Mantova-Napoli 1-0
Napoli pays dearly the carelessness of Gatti and
Maldonado with a loss against a Mantova team that just focused on defense
Two careless errors are enough at this point of
the championship to cause Napoli to lose both the
game and its second place standing. First Gatti
and then Maldonado open the way for a Mantova
team that was really just focused on defending
itself. To this one must add the injuries to
Domizzi and Bogliacino that occurred at the
crucial points of the game and have further
compromised the match for Reja and the team,
right now, can only hope to reach the second place by beating Genoa on June 10.
Gatti, Calaio`, Grava and Savini come back to the
Napoli team relying on its 3-5-2 layout. Napoli
is on the offensive right out of the gate but a
tight Mantova gives little room to the
guests. The azzurri continuously seek the head
of Sosa who just cannot find the right pass. The
game is intense but for any real opportunities
one must wait until the 21st minute of the first
half to witness a truly dangerous play by
Sosa. The Argentinian player takes advantage of
a ball recovered by Montervino and Dalla Bona in
the box. At the 32nd minute Mantova replies with
Tarana who in speed overtakes Grava but lines a
drive just to the left of the net. At the 37th
minute Domizzi comes out due to an injury and a
minute later it is Bogliacino's turn after a
close encounter with Mezzanotti and this forces
Reja to put in Della Bona and to lose two
substitutions. At the end of the first half
Gatti wastes time and is forced to foul
Grauso. On the following placed kick his
ingenuity allows the ball to reach Caridi who
dribbles Maldonado and kicks hard for a goal,
aided in part by a deflection by Cannavaro.
At the beginning of the second half Napoli
appears visibly shaken and nervous for the goal
just taken and at the 49th minute Maldonado
causes the referee to expel him for an elbow
taken to Godeas thus leaving the team with 10
players and despite the best efforts by Napoli,
Mantova manages to lock itself down and playing
through long passes forward. At the 58th minute
there is a foul worthy of a penalty kick by Rullo
on Sommese but Messina does not call it and at
the 68th minute it is Iezzo, with a two-time, to
save the score and to incredibly avoid a goal by
Franchini who was launched all alone by Caridi.
Reja's team at this point is clearly conceding
much space to the opposing team while it
desperately seeks a tie and at the 72nd minute
there is a wonderful recovery by Cannavaro on
Godeas who was launched towards the goal. At the
82nd minute Calaio` has an opportunity following
a placed kick on the right, but the header from
an excellent position by the Palermo native is
weak and imprecise. At the 90th once again the
goaltender for Napoli avoids a worse defeat by
flying towards the ball headed for the upper
corner of the net by Caridi while two minutes
later, first a post and then the cross bar save
Napoli by Rizzi and Spinale, respectively.

Napoli 1 - Albinoleffe 0
Sosa's fith goal gives Napoli it's fifth victory
in a row which keeps it in second place but just
a solitary point ahead of Genoa. With six games
left to play the battle for second spot and
automatic promotion is on in earnest.
Third place will require a playoff to get into
Serie A which both Napoli and Genoa desperately
want to avoid. Fourth place on the other hand is
some ten points adrift of third placed Genoa, so
we have a genuine two-horse race for second spot
with the club for which our ultras and theirs
have a long standing "gemellaggio" or friendship.
One wonders how long that will last now !
Napoli put in what has now become a typical
performance winning one nil from a first half
strike by Sosa. After taking the lead Napoli shut
up shop and were content to let Albinoleffe come
at them. Until the goal Napoli were quite a
different side. In the early part of the match
Garics threatened the keeper with a shot and
several runs into the Albinoleffe area. In the
33rd minute a cross from Domizzi found the head
of Sosa who angled his header past the keeper
Marchetti to score what would be the winner.
The second half was all about Napoli giving away
very little, while Albinoleffe tried in vain to
crawl back into the match. Albinoleffe did score
through Ferrari but only to have the goal
rightfully disallowed for offside. Napoli made
the fans suffer to the last as they have down all
year. For better of worse it is this kind of
cynical football that has taken them from
promotion out of Serie C all the way to the verge
of direct promotion to Serie A.

