Hi elio & members,
Sad to say, but Italy will win easily over an heroic Socceroo team.
This is one of the best Italian teams that I've seen for a while. Proabably even
better than Zoff's Euro runners up. Australia showed that although they can
compete against second tier teams (a disappointing Japan & Croatia), they are
not up to playing such great teams of the likes of Brazil (who I still find are
a little off key) & Italy. Italy would need to have another really bad game for
Australia to win, and that game has already happened against USA. It won't
happen again. The only other team that I fear would be Argentina, who look
really strong.
The only thing I think that the Socceroos have in their favour is that the same
coach who undid the Italians last World Cup with Korea. But that was when Italy
was being coached by the embarrassing Trap. Lippi has more class than that, and
will lead them to a comfortable victory.
I will cheer for both teams, but will support Italy as I have my whole life, &
if Socceroos do perform a miracle, I will also be happy. I really can't lose =).
Fans here in Melbourne have swamped the city everytime the Socceroos play. They
have gathered around the big screens at 11pm, 2am & 5am throughout 3 deg. cold
nights (it's winter here). For tonights game, they will erect another large
screen in the Italian quarter of the city (Lygon St), so the mood is
celebratory. Whatever the outcome, football in this country has already been the
big winner against the other forms of football that we have here.
Cheers,
- Michael (Melbourne)
