...now raise your stick hand high in the air and say it with me (yes,
every one of you!!):

"As my new year's resolution, I will be at practice ON TIME (8pm TuTh,
4pm Sun, in case you forgot). On rare occasion, when I am late, I will
expect to have to wait until half time to be allowed to join into the
game. I will get into the pool PROMPTLY, so that everyone SHARES with
the pool set up. If I take it upon myself to pick the teams, I will do
so in no more than 5 minutes, without the help of 5 other people. If
this cannot be done, I agree to picking teams the old fashioned way with
2 captains picking their teams in quick manner. After a fun and
challenging game, where I promise to play fairly and without hounding
anyone, I will promptly help break down the courts. If I feel I need to
speak to someone about their fabulous game or have constructive
criticism, I will do this while I pull covers, in the showers or
afterwards, not instead of breakdown."

Now that we are all back on the same page, have a happy new year!
See you on the bottom,
Brigit

CP,

When there is a verbal altercation by UW hockey players the lifeguards report it to the pool management.  This happened after a recent practice.  Kendall gets a phone call from the school administration and then he has to make excuses for our behavior and then promise that we will improve.

We could be kicked out of SJSC at any moment.  We have already been warned. This is not an idle threat.

It is NOT OK for players to curse and yell at their team mates in or out of the water.  The pool is a public place and we have to police our own language as well as volume.   The success or failure of SJSC hockey should not be held hostage by the loudest or most indignant players.  This type of behavior leaves everyone feeling bad and kills any type of new player program that many of us have worked on for a long time.

Most of us, including me, are guilty of this at least some of the time.

Our policy is still this: you may call a foul for a play in which you are not involved.  You will respect the calls made against you.  If you disagree with the call you will calmly discuss it after the practice ends and reach an accord with the other party. As a pressure relief valve you may, if you must, stop play and call a foul that you feel was committed against you but the advantage then goes to the other team. If you find that you cannot abide by these rules just quietly leave the pool area and come back to our next practice refreshed and positive.

There has been quite a bit of discussion going on the last few days about some ways to tweak and improve our policies (we may talk some more tonite at practice) so stay tuned ... but for now let's just remember the ones we have.

So help me be quiet, flexible.... and fun.

As it is a standard international rule - no colorful metaphors, no verbal or gesture abuse of your team mates or opposing team players and/or referees, it is just good practice to abide by these rules, so you don't get caught out and cause problems in another venue.

Several of the pools used (ie Calgary, Gainesville, Santa Clarita, San Francisco etc) have public usage while hockey there - either for tournament play or regular practice. UW hockey has been seriously threatened with expulsion, particularly in Calgary where one playing area is adjacent to childrens' pool, so containing yourself is prudent at all times.

As a long timer, I fully realize how tempers flair and mouths open before brain engaged, but please please please - keep it cool!

Jan. 4, 2011,

Comrades,

Cold on deck, not bad in the pool, lots of steam on the surface.

There were 10 sweaty mens.... all dressed in leather.... (oops wrong story).

5 on 5 tonight - good game - tried something new:  When the puck inadvertently hits a player's body we stopped play, but instead of awarding the puck to the shooter like we usually do at club puck, we alternated which team received the puck.  This seemed to work well and although it is still experimental, everybody wanted to keep trying it and see if it works well for the Club.

We discussed a lot of other ideas but the one we wanted to try on Thursday was scrambling the teams at half time.  The effect would really be two new teams (sort of like when we do "colors").  If one team has been dominant it could potentially allow different people to be dominant (or dominated if you prefer).  In any event it sounded like fun to give it a try just for the variety it would introduce.

One of the high points of the night was when Andy Hertz shot puck so hard that it looked like it might embed itself in the wall behind the goal.  Alas, the shot was as high as it was strong so black was denied for a time.  You young guys have got to learn some control, Andy!

And that's the way Goze goes,

Stay tuned,

 Goze

1/6/2011,

It was a frosty night on deck again.  The steam was so thick you could cut it with the blunt edge of a hockey stick.  5 on 5, fun game again.  We switched teams at half-time as discussed earlier.  I suggested that we switch the bottom 2 and the top 3, but my quick witted teamates informed me that that would be equivalent to having everybody change stick color.........

......... well I still liked the sound of it, it's so symmetrical!

So we abandoned the Goze plan and instead switched 2 players from each team, that changed the advantage to the other color but the score still stayed within two points.  Mission accomplished.

Congratulations to Kemo who is taking it to the next level and passing back to his team mates.  Good going Kemo!

There was a lot of yelling going on too tonight..... but only as people got out of the pool and scurried to the locker room.. HA!

    And that's how Goze goes.................

Gozer leaves town and everybody else comes to hockey. Two games all day Sunday. The shallow court started out a little cloudy but by halftime we had pushed all the filth to the deep court leaving the shallow crystal clear. Life isn't fair.

We played the rare A/B  practice with no colors switch so it was up to the individual games to carry out the experimental policy of making a significant team change at half time. Maybe we didn't get the word out to everybody but Mike G leaving for a roller-hockey game at halftime helped it happen anyway. The shallow game stole Oren to keep it to 5 on 5 there leaving the deep game at 6 on 5.

Maybe it wasn't all goze goin' ... it was really cold too; that always brings  'em out. Honorable mention to Jim (a friend of Sue and Kendall's) who made this his first ever practice and from what I hear scored several goals.

Hey all,

The SJSU pool is going to be the site of a couple big water-polo tournaments that will affect our pool time.

Our practice will be canceled  the following dates:

Sunday, 1/30. Not this Sunday but next Sunday. Nine days from today.

Easter Sunday, 4/24.
Thursday, 4/28.
Sunday, 5/1.

