Serie B Review - Week 45
Albinoleffe 3-3 Ascoli
These two sides are on the outer fringes of the relegation dogfight and the home
side went ahead through Araboni only for Favasuli to draw level less than 10
minutes later. Albinoleffe restored their lead from the penalty spot with
Bonazzi. The midfielder completed his brace in the second half, but Ascoli
performed an extraordinary comeback in the final minutes with Colacone and
Antonelli. Nonetheless, the point means that Albinoleffe mathematically avoid
the drop.
Scorers: Araboni 27 (Al), Favasuli 35 (As), Bonazzi pen 37, 70 (Al), Colacone 74
(As), Antonelli 87 (As)
Avellino 2-3 Cagliari
There was precious little to play for in this match, as Cagliari are already
promoted while Avellino have been doomed to Serie C. The Sardinians didn’t take
long to impose their superiority, as Esposito broke the deadlock within 10
minutes, but Avellino have shown great fighting spirit this season and turned it
all around through Capparella’s brace. Cagliari managed to turn the game around
again towards the end of the match with Honduras international David Suazo’s
double.
Scorers: Esposito 10 (C), Capparella 17, 37 (A), Suazo 78, 87 (C)
Bari 2-1 Piacenza
Bari’s situation remains desperate, while Piacenza have now mathematically waved
goodbye to their hopes of promotion with a string of four consecutive defeats.
The home side piled further agony on the Biancorossi when Motta broke the
deadlock just after half-time, but Piacenza drew level through Campagnaro. It
was a tense finale and after Fattori's red card, Bari just about sneaked the win
with Bruno’s late strike.
Scorers: Motta 49 (B), Campagnaro 67 (P), Bruno 84 (B)
Sent off: Fattori 78 (P)
Fiorentina 1-0 Torino
The Viola are now certain of their play-off spot against Perugia, although there
is a slim hope they can catch Atalanta in that fifth automatic promotion place.
Fiorentina had a bad start with top scorer Riganò limping off after 25 minutes.
It took until first half stoppage time to break the deadlock with Graffiedi’s
controversial penalty for a push by Conticchio. With Torino reduced to ten men
after goalkeeper Sorrentino's red card for dissent soon after, it proved enough
to ensure the points and this, combined with Piacenza’s defeat, puts them in
sixth place.
Scorers: Graffiedi pen 45 (F)
Sent off: Sorrentino 45 (T)
Genoa 2-2 Napoli
These two fallen giants are safe from the drop, but Napoli have been tortured by
financial problems this week that could see the club go under. It took until the
dawn of the second half to break the deadlock when Bjelanovic nodded in Rossi’s
cross for Genoa. The lead lasted just two minutes before the referee pointed to
the spot for Zanini’s equaliser. Napoli then turned it all around in the closing
stages with Bernini’s strike, only for Grieco’s spot-kick to make it 2-2.
Scorers: Bjelanovic 47 (G), Zanini pen 49 (N), Bernini 76 (N), Grieco pen 81 (G)
Livorno 1-1 Palermo
Both these teams confirmed their promotion to Serie A last weekend, but the
battle is still on for the leadership. There is also a fight for the
Capocanonniere crown between Cristiano Lucarelli, Luca Toni and Igor Protti, but
the Palermo man took first blood with a solo effort. His main rival didn’t take
long to respond, as two minutes later Lucarelli netted the equaliser for Livorno
on Protti's assist.
Scorers: Toni 70 (P), Lucarelli 72 (L)
Messina 3-0 Como
Messina confirm their Serie A status after 39 years with this comfortable result
over already relegated Como. It took just 16 minutes to get the Stadio Celeste
jumping with Arturo Di Napoli’s 18th goal of the season, a low drive to meet
Lavecchia’s cross. The former Piacenza star then doubled his tally with a fine
solo effort, while defender Alessandro Parisi continued his extraordinary form
with another well-taken goal from distance.
Scorers: Di Napoli 16, 26 (M), Parisi 57 (M)
Salernitana 0-0 Vicenza
These two sides are on the fringes of the relegation dogfight, so a point shared
was relatively comfortable for both of them.
Ternana 5-2 Venezia
Ternana’s hopes of promotion were already ended before this match, but Venezia
are still locked in a battle to avoid the drop and were humiliated here. The
Lagunari’s situation was further complicated when Zampagna and Adeshina netted
three in relatively quick succession. Venezia restored some hope of getting a
result with Pisani’s goal just before half-time, but Zampagna netted another
pair to complete his hat-trick with a strong header. Paolo Poggi converted a
late penalty to make the scoreline only marginally less embarrassing.
Scorers: Zampagna 16, 44, 54 (T), Adeshina 18, 37 (T), Pisani 38 (V), Poggi pen
82 (V)
Treviso 0-3 Atalanta
Atalanta would be promoted to Serie A with a victory here and Fiorentina failing
to beat Torino. They needed their own result first and waited just seven minutes
before breaking through with Luca Saudati’s spot-kick. Youth product Montolivo
doubled their tally with a splendid volley soon after, then Pazzini redirected a
Saudati effort at the dawn of the second half. Treviso gave up after Pianu's red
card, then wasted the chance to get on the scoresheet when Galeoto missed a late
penalty.
Scorers: Saudati pen 7 (A), Montolivo 25 (A), Pazzini 49 (A)
Sent off: Pianu 6 (T)
Missed penalty: Galeoto 90 (T)
Triestina 0-0 Catania
These two sides are both mid-table and had little to motivate them in this
encounter, so it was little surprise when it ended goalless.
Verona 4-3 Pescara
This was a desperate relegation dogfight and Hellas Verona took a commanding
lead through Myrtaj and Brazilian striker Adailton goals in quick succession.
Pescara’s top scorer Calaiò gave them some hope of getting back into the game
with a brace, but Mazzola and Agnelli ensured Verona stayed out in front. The
visitors would not give in and after Russo’s strike, Calaiò completed his brace
to make it 4-3. It wasn't enough to avoid defeat and their relegation is now
confirmed.
Scorers: Myrtaj 21 (V), Adailton 28 (V), Calaiò 37, 72 (P), Mazzola 44 (V),
Russo 47 (P), Agnelli 64 (V)
