Napoli cautious over drawWednesday 1 August, 2007
The fixture list appears to have handed Napoli a gentle start to their Serie A
return, but it hasn’t been met with great enthusiasm at the Stadio San Paolo.
The Azzurri open their long-awaited top-flight campaign by entertaining
Cagliari, and face Udinese, Cagliari, Sampdoria and Empoli in their early
encounters.
While most clubs would be delighted to be eased back into life amongst the
elite, the men behind the scenes at the Vesuviani are doing a good job of
masking their delight.
“Personally I would have preferred to face one of the giants early on because
they won’t be at their best then,” lamented sporting director Pierpaolo Marino.
“The start seems gentle, but it’s always a tough part of any campaign.”
President Aurelio De Laurentiis seemed less disappointed by the low-key early
fixtures, but offered a similarly muted response.
“The start seems reasonable enough, but we will need to get into shape fast to
secure the maximum possible points before the very tough middle of the season,”
he warned.
For Coach Edy Reja, who has guided the Partenopei from Serie C with two
consecutive promotions, the excitement at reaching the Promised Land of Serie A
is evident.
“The opener against Cagliari was especially important to me because they are one
of my former sides,” he grinned.
“But beyond that it’s just important for Napoli to make a good start to the new
Serie A adventure.”
Napoli’s first crunch match comes in Week 7 when they travel to the San Siro to
face Inter.
