Napoli are back to winning ways after beating Gela two nil in Naples in
round 24 of Serie C1 Girone B.
The win leaves Napoli still four points clear of Frosinone on top of the
ladder. As usual, there was the standard dose of controversy surrounding
the match with the Curva A abandoning part of the section behind the goals
and replacing it with a banner that read "if the team doesn't do it's job
then the curva will stay empty". The fans stayed out of the major part of
the curva for the whole first half. The fans protest was in the end
irrelevant as Napoli once again found it's stride, after losing in the
last round against Juve Stabia. Napoli began aggressively but after the
opening minutes it was Gela who put Napoli in most difficulty, finding
gaps in the Napoli defence and sustaining pressure, but without creating
much more than half chances. In the 30th minute Napoli were given a
lifeline when a scramble in the Gela area led to a post and a subsequent
header by Calaio` that gave Napoli the lead. A few minutes later a second
goal for Napoli by Bogliacino was disallowed and Napoli went to break in
front but not playing particularly well.
In the second half Napoli played slightly better. In the 63rd minute a
good move down the right brought the second and final goal of the match
when Ivano Trotta found space and drilled his shot past the keeper from an
angle. A few minutes later a backheel by Pia` released Caparella who's
shot was saved by Castelli in goal for Gela. In the 75th a Caparella cross
fell to Trotta who had his shot narrowly saved by the Gela keeper. Over
the entire second half Napoli demonstrated some of the form from earlier
in the season and went away with a deserved victory.

Hello Mac,
There are not easy questions to reply to, especially since I live far from
Naples since many years.
I believe that the situation is not clear, and that there are many interests;
Probably the Camorra, or better some groups, are trying to make pressure in
order to get advantages (special contracts for renovating the stadium, or for
organizing side activities, free tickets to be resold, etc) and they use some
violent people to create unrest. May be the same or other groups use some
journalists of IL MATTINO to create more unrest with false or tendecious
information.
I forward this to our English speaking Mailing list,
let's see if there are more or different replies/opinion on this matter,
cheers

BTW
I live in Rijswijk, near The Hague,
I have the SKY subscriiption for the live matches of Napoli,
why don't you come one of these Sundays, and we can watch the match and discuss
further ?
- Contact me in March, I am now going away for ten days.

I'm an entrepreneur, love football very much, a big fan of Diego Armando
Maradona.
Back then i only get to see the match highlights on monday night 2 days after it
has been played in Italy. I soon grew to love Napoli the club, the stadium & the
fanatical fans. I was amazed at how much napolians love maradona.
The team was an inspiration & up to today i can still remember the players name.
The games against juventus & milan are my favourites.
Sadly i'm still waiting to see the return of napoli at the top flight.
They did few seasons ago but got relegated again.
I'm still hopeful napoli will bounce back to their glory days & stay as a
football giant.
I wish to meet napoli fans allover & hopefully someday i will make the journey
to napoli to visit the place.
Maradona will never be forgotten.
Artificial intelligence
There was no action in Serie C1B this weekend giving Edy Reja's Napoli side the
chance to look ahead to Sunday's clash with Juve Stabia. The Azzurri currently
lead the Division by four points from Frosinone, but show no signs of taking the
trip to Castellammare lightly.
While Juve Stabia have struggled this term, defender Luca Lacrimini admitted
that the Stadio Romeo Menti remains an intimidating trip due to its artificial
pitch. "I've already played there for Sangiovanesse and it's not easy at all.
The bounce of the ball and the movement of the players is unnatural,” he said.
The Vesuviani are due to spend the week training on a synthetic pitch by way of
preparation.
Genoa were forced to settle for a point in Tuesday's game in hand against Novara
at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and also lost their phenomenal record of having not
conceded a goal at home this term.
The visitors - who tasted Serie A football in the 1950s - went ahead through
Raffaele Rubino before ex-Parma man Marco Rossi levelled to the delight of
18,000 Grifoni supporters.
The Serie C1A leaders looked most likely to take all three points but were
denied by a spirited Novara rearguard. However, Genoa Coach Giovanni Vavassori
will have been encouraged by the excellent defensive performance of Vincenzo
Moretti who joined from Avellino in January.