Naples 1 – Cesena 0
After the recent successful away games, Naples
returned to their home territory to gain a hard fought
victory over Cesena. As stated by the Director
General of Naples [Marino] immediately after the game,
this is not the time to comment on the quality of the
play, more important is the fact that three point were
obtained. Points that were even more precious because
of the victory gained by Genoa the other evening
[Genoa 2-Treviso 1] and no matter how the points were
obtained, they put Naples into second place in the
league. The goal came from Sosa in the 7th minute, in
a game that was played without much fantasy but
managed to be played at a level sufficient to keep
control. Even the spectators, contrary to the last
game played against Pescara, managed to understand
that the "means justified the ends" as they applauded
their team.
Those that expected a Naples team charging at the
opposition would have been disappointed. Rumours at
the beginning of the week that Naples would be using a
three pronged attack, did not come true. De Zerbo sat
in the stands and on the bench we had Bucchi and Pià.
On the pitch, Sosa and Calaiò, as expected, occupied
the two central positions. The game had two star
centre-forwards facing off to each other, Calaiò with
12 goals and Papa Waigo with 14. Cesena started the
game with Salvetti supporting Papa Waigo, with the
Senegalese international testing the Naples defence.
In the first meeting this season, the score was 1-1,
with both goals coming from Calaiò and Papa Waigo. In
the 7th minute Sosa punished Cesena in his own special
way, a beautiful header beating Sarti who had moved
out of position and left his goal unprotected. Cesena
protested, but the error by the right back was all too
evident for everybody to see. The game now took a
predictable route, with the goal giving them the
advantage, Naples did attack but without any real
threat. Cesena took 35 minutes to bring Iezzo into
action but Papa Waigo wasted a golden opportunity to
score with his head when only a few yards out he
headed wide. A few minutes later the Senegalese
stricker robbed the ball off Cannavaro and made for
the goal area. Just in time Domizzi intercepted to
save the day with a fortuous sliding tackle.
At the start of the second half, Calaiò worked hard to
get a goal, but first Lauro got in the way when the
ball hit his arm [the referee refused to give a
penalty] and then Sarti. Finally Calaiò was
unfortunate to miss with a header by a whisker. There
was nothing that Naples could do to score again.
Calaiò did try with a long distance shot that came to
nothing. Cesena tried to get into the game, but for
Papa Waigo this was not one of his better days, at one
point he did timidly protest, claiming that he was
held in the penalty area and could not get his header
on target. Cesena, as promised by their Manager
before the game, did try until the last minute, but
without once finding a true advantage. Cannavaro did
manage to deflect a good shot from Pellè on the right
side of the area, whilst Iezzo managed to hold a shot
from Bracaletti. These were the last dangerous
moments for the Sky Blues, who had managed with true
grit to scrape a victory. It was heavy going and as
Marino said, 3 points are 3 points.

Frosinone-Napoli 1-2
A fortunate Napoli managed a third consecutive
victory that’s put them in second place in the league table.
Napoli risked compromising the meet due to late
changes made by the coach. The azzurro manager
waited until Frosinone had the advantage until he
played Pià and Trotta who, in fact, put the match
to bed in favour of the azzurri.
Midweek Reja had stated he would go with an
anti-Frosinone formation returning to a 3-5-2
with Amodio in place of Gatti, Montervino instead
of Dalla Bona and Sosa with Calaiò leading the
line. Napoli would be relying on long balls for
Sosa to get past the home team’s physically strong midfield. In the secon
In the 2nd minute, a cross from Amodio found
onside Calaiò who burst forward and scored, but
the linesman signalled a non-existent offside.
After the Azzuri’s disallowed goal, the home team
attacked Napoli who absorbed the impact and in
the 19th min, just missed taking the lead through
Paolo Cannavaro who was in a great position
After a few minutes of gialloblu pressure the
azzurri could have upped the tempo and pressure
but Reja’s boys were trying to force a Frosinone
error which let play slip back to a more bland rhythm.
In the beginning of the second half we were
expecting Reja to have made changes but he
fielded the same starting 11 with Pià e Trotta still on the sidelines.
The azzurro tactic could not find any holes in
the home defence always well positioned and aware
not to leave the argentine Sosa whose bursts always looked dangerous.
In the 54th minute, following a corner, Calaiò
met the ball with a header and grazed the post to
the left of Zappino. Iaconi’s team seemed to be
quite happy with a draw but Napoli were not and
upped their game tremendously in search of the three points.
In the 62nd minute Cannavaro pushed forward on
the edge of the opponent’s area and dared to
dribble, a lucky clearance led to a brilliant
Iezzo saving Margiotta’s header.
A minute later due to, again, a wide open
defence, Castillo – who had just come on the
pitch, headed the ball past Iezzo at close range.
The 'laziali' advantage finally wavered when Reja
put Pia on right away for a visibly breathless
Amodio. It didn't take much for the Brazilian to
disprove the coach's initial choices and in the
66,he stole away up the left wing beatin two
opponents and giftwrapping a goal for Sosa, he
couldn't do anything else but level the score,
At 1 - 1 the match fired up the match and the
home team tried to immediately go ahead in the
69' with Dedic, who’d just come on, Perra had
set him up nicely but the volley ended up hitting
the outside post to the right of Iezzo.
At this point Reja played the Trotta card. Trotta
created a chance in the 83' and ended the match
with a high. He scored the winning goal in the
88' with a spectacular volley from 20 yards out
thanks to Sosa’s presence in the area.

