Albanians await Napoli Friday 1 August, 2008

________________________________

Napoli have been handed Albanian minnows Vllaznia Shkoder in the UEFA Cup second
qualifying round.

Edy Reja’s men secured a return to European competition after 14 years in
exile by beating Greek outfit Panionios in the Intertoto Cup.

But if they want to play any part in the competition proper, the Vesuviani will
have to negotiate Albanian minnows Vllaznia Shkoder.

Vllaznia finished seventh in the Albanian League last term but entered the UEFA
Cup courtesy of lifting the Cup.

They narrowly saw off Slovenian side FC Koper 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for
this stage of the competition.

Napoli will be very confident of progressing to the first round where they will
join Sampdoria, Milan and Udinese.

The ties will be played on August 14 away and August 28 in Naples.

The draw in full:

Siroki Brijeg v Besiktas
Braga v Zrinjski

Napoli conquer AthensPanionios 0-1 NapoliNapoli had a splendid Intertoto
debut by winning 1-0 away to Panionios despite Leandro Rinaudo's red card.It
was their first European tie since 1994 and quite an achievement considering
the club was bankrupt and relegated to Serie C just three years ago. Fabiano
Santacroce was injured and Ezequiel Lavezzi on international duty, so summer
signing Leandro Rinaudo made his official debut in defence. The home side
threatened early on, as just 120 seconds in former Inter benchwarmer Lampros
Choutos cracked an effort against the crossbar and later had a goal
disallowed for a clear offside position.Gustavo Denis hit back and skimmed
the target on Walter Gargano's assist and goalkeeper Kresic palmed away a
Mariano Bogliacino strike.Napoli took the lead with what could be a crucial
away goal on the half-hour mark. Denis was instrumental, as he cut back past
Maniatis on the edge of the box and threaded through for Bogliacino's
(pictured) smart finish.Panionios tried to get back into it before the
break, but once again Kumordzi clipped the crossbar.Gennaro Iezzo was called
upon to deny the dangerous Choutos from close range straight after the
restart, but Argentine Denis was in fine form and turned a header just wide
before Kresic performed a desperate save.Rinaudo's debut was not exactly one
to remember, as he was sent off with 14 minutes left of this first leg tie,
picking up a second yellow card.Nonetheless, Napoli almost doubled their
advantage moments later, as Inacio Pia set up a chance for Denis that was
charged down by some desperate defending.Denis also hit the back of the net
in the final minute, but it was ruled offside. Napoli can take this result
with them to the second leg at the Stadio San Paolo on July 26.Panionios 0-1

Napoli Close In On Young Star Russotto
The Vesuviani seem to have finally found the young gun that will play second
fiddle to Ezequiel Lavezzi. Reports suggest that the hugely talented Andrea
Russotto will head for Naples after taking part in the Beijing Olympics.
Napoli's sporting director Pierpaolo Marino is on the verge of pulling off
another major coup for the Partenopei. Sky Sport Italia reported last night that
Andrea Russotto is about to complete a move to the southern outfit from Treviso.
Russotto is currently with the Italian Olympic team, where he is held in high
esteem by both Pierluigi Casiraghi and Gianfranco Zola.
The 20-year-old is a Lazio youth product, but unexpectedly turned his back on
the Biancocelesti and moved to Swiss side Bellinzona in 2004. For the last two
seasons he has played in Serie B with Treviso.
His impressive performances soon earned him a call-up to the U21 setup, and his
immense talent was also recognized by World Soccer Magazine who named the Roman
native in their list of the top 50 world's best young players.
Russotto can play as both a trequartista and a winger and he has all the
qualities to amaze the San Paolo faithful, but will probably have to work his
way up at the club, since Edy Reja and Marino see him as a future asset that
needs to be nurtured, for the time being.
In the meantime Napoli continue their preparations for the Intertoto Cup match
against Panionios: last night the Azzurri drew 1-1 with Hungarian side
Zalaegerszeg, with Inacio Pi cancelling out Rbert Waltner's opener. New
recruit German Denis hit the post in the dying minutes.