Hi all,
Not be upstaged by the yanks, I'll volunteer to help put together a list
of Australian based supporters if people are interested in getting to know
fellow club members in their cities etc ??
Obviously, if some people want to be anonymous that's understandable too
so send me an email if you are keen on the idea and we can take it from
there.
It would be a nice little project to compile a list of active Napoli fans
subscribed to CNI in Australia, US, Canada, Britain or wherever so that
those of us who travel a bit could meet and create a real global community
of Napoli fans. That way when we win the champions league in a few years
time we can all gather together to celebrate !!! hehe
I have been lucky enough to travel and meet Elio and various fans in
Naples and believe me it is a worthwhile experience.
Regards,
David

Calaio brace rejuvenates Azzurri
Napoli had Emanuele Calaio's welcome return to form to thank for a 2-0 victory
over second-bottom Pistoiese.
After last weekend's miserable 2-0 defeat against Torres, the Azzurri seemed
nervous before Calaio's first goal in 944 minutes of football broke the
deadlock. The Palermo-born marksman completed his brace four minutes from time
to secure the points for the Vesuviani, in a half-full Stadio San Paolo, taking
his season tally to 10 and admitted his relief. "I've had 76 days of suffering,
but that's typical Napoli! We played really badly for a month but we came into
today's game with the energy and determination we needed."
Frosinone kept the pressure on Edy Reja's men surviving a late scare to beat
mid-table Manfredonia - best known for being the first Italian side to play on
an artificial pitch - 3-2 at the Stadio Miramare. Sangiovannese lost ground as
they were held by Sicilian side Gela - a club dedicated to protesting against
the Mafia - 1-1 at the Stadio Vincenzo Presti. Perugia needed a last-gasp goal
from Drissa Diarra to take maximum points from Lanciano at the Stadio Renato
Curi.
A Calaio brace brings victory and smiles for Napoli
The 22nd round of games of the championship ended with the fans' applause
for Napoli who returned to winning ways thanks to two goals by Calaio, who
now boasts 10 goals in the goal scorer's chart, giving the fans victory
number 13.
Napoli more than deserved their win, they did suffer a little, however with
a bit of patience as well as determination they succeeded in finding a
winning way. The game started with both Sosa and Capparella in the starting
line up, Reja replaced Lacrimini with Cupi on the left hand side. Napoli
started very aggressively, as their manager promised they would and after
only a minute Calaio came close to a goal: the azzurri's number 11 evaded
the offside trap to control a Fontana through ball with his left foot, to
then strike a right foot half volley, however his shot lacked pace and
Mareggini was able to protect his goal.
The azzurri were very aggressive, while Pitoiese were happy to defend and
counter-attack with D'Isanto, D'Ainzara and Di Nardo.
On 17 minutes a Boccaccini cross from the left found Di Nardo in the box who
headed the ball just wide of the post. Reja's men were taking some risks and
on 25 minutes D'Isanto was left to enter the box all on his own on the left
hand side to crash a thunderous shot against the cross-bar with a helping
hand from Iezzo. From this moment on Pistoiese only created new problems for
Iezzo in the second half, but lets for now concentrate on the first half.
The azzurri desperately wanted to win this game, and the Pistoiese area was
literally under siege, however a goal was not very forthcoming! On 32
minutes Calaio ran into the box on the right hand side striking for goal
with his left foot, however Mareggini was able to deflect the shot for a
corner kick on the right hand side. Grava took the corner kick, which
resulted in a bit of confusion in the area from which Romito eventually
found the ball between his feet but was only able to kick the ball narrowly
wide. In the 44th minute Capparella entered the area from the right and
aimed his shot at the near post, Mareggini was able to save his goal once
again with his trailing arm. The first half therefore finished with neither
side able to break the deadlock and with the crowd growing a little uneasy.
Napoli got their head down for the start of the second half, Reja introduced
Trotta on the left hand side who replaced Bogliacino. On 13 minutes Calaio
had a great opportunity following a long ball from Maldonado, he controlled
the ball with his chest and then kicked the ball wide of the goal. On 24
minutes Napoli took the lead: from a corner on the right Fontana attempted a
half volley which was deflected, Montervino however was able to head the
ball back into the centre where Calaio, who was just on-side, was able to
put the ball in the back of the net to make the breakthrough, however he
vented his anger towards the corner flag which resulted in a booking.
On 28 minutes it was Calaio again with an assist from Montervino who shot
wide from just inside the penalty area. On 36 minutes Calaio brilliantly set
up Fontana on the left, his shot aimed at the far post finished only wide by
a whisker.
In the 39th minute Montervino gained a free kick after he was knocked over
by Gheller on the edge of the box. Fontana took the free kick placing the
ball into the area where Calaio was able to score with a sliding challenge
using his left foot, causing the crowd to go wild.
The game thus ended amidst the cheers of the 'few' supporters and the
azzurri who were able to smile once again.
Amongst Napoli's best players today was Calaio, who other than bagging the
winning goals also provided a couple of excellent assists and made good
movements from right to left. He also had some good opportunities which he
may have made more of, overall however his performance was excellent.
Capparella, Fontana and Montervino also fared well.
Today's win and the next week's break will allow Reja to recover those
players who have been out injured to see, once the championship starts again
on the 19th at Castellamare, a more convincing Napoli.