Treviso-Napoli 0-3
Napoli wins easily in Treviso (0-3). Reja 's team
got the points with goals from Pia`, Calaio` and
Montervino leaving them only two points from
second placed Genoa. Iezzo was instrumental saving a penalty from Beghetto.
An extraordinary first half goal by Pia` got
Napoli on it's way to the win in Treviso, sealing
the result through second half goals by Calaio`
and Montervino. With this win Reja's side are two
points behind Genoa consolidating third place
which will be important in the event of a playoff.
In the first half Reja's team were sent out with
the trident of De Zerbi - Calaio` and Pia`.
Napoli went ahead after 3 minutes of play with
the brazilian Pia` who ran down the left, cut
into the centre and with a powerful right footed
shot put the ball in the top left corner past Avramov.
In the second half Treviso re-entered the field
determined to find the equaliser but at the
height of their assault it was Napoli who scored
against the run of play, with a header by Calaio`
off a precise cross from the left by Savini. The
Trevigiani could have got back into the match in
the 22nd minute when Domizzi brought down
Beghetto in the box leading to a penalty which
was then saved by Iezzo stretching to his left
and turning the ball around the post for a
corner. In the final minutes Montervino also
scored which wrapped up the 3 points, from the
edge of the box his shot deflected off a defender and looped over Avramov.

Napoli-Pescara 1-0
Enough a cue from Calaìo and the goal by the
dependable Bogliacino to beat a modest Pescara,
but the azzurri's second half is absolutely
forgettable and the fans whistle their displeasure.
Reja's team played poorly in the second half
giving too much field to a modest Pescara who
threatened to tie the score a few minutes before
the end of the match with a chance by Luci.
Edy Reja's partial switch resting only Dalla Bona
who's been out of breath for several weeks,
lining up in his place Amòdio and confirming a
good Cannavaro at the center of the defense with
Moldonado diverted to the right center of the "a tre" azzurri defense.
The tactical theme is clear from the very start
with Napoli in the hunt for the lead, especially
from the head of Sosa, and Pescara ready to
strike back. In spite of the impenetrable 4-5-1
and the azzurri's maneouvres, the guests
displayed all their technical limitations leaving
lots of field for the azzurri midfield to raid.
At the 13th minute Napoli takes the lead thanks
to a cue from Calàio who from the right breaks
free from De Martis, delivers a good left strike,
but on the rebound saved by Polito, Bogliacino
lies in ambush and delivers. After the lead is
taken, Reja's team persists especially on the
left side where Savini seems to be more in the
mood than usual even though his crosses are not
clearly his best, being a pure defender.
At the 28th minute, Pescara's first chance with a
shot from 30 metres by Moscardi that finds Iezzo
prepared. 10 minutes later, a beautiful opening
by Bogliacino on the right for the rushing Trotta
whose right shot adds to the list of wood struck
by Napoli so far as this season. Just before
Mister Banti sends the teams to their dressing
rooms, there is time for a new opportunity for
Napoli with a header by Maldonado that finishes
just outside on the 1-2 with Trotta.
Brutal second half for the azzurri who,
independently from the substitutions in the
attacking zone, forced by turn-overs, give up
playing leaving the field to Pescara and risking
the match. The newly entered Pià comes close to
doubling the lead at the 51st minute with a
header that is stopped on the line by Polito,
then at the 63rd minute, out-jumping his opponent
but sending the ball just past the post out of bounds.
After these opportunities, Reja's team slows down
and Pescara believe in themselves trying first
with Martini from long and then with Rigoni at
the 74th minute. Pescara comes dangerously close
to tying the match at the 84th minute with Luci
who brushes the post on a shot close to the
ground from 16 metres. At the end Napoli can put
away the game on the counterattack, but Pià and
Bucchi - slow as usual even though he played less
than a half - cannot take advantage of the opportunity.

