Well, we didn't make it four wins in a row but if Dionigi had converted a
first-half penalty we may well have gone on to win the game. At the end though,
we are happy with a point after falling a goal behind. The home team struck the
post twice to match our missed penalty and the unfortunate Dionigi's day was
complete when he hit the bar. Not a great day for last season's capocannoniere
but the result was a fair one. It also highlights our priorities. Today's
results leave us ten points away from a promotion place and only five above the
relegation zone.

The Del Duca was crammed with Napoli fans, somewhere in the region of three to
four thousand braved the arctic conditions to travel to Le Marche and see the
recently new born Napoli. It has to be said, this club is a phenomenon.

The game got off to a fast start, Ascoli coming close through efforts by Di
Venanzio, twice, and La Vista. 23 minutes in though and the game looked to have
swung in our favour as Del Grosso was fouled and Sicilian whistler Pellegrino
pointed to the spot. Dionigi, usually faultless from the dischetto, saw his
effort well saved by Micillo and the game remained goalless.

The second-half started slowly but the home team came to life after 62 minutes,
a Di Venanzio header beating Manitta. Shortly beforehand, Dionigi found himself
alone in front of goal but struck the bar. On these incidents seasons can turn.
Ascoli had just struck the post as well so it seemed obvious that the opening
goal wasn't far away, unfortunately Ascoli scored it. Only ten minutes later
Pasino, who had recently entered the fray, put in a dangerous cross and it was
met by Del Grosso who restored parity. The game ended with Ascoli claiming a
penalty but in truth, both teams played out the final ten minutes avoiding
defeat.

ASCOLI: Micillo, Martinelli (71' Corallo), Cudini, De Martis, Modesto, La Vista,
De Vezze, Caracciolo (69' Speranza), Di Venanzio, Pià, Colacone (52' Ascenzi).
Coach. Ammazzalorso

NAPOLI: Manitta, Zamboni, Carrera, Bonomi, Tosto, Del Grosso (77'Portanova),
Olive, Vidigal, Zanini (69'Vieri), Dionigi, Savoldi (64'Pasino).
Coach. Simoni

Scorers: 62' Di Venanzio, 72' Del Grosso
Bookings: Dionigi, Vidigal, Caracciolo, Zamboni, Cudini, De Vezze
Referee: Pellegrino.

Serie B Review - Week 29
Albinoleffe 3-1 Bari

Albinoleffe clamber up the table following this relegation dogfight, but Bari
slip to penultimate place. Raimondi opened the scoring with a precise header,
but most of the goals came in the final seven minutes. Possanzini bagged a brace
with two splendid solo efforts around Lipatin’s consolation strike.

Scorers: Raimondi 31 (A), Possanzini 83, 87 (A), Lipatin 86 (B)

Ascoli 1-1 Napoli

Napoli continue their unbeaten run by recovering to earn a point at Ascoli. The
visitors could have taken the lead during the first half when Cudini brought
down Del Grosso, but Micillo performed a fine save on Dionigi’s penalty.
Instead, Ascoli opened the scoring with Di Venanzio’s volley only for Del Grosso
to ensure the points were shared.

Scorers: Di Venanzio 69 (A), Del Grosso 71 (N)

Missed penalty: Dionigi 24 (N)

Cagliari 5-1 Atalanta

Cagliari are now prime candidates for promotion after putting five past the
current Serie B leaders. This was an enthralling match that allowed Gianfranco
Zola to show just how important he can be to his hometown team. Albino nodded in
Suazo’s cross before Zola converted a penalty for a foul on Esposito. Saudati
pulled one back from close range for Atalanta, but it was one-way traffic and
Zola’s terrific turn and volley restored the cushion. The visitors fell apart
once Santos was sent off for a last man foul, although Suazo was unable to make
the most of it by thumping the resulting spot-kick against the bar. Loria’s
header and a Suazo strike sealed the scoreline with six goals to entertain the
fans in Sardinia.