Another brutal KO on the road
Poor road performance continues for Napoli in that Sassari packs a heavy k.o.
which is difficult to digest. Once again Cuccureddu reveals himself as the black
beast of Reja and of Napoli. As anticipated amply from the pages of this site,
Mister Reja sends out from the first minute the newly arrived Trotta, who take
the place of Capparella, and Grieco finally has a chance in place of Sosa. The
two squads start off right away with adrenaline running high as the referee
struggles to calm the tension of the protagonists. In this sense they did not
make use of any statements made by Cuccureddu in the days preceding the match.
Turning to technical questions, it is interesting the position occupied by
Grieco who inserts himself between the defensive line and the midfield of the
Sardinian squad, and makes life difficult for the Sardinian defense, for number
lovers, an unpublished 4-4-1-1. With the passing of minutes Napoli takes the
appropriate measure to Torres taking the initiati!
ve fro
m this manoeuvre. Lacrimini and Trotta eat up the miles and continue the
pressing of the midfielders. They seem to be the right army for winning this
most important game of the season. The cold shower for Napoli arrives at the
36th minute with an incursion by napoletano Evacuo, who arrives at the penalty
area unmolested firing a shot that, thanks to the unfortunate diversion by
Lacrimini, passes between the shoulders of Iezzo giving the Sardinians the lead.
The partenopei look immediately to respond, but it is Torres who again render
themselves dangerous thanks to the well-executed counter-attacks by their
forwards. The first half finishes with Napoli in difficulty and incapable of
creating any danger at the Torres goal. The second half of play sees immediately
the entrance on the field of Sosa who relieves the evanescent Grieco. As if
watching a film over and over again, Napoli tries to bring forwards through the
sides of the Sardinian goalkeeper, Pinna, but the manouevre's!
resul
ts are often confused and too slow. Reja tries to change something playing the
Capparella card who takes the place of Trotta; and with his vivacity tries to
take the hinges off the left side of the Torres defense. The script
unfortunately repeats itself in the second half, at the 17th minute the azzurri
defense is caught napping and Evacuo in the middle doubles the score for his
team which brings the Sardinian fans present at the stadium to their feet. The
game pratically shuts down here, the concluding minutes sanction the uselessness
of the napoletano manouevre and the necessity of turning the page. What was seen
at the Vanni Sanna Stadium was a brutal Napoli that offered a dreadful
performance. Reja and his players must preach less during the week and practice
more. They are a Ferrari for this class, but this Ferrari is at a standstill in
the pit with the engine flooded.

Lacrimini, si infila alle spalle di Iezzo portando in vantaggio i sardi. I
Reja prova a
cambiare qualcosa giocando la carta Capparella che p!
r!
>ende i
ingolfato.