Juventus - Napoli 2-0
A decent Napoli only in the very beginning, then
Juventus seek and find a win that was never up for grabs
The fact that Juventus were stronger and that
this was not the litmus test for the team was a
known fact, but a Napoli perhaps more convinced
of its own strengths in the second half could
have perhaps managed to pull a draw at the very
end. The various "what ifs" come and go and the
black-and-white champions play a wonderful first
half and then just control the situation in the
second half given no chance to Napoli.
Napoli was actually aggressive from the very
beginning, a sign that Reja wants to go all out
against the team in first place, which is perhaps
playing its best game of the tournament. Gatti,
in a forward position creates more than a few
problems for Deschamps' team who after ten
minutes decides to put Giannichedda at his side
blocking his incursions. At the 5th minute Sosa
tries with a reverse kick just a bit too high and
a minute later it is again the Argentinian player
who steals the ball from Zebina just outside the
box, but his left-footed kick winds up too
wide. At the 14th minute the hosts have their
first try with Chiellini who just misses the post
with a header following a placed kick at the edge
of the box. Juventus begins then to move the
game forward along the field after the initial
assault by Napoli; the plays by Zebina and
especially Balzaretti keep Savini back and Grava
is particularly limited by the former player of
Torino and by Nedved. The 3-5-2 scheme by Reja
suffers against the 4-4-2 by Juventus causing the
two Neapolitan forwards to find themselves often
outnumbered. At the 18th minute Juventus scores
thanks to a creative play by Nedved who dribbles
Grava and passes the ball straight for the
upcoming Camoranesi's head who beats
Iezzo. Juventus goes in forcing after its goal
and even finds the support of its fans, following
the boos with the game against Albinoleffe. At
the 20th minute Napoli comes alive around Buffon
with a good opportunity for Dalla Bona who wastes
the pass from Grava from a good position. At the
27th Iezzo makes a great save on a close play by
Del Piero and three minutes later, it is Nedved
who misses the goal with a header that goes too high.
Juventus now slows down the rythm towards the end
of the first half and at the 40th minute Grava
tries to use Sosa to serve Bogliacino who from 20
meters tries to hit the mark. Just before the
break there is time for an excellent play by
Maldonado on Trezeguet a few steps from Iezzo and
a wonderful rebound by the Neapolitan goalie on
the Czech player only 20 meters away.
In the second hald Napoli is even more of a
chance taker just like in the first minutes of
the match, but at the 50th minute Juventus takes
advantage of the position of the Neapolitan
players who are unbalanced and finds its second
goal with Del Piero who is launched all by
himself by Camoranesi. Napoli now loses a lot of
its luster and at the 61st minute Domizzi saves
the net by rebounding a kick by Trezeguet on the
line. At the 62nd minute Marchisio is expelled
by the referee Mr. Airoldi and this could re-open
the game with a bit of determination by the guest
team. At the 64th Savini finds Trotta on the
right but his running kick is blocked by
Buffon. Napoli marches ahead thanks to Juventus'
inferiority in the number of players and backs up
too much. At the 83rd Domizzi hits the cross bar
after a kick from a long distance and three
minutes later, Napoli again hits the post with
Sosa who, alone in front of Buffon. Napoli loses
confidence also because of its bad luck and at
the end the score could have been even harsher
with Palladino who manages, however, to miss the goal from a few feet away.

