------------
Ascoli 0-0 Piacenza
Piacenza notch up their umpteenth 0-0 draw away from home and relegation
strugglers Ascoli felt their perhaps deserved more from this tie. The visitors
thumped the woodwork with Lucenti's volley, but the second half saw Ascoli go
close with saves on Mastronunzio and Di Venanzio.
Atalanta 3-0 Catania
Atalanta catch Palermo at the top of the table with this confident victory over
Catania. Gonnella broke the deadlock with a splendid looping header into the far
corner, then Bellini's low drive made sure of the points at the dawn of the
second half. Gautieri's header sealed the scoreline in the closing stages as the
Sicilians were never dangerous.
Scorers: Gonnella 27, Bellini 56, Gautieri 73
Avellino 0-1 Fiorentina
The Viola continue their late charge for promotion with only their third away
win of the campaign. Camorani's lone close-range strike after half an hour
proved enough to get the better of the bottom of the table club, as Manca and
Kutuzov wasted good chances to draw level.
Scorers: Camorani 29
Livorno 3-0 Verona
Livorno close in on the leaders thanks to this crushing victory over sorry
Verona. Igor Protti was again the hero and takes the Capocannoniere crown with
his brace, while Lucarelli added to their tally in the second half.
Scorers: Protti 8, 24, Lucarelli 48
Messina 2-1 Venezia
Messina are now joint leaders with Palermo and Atalanta, but this match will
only be remembered for the disgraceful scenes that took place in the closing
stages. Tension was high right from the start as the game took place at Bari's
Stadio San Nicola due to a ban on Messina's Stadio Celeste. Venezia aimed to
take advantage and broke the deadlock after 29 minutes with Biancolino's
well-taken rising strike. Poggi then skimmed the woodwork, but their bubble was
burst soon after as Liendo saw red for a second bookable offence. The Sicilians
drew level on the hour mark with Di Napoli's stinging low drive, but chaos
ensued after the referee pointed to the spot for Maldonado's dubious push on Di
Napoli and also waved the red card. After Parisi converted the penalty it got
even worse, as Venezia goalkeeper Soviero was sent off for dissent. He lost his
cool and ran straight towards the Messina bench, prevented from punching the
opposition Coach only by the intervention of several oth!
er pla
yers and a photographer. Soviero was furious and continued to strike out at
anyone who was nearby and was eventually dragged away by Venezia officials.
Scorers: Biancolino 29 (V), Di Napoli 64 (M), Parisi pen 81 (M)
Sent off: Liendo 37 (V), Maldonado 79 (V), Soviero 82 (V)
Palermo 2-3 Treviso
Palermo are shocked by the relegation battlers after winning their last five
home games on the trot. D'Agostino gave Treviso a surprise lead with a
delightful chip after 18 minutes, his first Serie B goal of the season. The
Rosanero nonetheless fought back and Jeda was brought down for Corini's penalty,
then the Brazilian turned the game around completely before the break with a
well-taken strike. However, the visitors refused to give in and equalised on the
hour mark through Bianco's volley at the back post. Ganci bagged the winner with
a classic counter-attack as the Sicilian crowd was silenced.
Scorers: D’Agostino 18 (T), Corini pen 30 (P), Jeda 43 (P), Bianco 63 (T), Ganci
81 (T)
Pescara 2-0 Bari
This is the first time this season that Pescara have won by more than a one-goal
margin, but Bari are surely now doomed to the drop. It took 75 minutes to break
the deadlock and De Rosa's handling offence gave Calaio' the opening goal from
the spot. Palladini ensured the points were safe in stoppage time with a great
strike into the roof of the net.
Scorers: Calaio' pen 75 (P), Palladini 90 (P)
Salernitana 1-0 Como
Salernitana finally end their winless run that had stretched out since February
1. Bogdani proved decisive in this relegation dogfight with a powerful drive
into the roof of the net after 29 minutes. Como's situation is increasingly
desperate and fine saves on Ghirardello's free kick mean they go home
empty-handed.
Scorers: Bogdani 29 (S)
Ternana 0-0 Napoli
The points were shared in this tense encounter and Ternana's fans are
increasingly irritated with their recent slump. There were fine saves on several
long-range Jimenez efforts, while Napoli rarely troubled the opposition defence.
The second half was delayed by the failure of a floodlight.
Torino 1-1 Vicenza
Toro continue to struggle despite the fact Lithuanian businessman Alexander
Basharin was in the stands to watch his potential investment. The injury-hit
Granata had taken the lead after just six minutes, with Fabbrini pouncing on a
loose ball at the edge of the box. It was an aggressive match on a heavily
rain-soaked pitch and Vicenza grabbed the equaliser just before the break thanks
to a disastrous error from goalkeeper Sorrentino, letting in Rigoni for the
easiest of finishes. Torino's hopes of getting a win were dashed on 55 minutes
when De Ascentis saw red and the crowd made its disappointment with the second
half performance clear.
Scorers: Fabbrini 6 (T), Rigoni 41 (V)
Sent off: De Ascentis 55 (T)
Triestina 2-1 Genoa
Triestina grab a precious victory to maintain their promotion hopes. The home
side dominated the early play with tough saves on Godeas and Moscardelli before
Aquilani's free kick took a decisive deflection. After the break Villa
accidentally turned a Godeas cross into his own net, making Comandini's header
mere consolation, although there were penalty appeals for a push on Rebecchi.
Scorers: Aquilani 37 (T), Villa og 52 (T), Comandini 64 (G)
Sent off: Budev 80 (G)
