Fallen giants Napoli have been plunged into financial crisis as their entire
squad is taken legal action to recoup unpaid wages.
The 24 stars have not received payment since October 2003 and have now sent out
letters to the Players’ Association.
This means that President Salvatore Naldi has just 20 days to find the six
months’ worth of wages, or the players can begin to negotiate the termination of
their contracts.
“The Napoli players,” explained a statement, “wish to confirm their sincere and
affectionate link with the club, the city and its fans."
"They were forced to take this action after waiting in vain for many months and
now hope for a quick solution to these problems so they can stay with this
side.”
The decision had been in the air for several weeks, as the players were becoming
increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress.
Naldi now looks set to sell the troubled club and there are reported
negotiations in place with northern businessman Ettore Setten the owner of
Treviso football club.
