Hi,

For anyone that's interested, I've compiled all of the video footage that was taken at each of the meets over the course of the season onto a DVD.  I know that a lot of people had trouble viewing the raw files on their computer, so if you'd like a DVD let me know and I'll bring it to practice this week.  I don't have very many discs (<10) so it's first come first served...

This is just a heads up (probably a week or two away)...

These practice are held every Monday morning with us starting in the water at 7am sharp!!!!  So please come a little early as I don't want anyone left on the beach.  You will need to ware a wetsuit if the temperature of the water is below 65F.  Also bright swim cap.  We will pair everyone up into groups and you must swim with your group and stop at the designated areas.  There is no solo swimming allowed for safety reasons.

The open water swim practices are open to USMS registered CMYM swimmers (http://www.clubassistant.com/club/usms_members.cfm?l=9&club=CMYM) and swimmers signed up for the current session of the CMYM practice at the Y (I will have that list too).  If you are not a member of either group then you may not particpate!  The reason for this is that we do not use a public area for this swim (commmunity access only) and if we abuse it then we will not be allowed to swim their and this is a really nice area.  This means no friends, family or others with out clearing it by me first.  Failure to due to will ban you and your guest from future OW practices.  You must also be a A/B or very strong C swimmer to join us and be able to swim 1/2 mile without stopping.

Before the start of the swim ... At the beach we will have a brief overview of the swim and the distances.  You must swim in a group and follow the directions at all time.  Failure to do so will bar you from future OW practices.  This is a safety requirement.

If you need directions I will send them out via email (don't share).  Also if you can carpool this would be great as parking is very limited.

Water temp is currently 47F and we will not start our swims until it averages 50F or above.

For the first week there will be a one mile (pier and back swim) and maybe one of the longer ones (depends on conditions and swimmers).  See our swim routes on the website http://www.eteamz.com/CMYM/news/index.cfm?cat=364538

If you have any questions please email me.

CMYMers -

Since this my typical non-swimming-related email to the swim-team
list, I'll be brief. I've decided (temporary insanity) to do the
Diabolical Double bike ride again out in Western MD on June 25. As
part of that, I'm also fundraising again for the Joanna M Nicolay
Melanoma Foundation. As athletes out in the sun a fair bit, I'm sure
we can all appreciate this cause. Please consider contributing:

    https://www.winthefight.org/fundraiser.html?id=2789

No amount is too small. It all helps a good cause. If you wish,
there is an anonymous option there as well.

Thanks!

Hi ladies,
I ordered a few swimsuits from swimoutlet.com in the wrong sizes....one of them retailed for $78.00 and was on sale for $18.95.  It is blue in color ( "Nike swim color contours high neck lingerie tank" on the website) it is a size 8.  If anyone is interested in it, please let me know as I plan to send it back....thought I would put it out there to you as it is a great price!

Swimming Wetsuits FAQ (this is a little old but I did try to update it)

Every year I get asked a lot of questions about wetsuits and wanted to answer them for the whole team.  In addition, if you have other question please feel free to mail them to me (MikeJ@...).

1. What kind of wetsuit do you recommend? I prefer the sleeve-less versions of the wetsuit because when the water temperature gets into the 60-70 range, the full sleeve suits are to hot.

2. What brand of wetsuit? I personally like the Ironman, Orca, Quintana Roo and Xterra wetsuits.  I currently own an Xterra wetsuits but have tried most other brands.  I recommend getting fitted at a local store and listening to the sales rep that is helping you with the suit.  That means that if they say it is to loose please believe them.

3. What size? In general you want to swim in one as tight as possible. That is because your body will compress in the water and a wetsuit will loosen up once you get in the water.  Also you want the neck and arm opening tight so the water does not pour into the suit and cause you to lose all the insulation effects and speed. Different manufactures suits fit differently, you will need to try a suit on before you buy it.

4. How about LandsEnd, Wal-Mart, Target and other no-name suits? I would stay away from these are most of the time they are not geared for serious swimming and you will spend more since you will have to replace this suits.

5. How about eBay? You can get a good deal sometimes but in general these are older model and may have problems (tears are coming in Triathlons transitions).  Also this is a bad season (spring) to look as everyone is looking on eBay for a wetsuit.