Napoli's Hungarian stalemate
Tuesday 15 July, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Napoli drew 1-1 with Hungarian top flight side Zalaegerszeg, although were
unlucky when German Denis thumped the post.
The Azzurri wanted a stern test ahead of Sunday's Intertoto Cup clash with
Panionios and went to this team because the Hungarian League kicks off on July
27.
Meye set up the opener for Waltner on the half-hour mark and five minutes later
wasted the chance to make it 2-0, blasting a penalty over the bar for Amodio's
foul on Toth.
Inacio Pia wasted a good opportunity to equalise and eventually secured a draw
for Napoli just before the break.
The Argentine gathered Roberto De Zerbi's pass and skipped round the goalkeeper
to deposit into an empty net.
Summer signing Denis was again impressive, as he took part in a splendid team
move that forced the Hungarian shot-stopper into a great save on Christian
Maggio.
In the final minutes Denis nodded a free kick on to the upright.
“I am satisfied with the way the team has grown and progressed tactically,”
said Coach Edy Reja.
“We are starting to have a good tempo, get the shape and movement of the side
right and the correct positions on the pitch.
“It is a positive performance that allows us to look forward with optimism.”
Napoli first half: Gianello, Santacroce, Rinaudo, Savini, Montervino, Pazienza,
Amodio, Dalla Bona, Grava, Pià, De Zerbi
Napoli second half: Iezzo, Rinaudo, Cannavaro, Contini, Maggio, Blasi, Gargano,
Hamsik, Vitale, Bogliacino, Denis

Rather than checking your email, Aaron, you should be able to just bookmark the
following:

http://groups.yahoo.com

assuming you are signed in you should see a column on your left-hand side
indicating all the groups for which you are subscribed. Then you'd just look for
the "xx new messages" text that will appear under the "cni-english" group. Hope
that helps.

FORZA NAPOLI!

Split opinions in Napoli test
Saturday 12 July, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Napoli were defeated 1-0 at Hajduk Split, but there were many positive signs for
Coach Edy Reja, including the impressive German Denis.
The Azzurri went into their first ‘real’ test match of the campaign and fell
to a Linic goal 31 minutes in.

Marek Hamsik should have equalised from the penalty spot, but failed to get it
on target.

Denis, who scored a hat-trick on his Napoli debut against Jennersdorf, was again
the star of the show in Split.

He earned the penalty that Hamsik missed and had a goal very harshly disallowed
for a push on Zivkovic.

The Argentine striker had several more good chances, while Inacio Pià wasted a
golden opportunity late on.

Summer signing Christian Maggio also did well down the right flank following his
move from Sampdoria.

It is a positive test for Napoli, who will begin their Intertoto Cup campaign on
July 19.

They’ll face the winners of the OFK Belgrade-Panionios second round match.

The news keeps coming out out Jennersdorf, Austria where Napoli are
conducting their pre-season training.

     * Midfielder Daniele Mannini will be out a few weeks as he suffered
an injury to his right quadricep when running into defender Fabiano
Santacroce. Note: Santacroce was also involved in another teammates
injury when he slid into newly-acquired attacker German Denis. The
Argentine striker's injury didn't slow him down as he bagged a hat trick
in Napoli's first friendly. Mannini won't be so lucky. It looks like he
may be out for at least a few weeks. Doctors are going to let the
swelling in his leg subside before determining next steps. However, at a
minimum it appears he'll be out through the end of the month and will
likely miss both legs of our Intertoto match. The options for coach Edy
Reja scare the hell out of me. Reja is talking about having either Mirko
Savini or Gianluca Grava cover the left-wing slot in Mannini's place.
Theer's been some talk of letting 21-year old Primavera product, and
native Napoletano, Luigi Vitale have some playing time but Reja said
he's battling his own injury concerns (I've looked but turned up noting
in the way of details on Vitale's injury).

