All,
I know a lot of you are concerned about the pool clarity at the Ellicott City YMCA.
Some of you have even contact the Health Department, who has come out and tested the pool (It tested fine by the way). While this is fine, could you please contact the Aquatics Director (Adam Rutz) first as he can provide you with a history of this and the results from the currently run test.
The main problem is the pool has to many users for its volume/size. So if you still have a concern then please contact Adam so he can explain the whole problem ...which involve people, poolpak, water flow, automation of backwashes and waterfill, combined chlorine, showering, sweating, heat, etc... This is a complex problem with only one solution that is impossible to take, which would be decreasing the number of poeple using the pool. Think of it this way...we have more then twice as many people using this pool and it is less then half as big as our old pool(60000 gals compared to 138000 gals).
Hope this helps!
Coach Mike
P.S. Below is a more detailed note from Adam sent to the Y staff.

Subject: Pool Clarity
I know we have all seen the cloudiness of the pool and I want everybody to know that I’m working very hard to keep the pool as clean as possible. No matter how many adjustments I make, no matter how many backwashes I run, no matter what I do the pool will be cloudy, because of one single fact and that is we have too many people using the pool right now. This is a good problem to have and one that we cannot avoid. I will continue to do what I can to keep the pool chemically balanced and safe, but I will need help. If ever one of you can help me enforce our showering policy we can cut down on the pollutants that cloud up the pool. I have learned that I have control of the wet corridor temperate and I will try to keep that or around 85 degrees so people don’t freeze from the locker rooms to the pool. I, also, found that the temp of the wet corridor is the temp in my office, so 85 degrees is as high as I am willing to go…sorry guys. Because the temp in the wet corridor is warmer I expect people to take showers before coming to the pool deck. Without going over chem. 101 with everyone I will tell you the less junk from peoples bodies(make-up, PERFUME, sweat, hair spray, LOTION, gel, body oil, etc…) in the pool will equal less cloudiness of the pool. So for all those people that complain about the cleanliness need to turn around and shower. We are having some difficulties with a few of our systems, but our main problem is the number of “clean” bodies getting into the pool. So please, please tell people to take showers before entering the pool because this will help more than anything I can do to keep the pool clean. I will try and get signs out on the locker rooms and entrance to the pool to help with this. Thanks-you,
Adam Rutz