6. I need one cheap?  Looks at last years model or a used one but make sure that it is the correct size.

7. I will just need one for a day, what should I do? Rent a suit (I always recommend to rent or borrow one BEFORE you buy one). Ask to Borrow one from a friend or team mate that may not be in your event.

Here is a video review of some current models

Hello CMYMers!

I apologize for the non-swimming-related email, but if Mike Stepanek can do it, why not me?

As some of you know, my family is in the process of moving up here from Salisbury.  We have some temporary housing with my in-laws while we look for a new home, however, we cannot bring our dog due to allergies.

I'm hoping that someone might be able to take our dog Domino into their home for a short time before the sale of our house closes.  He's 65 pounds, labrador mix, extremely affectionate, gets along with other dogs, and crate trained.

Anyway, if you might be able to help out, I can probably work on some sort of side deal in reference to coaching, like no butterfly :)

Thanks again to all!

See you at the pool

This morning at 7am we held our first open water swim practice of the 2011 season.  The water was a brisk 57 degrees and our group of CMYM swimmers braved it under hard conditions (flat calm water, beautiful sunrise, nice air temp, no boat traffic).

For week number 1 we had seven of us in the water and did  the 1 mile swim (out to the boat house and back).  Next week we will have a group that does this and another group that goes around the island for the 2+ mile swim.

I think this is the list from today ; Alistar Price, Mark Aaby; Dave Douglass, George Olean, Alice Spriesterbach, Coach Mike, Bruce Breon, Erik Anderson

Hope to see more of you next week.  Also remember to please try and car pool as there is very limited parking.

Hello friends,

We are just 15 days away from our annual Great Strides Walk to cure cystic fibrosis! Attached is our family's newsletter with an update on Justin's health and link to last year's video. You do have to check his video! He tells you about CF in English and French! Check the video at http://video.homassel.com/

Please consider supporting Justin's Team by making a tax-deductible donation to CFF either securely online at http://cf.homassel.com/ or by checks. Checks made payable to CFF can be mailed to Justin at 4591 Rolling Meadows Ellicott City, MD 21043 or given to me at practice.

If you'd like to walk with Justin's Team on May 22 at Rockburn Branch Park (located behind Rockburn Elementary School). Registration begins at 11 and the walk will start at noon right after columbia Tri!  :-) . Following the Walk we'll have grilled chicken and hot dogs, sno-cones, and cotton candy. There will be a Tae Kwon Do demonstration and the Kangaroo Kids will perform too. A Silent Auction will be ongoing with lots of great baskets and items, the CF Racecar will be there for photos, and our DJ has some fun games planned as well!

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks a million for your support. It truly makes a difference!

That's a great place.
I wish I could join you but my better half has a PTA meeting.  I haven't completely fallen off the planet as far as Masters Swimming.  I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things with practices over the summer.

Buenos Nachos!

For those of you who are coming tomorrow I want to remind you to park legally as last week we had 4 or so cars get tickets for parking illegally.

The legal parking spots are the 3 or 4 between the signs on Bonaparte Rd.

We can park up the steep driveway on the right just past the above parking spots above and we can park at the Pratt's (the one with the Hot tub and shower0 which is located one East Forest Trail.

Another idea that the cop offered is to park at Herald Harbor Community Center which is just before Bonaparte Rd on the left.  If anyone wants to park there I will do a pick at 6:50am and drive you down to the swim.

Take care and see you tomorrow.

Coach Mike

We are looking for someone to volunteer to write up the CMYM team inputs for the Maryland LMSC Newsletter (about 3 time a year). Are there any budding writers on the team who want to take on this job?  If so please see either me or Ray.

Thanks,

Coach Mike

There will be a kick off meeting where I will be giving a overview of the event with timeline.  I will be looking for volunteers to help run this event.  The proceeds from it will be split to charity and swim gear for our team.  It will take 20 to 40 people to help out (many jobs still leave you time to swim the event too).

The meeting will be on June 9th at 7:30pm to 8:30pm.  We will meet at Howard County YMCA in the room near the entrance to the boys locker room (back stair ways).

I am hoping many of you can make it to this kick-off.

Thanks,

Coach Mike