Juventus - Napoli
Napoli travel north to the historic Stadio
Olimpico di Torino to take on 27-time scudetto
winners Juventus. Juve is playing at the Stadio
Olimpico while the Stadio delle Alpi undergoes
renovations. The stadium was constructed during
Benito Mussolini's reign and was used for the
closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics.
The game was rescheduled from March 25th due to national team obligations.
These two squads have had historic matches in
their past. Their two matches this year have been
exquisite games including an extra-time PK special in the Coppa Italia.
Despite the losses of Fabio Cannavaro (Real
Madrid), Patrick Viera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic
(Inter) and Gianluca Zambrotta and Lilian Thuram
(Barcelona) La Vecchia Signora and a points
deduction (reduced twice), they have only lost 2
matches all year and have been plotting what
they'll do when they get to Serie A since the
beginning of the campaign. Despite a few recent
speedbumps (loss to Brescia and draws against
Albinoleffe and Arezzo) they've dominated Serie
B. Juve have a ridiculous +38 goal differential
which more than any other stat displays their
dominance (Rimini is next with +16).
Juve is led by their captain and living legend,
Alessandro Del Piero. Serie B's capocannonieri
has hit the back of the net 18 times thus far (1
PK) and scored over 200 goals in his Juve career.
Despite resting during their draw against
Albinoleffe, Pinturicchio is expected to play
against Napoli. Juve have a very balanced attack
with French International David Trezeguet with 9
goals and wannabe Kurt Cobain look-a-like, Pavel Nedved
and 22-year old Raffaele Palladino both netting 8 goals apiece.
Put another way, Palladino is tied for 3rd on his
team in goals yet his 8 goals would make him the
leading goal scorer for 9 Serie B teams
(Albinoleffe, Lecce, Triestina, Bari, Verona,
Modena, Crotone, Pescara and Arezzo).
Simply put, Juventus is the overwhelming favorite
every time they hit the pitch this year. They are
undefeated at home (13 wins, 2 draws) are loaded
with international players and have arguably the
worlds best keeper in Gigi Buffon between the pipes.
Stats:
Juve home goals 39 (8 surrendered)
Napoli road goals 22 (11 surrendered)
Juve 1st half goals 25 (7 surrendered)
Napoli 1st half goals 15 (8 surrendered)
Juve 2nd half goals 32 goals (12 surrendered)
Napoli 2nd half goals 19 goals (13 surrendered)
Last 5 matches:
Napoli (D-D-L-D-W) 6 goals made and 6 allowed
Juve (L-W-W-W-D) 9 goals made and 5 allowed
The game is sold out. I could write about these
two teams forever. Game will be televised on RAI International. Forza Napoli!
----------
The rivalry continues. I pray to the gods that
Napoli has to earn at least one point or else
i'll never hear the end of it from my friends and
Juve fan boys. Napoli needs to pressure Napoli
and go for goal. We can't sit back and play
counter attack, i think we'll be doomed if we do so.
Highlights from the last game. I would say we did
well. ********ing nice goal by Bogliacino :

Palladino and Bojinov not starting ... They are both extreamly dangerous.
This game will be so much different than the
first game. Trez wasn't a factor and we didn't
have P.Cannavaro with us. We played very rough and there were alot of cards.
I wonder if De Zerbi was available if he would
get the start over Sosa. Also I would like to see
Sosa subed out first. In the Bologna game Calaio
came off first which to me didn't make sense
considering he's 25 and Sosa is 6years older and looked tired.
I have faith in our team.
Bologna 2-3 Napoli
This was a promotion showdown between two of the
four teams that were tied in third place going
into this Easter weekend round and certainly
lived up to expectations. Bologna had ex-Napoli
boss Renzo Ulivieri at the helm, but striker
Bellucci wasn’t even fit enough for the bench. It
was a blistering start, as within three minutes
Maldonado’s error had sent Marazzina clear,
goalkeeper Iezzo denying him with a fine save.
Napoli survived the scare and opened the scoring
when Sosa held up a free kick for Domizzi’s
volley. Feel for poor Terzi, whose goalline
clearance only ricocheted into the net off ‘keeper Antonioli’s back!
The Rossoblu could’ve equalised if Meghni had
made the most of a poor Iezzo clearance, but
instead Maldonado’s towering header from
Bogliacino’s corner doubled the away side’s
advantage. Bologna continued to shoot themselves
in the foot, with Fantini incredibly firing over
an open goal after a lucky deflection. Once
again, they paid the price, as four minutes later
Calaiò nodded in Trotta’s cross at the near post.
Ulivieri must’ve shaken the locker room walls
with his half-time speech, as his team came out
more determined. Meghni’s effort was turned out
for a corner and Marazzina wasted a great chance
before their first goal. Meghni dispossessed
Dalla Bona and spread the play for Fantini to set
up Marazzina’s tap-in. The ex-Chievo
centre-forward was leading the line and he fired
in Smit’s cross to make it 3-2 at the Stadio
Dall’Ara. Marazzina almost completed his
hat-trick on 81 minutes, as his diving header
smashed against the upright with Iezzo beaten.
The under-fire Napoli goalkeeper turned Meghni’s free kick round the post

