Reja rues offside ruling

Edy Reja is irritated at the very tight offside that disallowed Napoli's
equaliser and feels they deserved a point in Turin.
“There might've been a centimetre in it and sometimes the referees see it,
sometimes they don't. I hoped they wouldn't, as Napoli deserved the equaliser
for all we did in the second half.”
Paolo Cannavaro's shoulder was in an offside position when he tested Gianluigi
Buffon in the final minute and Ezequiel Lavezzi tapped in the loose ball.
Juventus got the rub of the green with their winning goal in the 1-0 result, as
Claudio Marchisio's shot was deflected in off Manuele Blasi.
“We were unlucky, but the important thing is I saw the team improve greatly
and put Juventus under a lot of pressure,” continued Reja.
“We didn't create clear-cut chances because Juve closed up, but unfortunately
this is a bad time for us. At least I am happy to say we rediscovered our team
spirit.
“We were facing champions and it is very difficult to find space. We are
accustomed to seeing Lavezzi put in incredible performances, but he cannot amaze
the crowd every time. He is never less than decent and works hard for the squad.
“[Jesus] Datolo has great technique, excellent vision and works for his
teammates, so in these two games he has done very well.”
Reja surprised when he left Christian Maggio on the bench in favour of Francesco
Montervino.
“Montervino had done very well in the Coppa Italia against Juventus in
containing [Sebastian] Giovinco down that flank. He had to go on the counter,
but was unable to do that tonight because of poor fitness.
“I waited until half-time to switch to a 4-4-2 and we certainly improved,
putting the Bianconeri under pressure.
“If you consider what Juve did aside from an early save on [Alessandro] Del
Piero and that deflected goal, they didn't really cause us that many problems.
“We have certain characteristics that mean we need space to attack. When we go
behind, our opposition clams up and we do not have the kind of physically strong
centre-forwards who can batter the defence down.”
Reja assured his position was not in doubt and he had been given a vote of
confidence from President Aurelio De Laurentiis.
“I can assure you that I speak with the President every day. There is respect
and admiration. If I were to realise that there were problems or I could not do
my work, then I would be the first to tend my resignation.
“The media has released stories that I offered to quit last week, which is
completely untrue. I have been here for five years and every week a new Coach is
rumoured to be taking over my job.
“I give my heart and soul for Napoli. Admittedly seven straight away defeats
is not good, but I give my all for this side.”