     * If Matteo Contini is able to handle the left side of Reja's
three-man backline, and really he's done nothing to prove he can't, Reja
may decide to move Maurizio Domizzi into that LW spot. Direttore
Generale Pier Paolo Marino has been unable to find an acceptable deal
for Domizzi and unless something gets done in the next two days, Domizzi
is set to join the squad in Austria this Sunday. For some of the
defensive lapses Domizzi showed last year, I'll take him over Savini and
that big-ball-of-suck Grava. The fact that they shared time with the
captain's armband last year is all you need to know about their skills.
Apparently, Reja chooses his captain based on who can squander the most
scoring chances, who consistently gives up possession and who can
provide that 'locker room presence.' You tell me how else you explain
Roberto Sosa, Francesco Montervino, Savini and Grava getting the
majority of time with the captain armband? He's now settled on defender
Paolo Cannavaro as his captain and the bigger, slower, clumsier Canna
has kept up the tradition. Not good when your worst player on the
starting XI is sporting the armband. I must be missing something.

     * Goalkeeper Nicolas Navarro is back with the squad. Apparently the
Argentine Olympic team decided they didn't need a third keeper to set up
cones and fetch fresh water for Lionel Messi, Juan Roman Riquelme,
Nicolas (who can I sucker punch now?) Burdisso in Beijing. I feel bad
for Navarro but at least this forces Marino's hand and he now really has
to peddle away either Matteo Gianello or Genarro Iezzo. There was rumor
of Navarro drawing the short straw and getting sent out on loan, but I
don't buy it. Marino spent 4 million euro on the youngster this January
and he played tremendously the last three matches of the season. Look
for Gianello to be sold off here shortly.

     * The friendly scheduled against Argentine giants Boca Juniors in
early August is in jeopardy according to Le Nacion newspaper in
Argentina. It would really be a shame if the match doesn't take place as
I think it's the type the game that can grease the wheels for bringing
in additional South American players. Reports are the friendly would be
replaced either with a trip to Holland or Spain against Atletico Madrid.
I'd still rather play Boca Juniors at the San Paolo.

     * Tomorrow's friendly against Croatian powerhouse HNK Hajduk Spalato
will provide a clearer picture as to where we stand. The squad has won
17 championships (9 when they were part of Yugoslavia) and has had some
storied players including Slaven Bilic. HNK Hajduk played Fiorentina in
last years Intertoto Cup and lost 2-1 on aggregate. They'll be playing
Malta side Birkirkara in a two legged UEFA Cup tie on July 17 & 31.

Denis' golden Napoli debut
 Napoli-Jennersdorf 10-0

New striker German Denis has made a stunning debut with Napoli, scoring a
hat-trick in their friendly win over Jennersdorf.
The Argentine was drafted in from Indipendiente to partner Ezequiel Lavezzi this
season and has already won over the supporters.
Denis bagged a hat-trick in the opening half-hour of their 10-0 victory over the
local Austrian team, the first friendly match of the 2008-09 campaign.
He also impressed with his work-rate and willingness to come back and help out
the midfield.
“Aside from the goals, I liked the way Denis played,” noted Coach Edy Reja
(pictured). “He fights for every ball and has great momentum.”
Inacio Pia also scored a hat-trick, while Roberto De Zerbi, Michele Pazienza,
Walter Gargano and Sam Dalla Bona rounded out the result.
The Jennersdorf match also represented the Napoli debut of Christian Maggio and
Leandro Rinaudo.
“Maggio really propped up the flank and Rinaudo gave a great sense of calm to
the whole defence, despite the fact he has only just arrived.”

Napoli's Intertoto date looms

Napoli are closer to finding out who they will face in their Intertoto Cup third
round clash.
The Vesuviani are hoping to enter the UEFA Cup by the backdoor after finishing
eighth last term.
Edy Reja’s side will only have to win one two-legged encounter to secure a
place in Europe due to the way the competition is seeded.
Napoli will take on the winners of the second round game between Serbian side
OFK Belgrade and Greeks Panionios.
OFK have the upper hand after winning the first leg 1-0 and the Partenopei’s
involvement will begin with an away day on July 19 or 20 and a Stadio San Paolo
date on July 26 or 27.
The Azzurri were the first side to begin pre-season training and are working in
Austria ahead of their early start to the campaign.