Napoli conquer Bologna, with goals by Domizzi,
Maldonado, and Calaiò. Marazzina the sole scorer for Bologna.
So far this season, the Napoli coach has based
his team's play on long passes and crosses from outside the edge of the box.
However, on this day, the Napoli coach finally
decides to start, from the first minute, the
player best capable of exploiting this style of play:
"El Pampa" Sosa.
Sosa was decisive in busting the match wide open,
just as Bologna were looking very dangerous, and
which led to a great Napoli first half.
Great game at the Dall'Ara stadium, which seemed
to be all but over after just the first 45' - but
a tough and gritty Bologna squad made it close in
the second half, with some "thanks" also due to
lackluster play by the "partenopei."
Ulivieri was not able to field Bellucci and
Castellini, so his team was prepped to attack,
and attack they did! At just 3' the "felsinei"
come close to taking the lead with Marazzina,
whom, however, does not take advantage of
Maldonado's faux-pas and thus fails to open the score sheet.
A minute later Fillippini ably sends a nice ball
through to Marazzina but Cannavaro closes in, and shuts him down.
Bologna keep pressing until the 9' but then the
tables turn. On a Napoli free kick from the edge
of the box, Bogliacino finds Sosa who heads the
ball to Domizzi who steers it towards the Bologna
net. Antonioli almost makes the miracle save, as
Terzi vainly tries to clear the ball from
crossing the goal line. He's too late however and Napoli are ahead 1-0.
Napoli now take the reins of the game in hand,
and are virtually masters on the pitch,
unchallenged in midfield, with Gatti leading the
charge as the star of a great first half.
Napoli score again at the 25', the goal fruit of
a corner kick; Maldonado storms onto the flying
sphere, and it's 2-0 to the azzurri.
The home side are somewhat shocked and
demoralized, so much that on 34' Frantini misses
what is essentially a "freebie", with the Napoli
keeper and the defense nowhere to be found, as
his shot sails high of Iezzo's goal. On 38',
Napoli strike yet again; Trotta crosses to
Calaiò, whose sure header finds the back of the
net for the third Napoli goal. As the half winds
down, Iezzo miraculously saves a Fantini shot on
40' . The ref blows his whistle,
and the teams amble into the locker rooms, with Napoli leading by three goals.
As the match resumes, Bologna is clearly
determined to score, and goes forward at all
costs. Napoli is sitting back, with a comfortable
lead, and seem content to contain the Bolognesi,
stringing passes along, here and there, but with
no focus. So it's no surprise that on 57', a
naive mistake in midfield, leads to Bologna's
first goal: Meghni steals the ball from Dalla
Bona, passes to Fantini on the left who sends a
low cross to the omnipresent Marazzina - this
time Marazzina does not miss. Bologna have their first goal.
The game now is highly charged, as Ulivieri urges
his men on. On 61', another Napoli defensive
mistake leads to Meghni again posing a threat,
but ultimately leads to nothing. Reja replaces
the spent Gatti with Amodio, but the game is
blown wide-open when Bologna score again on
72'. The goal is almost a carbon copy of the
first Bologna goal, except that Meghni steals the
ball from Trotta this time, then crosses to
Marazzina who converts for the team's, and his own, second goal.
The "felsinei" lay siege to the Napoli half of
the pitch, as expected, trying to eke out the
third goal. On 80', Marazzina, again, squarely
hits the post with a beautiful, quickly-turned
header, as Iezzo flies towards the ball. The
Bologna assault continues, but other than the
aforementioned post, nothing much in the way of
danger faces the azzurri, and thus the game
ends. Napoli take away three important points
and a better knowledge of their own capabilities.
Now, on to Torino...

