defining For Toro

Torinoare currently in 17th place in the Serie A, with 31 points to their name,
meaning that they are just one point above the relegation zone. To their credit,
they have managed to record seven points in their past five matches - a
commendable effort for a team that have struggled for most of the campaign.

The equation is simple for the Granata this weekend: they simply must win to
give themselves any hope of avoiding the drop to Serie B. With two difficult
matches against Genoa and Roma to come, Giancarlo Camolese’s men must dig deep
and win away from homefor the first time in more than two seasons.

Their record away from the Stadio Olimpico this term is the worst in the league
by far, as they have managed no wins and six draws from 17 matches, whilst they
have only scored 12 times along the way.

Bologna and Lecce are Toro’s nearest rivals in the standings at present, and
coincidentally those two sides are set to square off in the corresponding round
of fixtures this weekend. With this in mind, further pressure is placed on the
visitors in this match, as one would think that another defeat would make it
hard for them to avoid relegation.

TEAM NEWS

Napoli

Donadoni’s concerns on the injury front continue this weekend, as the likes of
Walter Gargano, Cristian Maggio, Leandro Rinaudo and Gennaro Iezzo are all out
for the remainder of the season. In addition to this, Ezequiel Lavezzi looks
likely to miss out yet again as he continues his personal battle with injury,
whilst Luigi Vitale will miss the clash through suspension, after accumulating
too many yellow cards throughout the season.

Possible Starting XI – (3-5-2): Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini;
Montervino, Blasi, Datolo, Hamsik, Mannini; Pia, Denis.

Torino

Camolese will be without several key players, as Elvis Abbruscato, Eugenio
Corini, Marco Di Loreto, Nicola Ventola and Paolo Zanetti are all out injured.

Some better news for Toro surrounds the return of the club’s No. 1 goalkeeper,
Matteo Sereni, who will take his place in the starting lineup, after serving a
one-match ban. Angelo Ogbonna also returns from suspension, but he may have to
make do with a place on the bench.

Possible Starting XI – (3-4-1-2):Sereni, Franceschini, Natali, Pisano; Rubin,
Barone, Dzemaili, Diana; Rosina; Bianchi, Stellone.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Napoli – German Denis: With Lavezzi and other key players missing in action as
a result of injury yet again, the pressure will be on this man to do the damage
up front for the Azzurri. They have struggled in front of the sticks lately and
will need their burly targetman to lift if they want to finish the season on a
high.

Torino – Alessandro Rosina: The captain of the Granata has been criticised and
pressured throughout the course of the season, and as a result he will need to
be at his best to not only reclaim the respect of the tifosi, but also to ensure
that his side avoid relegation by bagging their first victory on the road in a
very long time.

PREDICTION

It will be a low-scoring affair in Naples this weekend, and one goal may be
enough to separate the two sides. The home side’s knack for not winning, and
the visitors’ inability to claim victory on the road, surely means that this
one will end all square.

NAPOLI Fail To Win Once Again

Lecce 1–1 Napoli

Before this encounter the Salentini were two points adrift of 17th-placed Torino
with four games remaining, and after this match against Napoli they still have
difficult fixtures against Bologna, Fiorentina and Genoa to deal with. Lecce
have taken only four points in their last six games and the situation is
becoming increasingly desperate despite a 2-2 draw with Juventus last week.
Astonishingly the Partenopei have collected just one win in their last 16 games
and find themselves in a disappointing 12th position heading into this game.

Both of these sides were desperate for a win, but it was Napoli the made an
impact in the 33rd minute, scoring from a counter attack through Pia after good
work from Datolo. Lecce would tie things up before half time however, as
Zanchetta converted a penalty in the 43rd minute.

Donadoni Praises Napoli Despite Draw With Lowly Lecce
After watching his side battle for a point against Lecce, the former Italy coach
remained positive about his side’s progression…
10 May 2009 16:39:08

Despite having to settle for a 1-1 draw, the Azzurri coach praised his side when
speaking to SkyItalia and said that he though they fought very hard for a point
against struggler's Lecce.