Napoli are the first side to begin pre-season training and Coach Edy Reja was in
a positive mood as work began in Austria yesterday.
The Vesuviani celebrated their return to the top flight last term with an
impressive eighth-placed finish.
Having missed out on UEFA Cup qualification by one place, the Partenopei are
hoping to secure European football via the back door and have entered the
Intertoto Cup.
“It’s natural that we are the first team to get started because we have an
important Intertoto engagement soon,” Reja said.
“We will have to see whether we pay for entering this tournament once the
Serie A campaign gets underway.
“But the players and I have great motivation. In three years we have gone from
Serie C to chasing a place in Europe and we are ahead of our schedule.
“Napoli are getting better each year. This side has already shown itself to be
in a state of constant growth.
“I’m happy with the arrivals of Christian Maggio, German Denis and Leandro
Rinaudo and sporting director Pierpaolo Marino is looking to bring in a left
winger and a second striker.
“Clearly it is always tough to strengthen a strong side, but the club has
always shown faith in me and the results have followed.
“I don’t ever make promises. However, the club has big ambitions and Napoli
have the potential to reach the Champions League, but I don’t know when that
will be and whether I will be in charge.”

Ready for the Summer Camp.
July 3rd Napoli goes to Jennersodorf (Austria) without Navarro and Lavezzi

Last days of vacation for Napoli's players, who on Thursday July 3rd, will
regroup to go for the training camp to Jennersodorf, austrian village in the
Burgenland region. It is here that Napoli will prepare for the 2008-09 serie A
season, it is here that Napoli will try to get themselves in decent condition in
order to confront straight away the latest edition of the Intertoto Cup and to
hope to be able to enter the UEFA Cup.
Not taking part from the azzurri contingent are Ezequiel Lavezzi and Nicholas
Navarro as both have been summoned by the Argentinian Olympic Team that will
participate in the next Olympic Games in Beijing from the 8th to the 24th of
August. The two azzurri will begin preparation with their national side July
7th, and this way will still have couple of days rest at their disposition.

Napoli will have many engagements to confront in this start of preparation. Just
to begin with, there are three friendlies scheduled July 9th, 13th and 16th.
First away game of the Intertoto slated for July 20th, then the return at San
Paolo July 27th. August 2nd there is an easy friendly with Boca, then on the
14th we hope for the possible away match of the UEFA second preliminary, the
21st sees the Moretti Trophy with Juve and Inter; and the 28th the possible
return match of the UEFA preliminary before the start of the serie A campaign
scheduled on August 31st.
The Market: Marino's Strategy

The general manager of the Azzurri wants another quality player in the event of
making the UEFA.
The market for Napoli very much depends on participation in the next UEFA Cup,
and on the future of Vincenzo Iaquinta. Aside from qualification for the
continental tournament, the azzurri need an attacker who will willingly take the
bench behind Lavezzi, they need a midfielder as well as an outside left. If
Napoli makes the tournament, the gm wants to pick up an attacker of note
considering the participation of Lavezzi in the Olympics which could effect his
seasonal performance. All of Napoli's fans will remember what happened to
Gargano, who, between December and January of last season, showed the effects of
fatigue from the Copa America. That's why the gm would not want to invest
millions of euros for the aquisition of the strong Emanuelson and holds hot the
track to Cigarini without yet closing the deal. There is money to spend, but
not enough for picking up Cigarini, Iaquinta and Emanuelson. Thus, the gm is
compelled to devote himself to the club's
priorities that are inevitably linked to participation in the UEFA Cup. In that
sense, Marino wants to wait with certainty for the participation of Napoli in
the Cup before going for Iaquinta who Juventus will have to give up for
receiving the necessary euros to cover other positions.

Calaiòcompletes Siena move Tuesday 1 July, 2008

________________________________

Siena have signed Napoli striker Emanuele Calaiò, who blamed Coach Edy Reja for
his poor form.

The forward has barely featured in the top flight for the team he helped to
promotion in 2007 and is looking for a new challenge.

“I am going to Siena in a co-ownership agreement. It is not a goodbye to
Napoli, but rather a see you soon,” said the 26-year-old.

“I am disappointed to be leaving the fans, but I want to prove how much I am
worth in Serie A.

“In football the fate of a player is tied in with the Coach and there was
never a great rapport with Reja, although there was mutual respect and I always
did well under him in the first two years.

“I did not have the faith I perhaps deserved, especially as the Coach always
decided to play anyone except me.”