I happen to be on holiday near Lake Como with my family in law (from
Naples). One of my wifes brothers aranged tickets for him, his brother and
me! Although I've seen quite a few home games, this is going to be my
first away game. So if you see a tall guy which is just too blond to be
Italian (although a little bald...) accompanied by two small Napolitan
guys (one with short hair, one with long hair and beard) you've found me!
Have fun and let's hope for the best.

Ciao paolo,
On my flight to Rome i was contented enough with the thought of not
even seeing the stadio olimpico as Napoli would be playing to no
spectators and the thought of roma fans outside the stadio shouting
for their team so i arrived at my hotel which i chose because of
diego maradona the hotel was called the king in via sistina, after
checking in i decided to have a look at the spanish steps as they
were only at the top of the street. Once there i carried on walking
looking in shop windows and came upon a sports shop at the end of via
del babuino at the piazza del popolo ,
i went in for a look and to my amazement hanging up on the left hand
side was the Napoli 3rd shirt the blue and white stripped one from
this moment i knew i had to go to the stadio , i asked the girl in
the shop if i could try the shirt on she said they didnt have any
changing rooms but i could try it on in the stock room , so i did
then came out into the shop to ask for a mirror , i was so proud to
look in the mirror the only fan in rome wearing a napoli shirt and
what made it even better was that the shop assistant said the shirt
looked good on me ,i thought to myself of course it does it's a
napoli shirt and not a roma shirt ,but i knew she only said that to
try to make me buy it .
As i was in rome for only two days i didnt think i would be coming
home with a napoli shirt so had not budgeted for the 75 euro shirt
so gave it back to her and said thanks.
By now my mind was racing and i knew i had to go to the stadio and
try and get in ,i knew that if i didnt try i would always be
thinking would i have got in to the stadio or not . so with a plan
i headed for the metro to flaminio then the tram no 2 to the stadio,
once of the tram i headed for the stadio across the bridge it was a
funny feeling soon there would be a big game on and the area around
was so quiet ,no ticket touts no flag and scarf sellers and a few
people , so different to my trips to St Paolo.
As i approached the stadio i saw roma stewards walking from my left
towards the right
hand side of me and thought i wonder along the way maybe there might
be a gate open and with slim chance i might be able to enter so i
kept walking but no gates were open ,i watched from a distance to see
where the stewards were going and decided to follow them , a sign
said curva nord and i thought wow thats near where i would have been
if fans were allowed and decided that it was a good omen , so i took
a deep breath and started to walk towards a gate that was open and i
could see the roma stewards going through it all i could do was keep
walking because there was no way i was turning back now so i walked
through the gate the roma stewards were collecting thier photo passes

hand side and once there i said the same thing english journalist no
one could understand me , the gaurd asked my name so i made a name up
i didnt want them to know my surname was di napoli they might get
suspiciuos and turn me away , he checked a list of names and said no
then said to me acceridta so i thought it would be good to answer him
back with a yes , then he telephoned somebody to see if they knew
anything about me because i was not on his list ,while all this was
going on there were other tv reporters arriving and cars and vans
turning up so he was kept busy backwards and forwards into his office
,roma stewards around talking and joking with each other and another
security gaurd outside the office quite near to me smoking ,i
decided to call my wife and tell here that i was trying to get in and
that i might be lucky but whilst talking with joy in my heart i put
a look of dispair on my face so the gaurd smoking might think i was
meant to be there.
when i finished the call to my wife i noticed that the first gaurd i
talked to was still away from his office sorting some problem out
with other people and thought now is the right time ,it has been a
while and he's probably forgot about me so i asked the other gaurd if
i could use the toilet he just said yes and pointed towards the inner
gates to the stadium.
So off i went looking for toilets until i came to the steps leading
up to the stand, had a look over my shoulder to see if i was being
watched, to my surprise i could not be seen from the security office
because of the inner fence I climed the steps untill they brought me
out into the middle of the curva nord officals were on the pitch, can
you belive how happy i was the only napoli fan in the curva nord i
took my camera from my pocket and took a couple of pictures with the
flash off so i did'nt attract attention then looked for the toilets
because by now i really needed them by now.
That night we did'nt loose because with Napoli in my heart I beat the Romans.
FORZA NAPOLI.