“We gave everything out there today, despite suffering at times. Overall, I am
happy with the character my boys showed against a side fighting for survival.
Today I have to praise my side, as they showed me what I’m looking for.”

The former Milan winger was then asked to explain the in-depth discussions
between staff and players that are reported to have taken place during the week.
“We only went over some of the errors, to clarify how to solve some of the
problems of the past few weeks. Today we got back on track and against a
struggling side, this wasn’t so easy.”

As rumours over the future of key man Marek Hamsik continue to circulate,
Donadoni concluded by denying the player had been dropped.
“I only left Hamsik on the bench in order to evaluate some other players that
I haven’t had a chance to see in action up to now. I was given a good response
this afternoon and I will most probably do the same against Torino next
weekend.”

Preview: Lecce - Napoli
The relegation battlers must defeat an inconsistent Neapolitan outfit this
weekend in order to ease their fears of the drop…
8 May 2009 03:20:00
Kick-Off: Sunday 10 May, 15:00 CET. Via del Mare Stadium, Lecce.

Win Or Bust

Lecce have desperately struggled for form over the past few months, which has
consequently led many to believe that they are near certainties to return to the
second division after just one season in the top flight. In fact, there was a
period recently where they failed to win a single match in ten rounds of
football.

However, recent results have given them a glimmer of hope, and one would imagine
that they will need to win at least two of their remaining four matches to
maintain their Serie A status next term.

The Salentini currently sit in a precarious 19th position, with just 28 points
recorded from the 34 rounds of football played to date. However, they have
managed positive results against Catania and Juventus recently to keep their
dreams of salvation alive.

Unfortunately for the coach, Luigi De Canio, he will have to do without several
key players through injury, which will only make his side’s task all the more
difficult this weekend.

They were comprehensively beaten 3-0 the last time these two side’s met
earlier in the campaign, but if they are to play with the same passion and
determination that they have shown recently, then anything could happen against
a side that have little to play for.

Playing For Pride

Napoli recorded their first victory under new boss Roberto Donadoni two weeks
ago, when they stunned the reigning champions, Inter, 1-0 at the San Paolo
stadium whilst snapping an ugly 14-match winless run in the process.

With 42 points recorded to this point, the Partenopei have very little to play
for, as they cannot be relegated, nor can they qualify for Europenext season.
With this in mind, pride is the thing at stake for them in this clash.

Nevertheless, Donadoni will want to end his season with the club on a high, so
expect them to come out firing this weekend. But if the Azzurri’s record on
the road is anything to go by, an extremely difficult encounter awaits them at
the Via del Mare stadium on Sunday.

In fact, Napoli have failed to win a single match on the road since way back in
October 2008, when they edged Lazio 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Since
then, they have gone on to pick up two draws and ten defeats, meaning that they
have failed to win in 12 matches away from home.

With so much to play for in this match for Lecce, and with a number of concerns
up front for the visitors, it will be interesting to see just how determined the
Azzurri are to take three points back to Naples.

TEAM NEWS

Lecce: Their results on the field have dramatically improved in recent times;
however, the same cannot be said for the happenings off it at present. De Canio
will be without Daniele Cacia, Vitorino Antunes, Angelo and Papa Waigo through
injury. Gianni Munari has made a successful recovery from a shoulder problem
though, and he is expected to play some part in this match.

Possible Starting XI – (4-4-2): Benussi; Polenghi, Fabiano, Esposito,
Giuliatto; Giacomazzi, Edinho, Vives, Ariatti; Konan, Tiribocchi.

Napoli: Donadoni has a few selection headachesfor this particular match,
especially up front. He is still without Ezequiel Lavezzi, despite reports
earlier in the week suggesting that the Argentine may make a faster than
expected recovery. In addition to this, Marcelo Zalayeta will never play a match
at the club again, under Donadoni’s reign, after his failure to attend
training, but German Denis is set to return from a muscular strain.

To make matters worse for the Partenopei, Walter Gargano will miss through
injury, and he will join the likes of Cristian Maggio, Leandro Rinaudo and
Gennaro Iezzo on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.