Scorers: Albino 15 (C), Zola pen 22, 60 (C), Saudati 35 (A), Loria 82 (C), Suazo
89 (C)

Sent off: Santos 75 (A), Lopez 90 (C)

Missed penalty: Suazo 75 (C)

Como 2-1 Treviso

Como climb up to third from bottom, but remain in the relegation zone. Ferron
performed fine early saves on Reginaldo and Bellotto, allowing Como to take the
lead with Carparelli’s looping header. Gillet saw red for clattering into
Ghirardello and the striker got back up to convert the resulting penalty.
Despite playing in ten men for the entire second half, Treviso pulled one back
through Varricchio’s header and almost drew level at the death with Reginaldo.

Scorers: Carparelli 27 (C), Ghirardello pen 39 (C), Varricchio 71 (T)

Sent off: Gillet 37 (T)

Messina 3-0 Catania

Messina emerge with an emphatic victory in the Sicilian derby. Di Napoli’s
volley opened the scoring before a Sullo angled drive and Giampa taking
advantage of a lucky deflection.

Scorers: Di Napoli 30, Sullo 62, Giampà 66

Palermo 2-1 Torino

Palermo fought back from a goal down to earn their first win under Coach
Francesco Guidolin and crucial points in the promotion race. It was Torino –
surely out of the running for Serie A spots – who went ahead with a fierce
Tiribocchi effort into the roof of the net. It was a very entertaining game that
saw Conticchio and Tiribocchi rattle the crossbar, but the Sicilians turned it
all around just before half-time. Gasbarroni’s strike and a spectacular Jeda
bicycle-kick sparked Rosanero celebrations.

Scorers: Tiribocchi 7 (T), Gasbarroni 39 (P), Jeda 40 (P)

Piacenza 2-0 Fiorentina

Piacenza take an important step up the promotion ladder with a convincing
victory over Fiorentina. Beghetto, Fantini and Rigano went close in the first
half, but Colombo slammed under the crossbar and Tarana made the most of
Patrascu’s assist to ensure the win.

Scorers: Colombo 55, Tarana 79

Salernitana 0-2 Livorno

Livorno earn a surprise away win that allows them to re-enter the promotion
race, but it is another setback for Salernitana after their recent good form.
Cristiano Lucarelli was the star of the show by taking advantage of Lai’s error
and finalising a counter-attack.

Scorers: Lucarelli 52, 76

Triestina 2-1 Pescara

Triestina earn a hard-fought victory by recovering from a goal down. Pescara had
broken the deadlock when Pagani latched on to a corner kick, but Pecorari struck
twice with two splendid headers to turn it all around.

Scorers: Pagani 16 (P), Pecorari 29, 50 (T)

Verona 2-3 Vicenza

Vicenza sneak an entertaining local derby match to end Verona’s six-match
unbeaten run. Bonanni put the visitors ahead from the edge of the box, only for
a Myrtaj brace to turn it all around with a right-foot drive and fine volley.
The result remained uncertain and the Biancorossi snatched victory with
Margiotta’s free kick and a late winner from Zanoletti.

Scorers: Bonanni 10 (Vi), Myrtaj 38, 55 (Ve), Margiotta 65 (Vi), Zanoletti 83
(Vi)

Avellino 1-0 Venezia

Avellino remain at the foot of the table even after this victory, but they
plunge Venezia into real danger of relegation. Tisci and Fusco went close in the
first half, then Sorrentino and Capparella thumped the woodwork. Sorrentino
eventually earned the three points at the dawn of the second period. Despite
Fusco’s late red card, Avellino held on for the result.

Scorer: Sorrentino 54 (A)

Sent off: Fusco 85 (A)

Genoa 4-1 Ternana

Relegation strugglers Genoa have shocked the second placed side with a
remarkable performance. Croatian striker Sasa Bjelanovic was the star of the
show by pouncing on a loose ball, turning in from close range and providing an
assist for teammate Nicola Caccia. Cordone ensured victory at the dawn of the
second half, but Massimo Borgobello’s fine volley was too little, too late to
prevent a humiliating defeat. Gargo saw red late on for a terrible challenge on
Mario Frick.

Scorers: Bjelanovic 13, 42 (G), Caccia 37 (G), Cordone 57 (G), Borgobello 59 (T)

Sent off: Gargo 87 (G)