napoli fan not including any reporters from napoli inside the stadium
.igot my photos of rome developed today and i have attached two
photos which i took secretley with no flash , you can see the
officals are in the centre of the pitch , well we lost but at least i

Ciao paolo
You done a piece in the paper about me at stadio st paolo, the guy
who changed his name to di napoli for the love of naples, I know it's
a long shot but here goes .
Back in october when the draw was made for the Roma-Napoli game i
booked my flight ticket and hotel in rome so i could watch my mighty
Napoli play at the stadio olimpico , the date for the game changed
four times and with these date changes I had to change my travel
arrangements at a cost , now the game is being played behind closed
doors and i will be in rome trying to find somewhere to watch it on tv.
I was wondering if you are going to report on the match in rome and
if possible there would be a way of watching it with you , maybe i
could be your helper for your equipment or something ,I know it's a
shot in the dark but i had to ask .
Grazie

Napoli-Bari 1-1
Naples struggles to get a draw, managing to score
15 minutes from the end of time.
Another home draw and Naples are is now in the
play-off group. The Sky Blues manage a draw 15
minutes before the end of the game and again they
failed to make any concrete openings and in even
playing in desperation they failed to make any headway.
Naples were dangerous, but in a desperate way,
with wild long balls that had no meaning as they
tried to make use of Sosa. Bucchi and De Zerbi
were disappointing, they may have good CV's, but
the trainer should have the courage to drop them
from the team when they do not perform to the expected level.
Reja selects a good formation, 3-4-3, with De
Zerbi and Calaiò out wide and Bucchi in the
center. In the middle, he returns to the 'famous
four', with Amodio in place of Dalla Bona and
Bogliacino in the role of playmaker, just as in
the last game against Bari, whilst at the center
of the defense, returned Maldonado.
Naples starting at high speed, but Materazzi
killed everything by putting eight players in a
defensive line. It soon became clear that the
Naples pressure was not getting anywhere, Grava
and Savini were not pushing forward and the lack
of good positioning by Bona and above all by
Bogliacino, meant that the players became
squashed into a tight group of 'five' in the
critical playing zone on the field. Enthusiastic
but with little danger in goal area. De Zerbi
tried two long range shots in the 18th and the
20th minutes, but both did not bother the Bari
goalkeeper. The positioning of De Zerbi made it
easy for the defenders to anticipate the play, in
three, they managed to block the only target
point of the Sky Blues. In the 36th minute,
Bucchi missed an opportunity to give Naples the
lead and again two minutes later. Bari found the
net with the goal of the day when the young Eremo
from a counterattack found himself in the penalty
area and beat Iezzo. The advantage gave Bari
that extra bit of energy and made the Sky Blues
more nervous and incapable of overcoming Bari.
At the start of the second half, Reja tried to
provide more space for an offensive strategy from
Bogliacino, bringing on Della Bona for Savini and
changing to a 4-3-3 formation. The tactical
change did not have an immediate effect and
Trotta was brought on and Naples change to a
4-4-2 formation, with Bogliacino working on the
outside left of the centre of the pitch. Naples,
unable to affect the game and not having players
capable of turning the game to their advantage,
can only resort to long balls. Therefore, Reja
now brings on Sosa, probably the only one capable
making the team do anything in the last quarter
of the pitch. In the 62nd minute, Paolo
Cannavaro saves on the line from Vignaroli who
was in a one to one situation with Iezzo. In
75th minute, Grava brings the Bari goalkeeper
into action with a fine shot, one minute later
Bogliacino scores to draw the game after taking
advantage of a ball from Calaiò. At this point
Grava was sent of after getting a second yellow
card; the decision does not demoralize the Sky
Blues who continue to push Bari. In the 78th
minute, Amodio makes an enormous mistake putting
his shot high into the stands, then Della Bona
fails to hold a ball giving the Bari defenders time to recover their positions.