Calaiò made only seven starts in Serie A last term and has been at Napoli since
January 2005, helping them to promotion from Serie C1 up to the top flight.

“I want to challenge myself again and will go to a club fighting for survival,
but Siena will get the best out of me and I know Coach Marco Giampaolo very
well.

“I thank the Napoli fans for supporting me even in the most difficult moments.
I rejected many top flight offers because I believed in this project. I'm proud
to have worn the Napoli shirt and hope to do so again.”

Napoli chief in Iaquinta jibe
Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has laughed off any swap deal with
Juventus involving Marek Hamsik and Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Juve have been coveting Slovak sensation Hamsik since he started mesmerising
Serie A audiences at the start of last season.

Meanwhile, Napoli have been searching for a reliable goal-getter and Iaquinta
has voiced his frustration at sitting on the Bianconeri bench.

However, Partenopei supremo De Laurentiis has no intention of letting Hamsik go
and believes he has found his marksman in Argentine new boy German Denis.

“What do I think of trading Hamsik for Iaquinta? I don’t think we would do
it because Hamsik is worth 10 times Iaquinta’s value,” De Laurentiis
claimed.

“We will see whether the arrival of Denis has finalised the attack because we
still need to see how Marcelo Zalayeta’s recovery is going.

“And then there is Ezequiel Lavezzi whose Olympic commitments could take him
away from us for a few games.

“We need to trim out squad back a little, but first we will see which players
we require.”

I thought this article was good for a laugh :

*Iaquinta key to Hamsik*Sunday 29 June, 2008
Juventus chiefs confirm they intend to secure “a goalkeeper and midfielder”
before Friday as Vincenzo Iaquinta is offered in exchange for Marek Hamsik.

“We are looking for a quality midfielder and a goalkeeper. We don’t want to
take the fans for a ride and will keep our feet on the ground, so those are the
only arrivals,” general manager Jean Claude Blanc told Tuttosport.

“Our objective is to have the squad completed before the start of pre-season
training on July 4. This is the approach we took last year and it proved smart,
as it is important to ensure the group gels quickly.

“The next seven or eight days will be very important to finish off the final
negotiations. Naturally if some talks required a little extra, I wouldn’t cut
them short just because the training camp is opening.”

The prime candidate to act as reserve for Gianluigi Buffon is Monaco goalkeeper
Flavio Roma, who has already said he is open to the idea.

One of the potential transfers is Dejan Stankovic from Inter, but the Juve fans
have staged a bitter campaign of protest to dissuade the club from completing
this move.

“It is only right that the fans express their opinion, but the club must make
its decisions on a professional basis taking into account technical
requirements, costs and other situations,” noted Blanc.

Nonetheless, the protests have been heard and the Bianconeri are looking towards
alternative objectives. Names include Roma youngster Alberto Aquilani and Napoli
starlet Hamsik.

*The Bianconeri’s interest in Slovakian midfielder Hamsik is nothing new, but
up until now Napoli have been unwilling to part with him.
*
*The key to changing their tune is the introduction of World Cup winning striker
Iaquinta as part of the deal.
*
*Juve are reportedly ready to release Iaquinta in exchange for 50 per cent of
Hamsik’s contract, to be completed in 2009 after spending another season at
Napoli, or £11m cash.
*
Claudio Ranieri is not short on midfield options anyway, as youth products
Sebastian Giovinco, Claudio Marchisio and Paolo De Ceglie have returned from
their loan spells.

“We believe a great deal in our young players and those three will join a
squad made of legendary champions,” added President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli.

“We must work on what we have already built in the past two seasons. The
results proved the basis for a solid side is there.”

I respect what Terim has achieved at the Euro, but Serie A is another world
and Reja has earned another year based on what was achieved last season. I
doubt there is any substance to the rumour anyhow.

Very happy with MAGGIO signing.....DENIS should be good too....I have faith

After their 3-2 defeat last night to Germany in the semifinals of EURO 2008

pursueother managerial positions. Terim has always expressed his interest to
return to Serie A, were he had previously managed Fiorentina and had a breif
stint with AC Milan.
According to the Turkish media,Napoli seems to be thelikely destination for
the Turkish mastermind. However, Genoa, Palermo and a second chance at
Fiorentina have also been speculated. Terim has reportedly also received offers
from several German and English clubs including Stuttgart, Schalke, Hertha
Berlin, West Ham and Blackburn.