Azzurri back on track
Napoli bounced back from last weekend’s disappointing defeat at Massese by
grinding out a 1-0 victory over Lucchese, in front of 20,000 fans at the Stadio
San Paolo.
A Mariano Bogliacino goal was enough to put the Azzurri three points clear in
Serie C1B, but Coach Edy Reja was quick to praise his defence. "It wasn’t a
pretty performance but it was what I asked for," he said. "I’m happy that we
returned to defending well, we gave a good Lucchese side nothing."
Reja’s men were helped by a 1-1 draw between their two main promotion rivals,
Frosinone and Grosetto, but Perugia remained in the running with a 1-0 victory
over Juve Stabia. Marco Cellini’s goal came after a neat interchange with his
Albanian strike-partner Florian Myrtaj and moved him equal top of the
Capocannoniere chart.
Could anyone send some of those photos or tell us where could we see them o n
the net?
Cheers:

NAPOLI SHOWS ITS PRIDE
Napoli bests Lucchese for 1 to nothing on the 20th game of the C1/B division.
Reja counts on Sosa and Calaio` in the offensive department, while Lacrimini is
on the field from the very first minute on the left side of the pitch. During
the first half Npaoli tries to score on a number of occasions. At the 8th
minute a left kick by Grava misses the cross bar of the goal. After 4 minutes,
a weak kick by Montervino is blocked by Brunner. At the 20th Bogliacino tries
from a distance but misses the goal. At the 27th minute the Lucchese team
deflects first an attempt by Montervino and then one by Capparella. At the
31st minute Napoli takes the lead: corner kick from the right, short ball to
Grava who passes to Bogliacino who is able to precede everyone and to dive on
the ball scoring with a header. At the 33th minute a lob by Montervino and the
ball just misses the cross bar. At the 39th Sosa and Capparella trip each other
in front of the opposing goaltender and the play !
is sto
p by the referee for a hand ball by Capparella. On the 44th a placed kick by
Fabiano is deflected by Izzo. During the second half Napoli basically takes
control of the match. At the 3rd minute Capparella kicks the ball high. On the
9th again he tries and the ball is deflected by Brunner. At the 25 minute a
placed kick by Maldonado is deflected by the barrier. At the 37th minute
Montervino wins a tackle on midfield but his pass for Sosa is not precies. This
win consolidates Napoli's its first place in the standing.

Hey Elio,
that's a great story. In 1992 my cousins husband bribed a groundsman to get
me into the San Paolo by telling him that I was Jonas Thern, Napoli's new player
from Sweden. Afterwards we went to a restaurant where word had got around that
Napoli's new signing was coming for a meal with his family.
After a lovely meal and signing lots of autographs I didn't have the heart to
tell them that I was just a Napoli tifosi from England.
cheers, Bob.

Translation of IL MATTINO Newspaper
We have already told you the story about Michael Lynch. He was born and lives in
London but has loved Napoli since the Great Maradona era. In 2002 he turned up
at the registry offices and asked to change his surname, so today he’s called
Michael di Napoli. Azzurro fan: born and bred in London.
We met Michael outside of the Stadio dell’Olimpico last Wednesday, he had flown
in from London but he was unaware that the match against Roma was to be played
behind closed doors. He was extremely disappointed. We said our goodbyes before
entering the deserted stadium, the following day we told our writers all about
the man and how he had left the grounds to go and find a tv to watch
Napoli-Roma.
However, that was a lie…because Michael had managed to get in to the Stadio
dell’Olimpico as yesterday he e-mailed his photos inside the stadium and told us
how he’d done it.
“I was leaving when I saw a group of guys that were coming towards the stadium.
They were the stewards that were coming to collect the entry permits. I
introduced myself, speaking in English and they all started to panic because
they didn’t understand a word I had said.”
But the man was stopped. They were trying to understand who he was and what he
wanted but the language problems were almost insurmountable: “While I was
waiting for them to figure out what to do with me, the person who stopped me was
called away and I went up to another groundsman asking if there was a toilet. He
didn’t know who I was and pointed out a stairwell that led to the stands; I
pretended to go to the bathroom and hid and watched the match.
It was too good to be true, all too easy, however he has the photos to prove it
and of that there’s no doubt.
After everything Michael concludes with a big smile” Napoli lost against Roma
but the fans won: ’Napolitani’ 1, ‘Romanisti’0. Do you know how proud I am…
Forza NAPOLI!!!