Possible Starting XI – (3-5-2): Navarro; Santacroce, Cannavaro, Contini;
Montervino, Blasi, Amodio, Hamsik, Mannini; Pia, Denis.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Lecce – Simone Tiribocchi: The Roman-born player has scored eight of his
side’s 33 goals this season and is undoubtedly their strongest player in
attack, meaning that he will have to be at his best to ensure that his side
attain all three points. He was the man responsible for guiding the club to the
top flight last term; now he must do all he can to prevent them from going
straight back down.

Napoli – German Denis: With Lavezzi missing in action once again through
injury, the pressure will be on this man to do the damage up front for the
Azzurri. Despite the fact that they have little to play for, they will be keen
to end the season on a high, and the way to do this will be to score, an area in
which they have been desperately struggling in recently.

PREDICTION

It will be interesting to see what happens in Lecce this weekend, as the
relegation battlers will consider this match to be one that they should win. The
visitors have been extremely inconsistent and have struggled in front of goal,
so with this in mind, I’m expecting the home side to just get over the line.

Siena secured safety and also ensured Napoli's revival was short-lived, as
Houssine Kharja scored a splendid opener.
Roberto Donadoni finally celebrated his first win on the Partenopei bench by
beating Inter 1-0 last week, ending a four-month drought. The Coach criticised
his squad for only finding the right motivation against the leaders, so this
trip to practically safe Siena was a test of that mettle. Ezequiel Lavezzi's
thigh strain added to the injury list with Walter Gargano, Christian Maggio,
Leandro Rinaudo and Gennaro Iezzo. Siena missed Luca Rossettini, but welcomed
back Gianluca Curci.
Napoli goalkeeper Navarro almost committed a howler when his clearance hit
Houssine Kharja and ricocheted back towards the goal.
Siena took the lead with a splendid solo effort from Kharja. He ran all the way
from his own half and took on scared defenders with his right foot before
shifting to his left for a thunderbolt.
Massimo Maccarone drilled over and Marcelo Zalayeta's shot was charged down by
Daniele Portanova, but Siena made it 2-0. The Napoli defence was caught
ball-watching as Zuniga crossed low from the byline for Maccarone to smash under
the bar from six yards.
Galloppa's free kick was smothered, but Maccarona should've made it 3-0 on the
stroke of half-time when he skipped past Fabiano Santacroce only to fire
straight at Navarro.
Gianluca Curci got down to block substitute German Denis' effort from distance
and Jesus Datolo also tested the goalkeeper for the first time after an hour of
play.
Ghezzal could have had a third on 75 minutes when he dribbled between two
defenders and his shot squirmed beneath Navarro, but Santacroce got back for a
goalline clearance.
Napoli did get one back 10 minutes from time, as substitute goalkeeper Emanuele
Manitta did not come out in time to block a Datolo free kick, allowing Inacio
Pia' a looping header. Manitta had just come on two minutes earlier due to
Curci's slight thigh twinge.

Donadoni Takes Blame For Napoli Defeat
The former Italy coach was quick to protect his players following their
disappointing response to last weekend’s victory over Inter…
3 May 2009 17:10:42
Former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni takes his first game in charge of Napoli
Napoli came crashing back down to earth this afternoon, with a defeat at the
hands of Siena and, despite calls for an overhaul in the squad, Roberto Donadoni
remained level headed when he spoke to SkyItalia in the post-match interview.

“From the moment that we were no longer in the race for the Champions League,
we have to realise that we can lose to sides such as Bologna, Siena and all the
teams that are amongst us in the standings," said the Milan legend.

“There is no need to rebuild the side. Last week we weren’t world beaters
and this week we aren’t a side in need of a total overhaul. Napoli just needs
to find a balance that has been missing over the course of the season," he
added.

Donadoni then looked to take the blame and shield his side in his match
analysis.
“Today, we produced an ugly performance and I am the first to take blame for
this. The team was the same as the one that won last Sunday night against Inter.
We just didn’t have the same cutting edge out there and there is work to be
done to make this side a complete package.”

Napoli remain in mid-table obscurity, lying twelfth in the standings on 42
points.