Obinna in Napoli appeal Thursday 26 June, 2008

________________________________

Victor Obinna is ready to quit Chievo despite their promotion to Serie A and is
hoping for a move to Napoli.

The Nigerian marksman has been on the radar of several top-flight sides and is
seen by many experts as a hugely exciting prospect for the future.

While Catania were early favourites to lure Obinna, he has revealed his soft
spot for the Partenopei.

“I would really like to play for Napoli,” the 20-year-old told Radio Kiss
Kiss Naples.

“I am very happy with the achievement that we reached at Chievo.

“It was a deserved promotion, even if it was difficult because of the ruthless
competition. As the games went by we believed more and more in our abilities.

“But I know that there are lots of teams chasing me and my agent is weighing
up every offer that presents itself.

“I can confirm that Roma and Napoli are very interested and they were both
chasing me last year.

“Personally, I would love to play for Napoli because the Stadio San Paolo has
a spectacular atmosphere and so many champions have worn the Partenopei shirt,
such as Diego Maradona.

“I have also had offers from Spanish, English and German teams. We will see
who presents the best proposal economically speaking within the next few
days.”

At this moment it seems that NAPOLI is trying to get Obinna (Chievo) , Cigarini
(Parma)
and Rodrigo Palacio (Boca).
Denis, we're in love with you Tuesday 24 June, 2008
Napoli have expanded their Argentine colony by bringing in striker German Denis,
recommended by Ezequiel Lavezzi.

“We will be in Naples next Monday to put pen to paper and present the player
to the media,” confirmed Independiente general secretary Emilio Mattera.

“Last week the player underwent a medical with the staff from both clubs
present.”

Denis has signed a contract with Napoli until June 2013 and is the third major
signing along with Sampdoria’s Christian Maggio and Palermo defender Leandro
Rinaudo.

The 26-year-old will be a strike partner for Lavezzi (pictured) and was
personally recommended to the club by ‘El Pocho.’

Denis was top scorer in the 2007 Argentine Apertura tournament for Independiente
and has two national caps to his name.

Welcome to Maggio and Denis
Benvenuti a Cristian Maggio. Napoli will pay an €8m transfer fee and a pay the
ex Sampdoria defender €800,000 per season in a deal spanning five years.
Maggio had a superb 2007/08 season for Samp, and was one of the best right full
backs in Serie A. Maggio is coming off of a killer Serie A season where his
trademark runs down the flank were a key factor in Samp’s qualification for
the UEFA Cup and as a defender he tallied nine goals in 29 games. The season was
so good that there was some outrage when Donadoni stiffed him for the Euro
torunament. The Partenopei beat out Aston Villa and AC Milan for Maggio’s
services.
His background, taken from the CBC website reads as folows:
Maggio is an attacking right hand sided full back or wing back. Italian born and
capped at u21 level. He began his carrer in 2000 at Vicenza and played there
until 2003 when he was transferred to Fiorentina. Still only 24, Maggio didn’t
really find a way to become a regular at Fiorentina and made 52 appearances in
the 2and a half seasons he spent in Florence. The transfer window in 2005 was a
chance to reestablish himself as a first team player and Maggio moved on loan to
Sampdoria. Still to fulfill his youth international promise Maggio is a much
talked about player who has the ability to become even better.

As reported here a week ago, from what I am reading, it is just waiting the
official stamp but the Tank, German Denis will pair with Ezequiel Lavezzi this
coming season as the main strikers in our lineup. The Argentine hitman,
nicknamed ‘The Tank’ has been in prolific form since joining Independiente
from Colon in 2006, scoring 44 goals in just 65 games. The 26-year-old, who is
renowned for his power, has won two caps for Argentina. Napoli will pay around
€11m for Denis.
Lastly, it appears that Maurizio Domizzi will soon sign with Lazio. I wish him
well. He was a good player for us and I respected his passion, grit and hustle
over the last two years. He was stalwart for us and I know he will serve the
Laziali very well.
That’s it for now. Thumbs up to Marino, particularly for the Maggio
signing!!!!