Also, I am trying to get practice on Superbowl Sunday, 2/6, changed to 11am-1pm. I will send out a notice to confirm this one way or the other as soon as I know.

I'll resend notice of the Easter week cancelations again when it gets closer.

CP fashionistas,

Nothing like Spring.... I mean..... Summer..... I mean Winter hockey.  It was so nice yesterday.  We had the pool to ourselves, no open swim, polo etc.  About 17 players in the water plus Wendy doing laps (more on that later).

We played what is becoming the norm now i.e. at half time we switched up the teams even though the teams were not wildly out of whack.  At the end of the game there was about a 2 point differential.  When a player was hit by the puck we just alternated the possession back and forth from white to black in order to take out any advantage inherent in shooting the puck into various teamates body parts.  I have not heard any objection to that yet, seems to be a lot of buy in.

Saw some faces we don't always see i.e. Mike Smith and Roxanne.  Orren is still playing left handed and using it to good advantage too.

But the highlight of the day was after the game when Wendy offered everyone some of her homemade chocolate truffles shaped into various lewd forms.  It does NOT get any better than that!

And that's how Goze goes,

Goze

Do I need to tell you it was brisk last night?

16 players - some folks who have been out of town or sick made it back to hockey: David, Yori, Josh, Mike.

In the first game black trailed 1-7 early on back made a strong comeback before the team change.  Final score was 6 to (something more than 6).  I can't remember it exactly but it was a lot closer than 1-7.

A groundhog must have made off with Mike's stick because at half time he was searching high and low.  Hello Spring!

In the second game black was supposed to trounce white, but it did not happen exactly that way..... that's why we play the game!

Final score was  X to (X +/- 30%).  I really did not notice the score because it was such good hockey and my legs were cramping too!

And that's how Goze goes,

I sent this to Hockeynet, but sending it here because I want everyone to know about GoodSearch and to use this search engine.  It's an easy way to raise money for UWH.

USOA Underwater Hockey

Here’s an easy way to help USOA Underwater Hockey raise money.   We received information about this a long time ago and if you’re like me, you have forgotten about it.

Remember to use  www.goodsearch.com when you're searching the Internet    ( instead of Google or another search engine).

Fill out “Who do you GOODSEARCH for?

Underwater Society of America

Each time you do a search a penny is donated to the USOA.  If we can get everyone doing some the account will grow.

In addition, when you’re buying things on line use GoodShop (it’s part of the GoodSearch.com home page).    A portion of your purchases will go to the USOA.  Amazon is on GoodShop.

On the GoodSearch Underwater Society of America page you can see how much the organization has earned.    Good ahead and search and watch our pennies start to add up.     Each person doing a little will help a lot.

Let's say we have 200 people average only 1 search a day.  That's 2.00 a day and $730 a year just from  searches.    Now we add on-line purchases and we will earn even more money.

Here's our Goal for February-

Current Year to Date- $1.34

Let's have everyone do a minimum of 30 searches on Good Search by the end of the month.   200 people by 30 searches we should earn a minimum of $60 by the end of February.    I know we have more than 200 people playing underwater hockey across the nation.   Don't forgot to purchase items through GoodShop.

Go ahead and start searching on  www.goodsearch.com

It's such an easy way to earn money for the sport.

Pass the word to your club members.

Greetings,

I'll be placing an order to Marko Hocevar for Euro Gloves. If you are interested in acquiring some Euro Gloves for yourself, please fill out the form at

http://bit.ly/ea7O1z

I have denoted the conservative estimate of $50 / pair. I will update the price once Marko provides a more correct estimate. You'll need to place your orders by no later than Wednesday 2 Feb.

I'll confirm with interested parties before I place the actual order.

Once I have received the gloves, I will make them available for pickup at the Club Puck practices in San Jose. Please note that I only accept checks or paypal as payments; NO CASH please.

WOWOWOWOOWOOOOOOOOO!

Sunday - 24 players - 2 games - sunshine - I am visiting Woodsville just thinking about it!  Karen McDowell joined us and it was great to see her.  Notable by his absence was her spouse, who evidently "did not sleep well".................

Did not sleep welll?...................

DID NOT SLEEP WELL???  SXXT - I remember the "old" Chris who would cat nap in the back of a car from the airport to the pool, awake from a drunken haze to jump into the pool with a stick in one hand,  an empty tequila bottle in the other wearing only a thong.  After his inevitable victory he would entertain the masses with his witicisms until dawn.

WHERE DID THAT MAN GO??...... CHECK THE MILK CARTONS FOR HIS PICTURE!!!

Enough of that.

Tuesday - 8 on 7 - fantastic competition.  The competition was even for the first game and close to even for the second game.

Would you guys please help me thank Rhett for SETTING UP THE WHOLE BLOODY COURT for the last who knows how many weeks!!  Thanks Rhett!  You're playing great too.

And that's how Goze goes,

Goze

"Two teams, both alike in dignity, in SJSC where we lay our play..................."  (brazenly plagarized from Romeo and Juliet)

Well, they may have been alike in dignity, but they were sure different in ability!

Let's call  the black team the "Red Headed Step Children"  (for lack of a better term) and lets call the white team "Avenging Wrath of the Valkyries" (again no particular reason).  When the score was 14-2 (strangely enough in favor of the Valkyries), the team spokesman, Greg (who we will call Wodin in this Wagnerian tragedy) politely suggested that maybe we would like to mix up the teams a little bit even though we had not reached half time.

After lengthy discussion amongst themselves (about the time it takes for light to travel across a Hydrogen nucleus), the Red Headed Step Children graciously accepted; acknowledging that they had indeed been, "Beaten Like Red Headed Step Children".

The switch worked and for the second game the Stepchildren came out ahead by a few points.... but not 12..... thank goodness.

Everybody took the results in stride and from the chatter in the locker room it seemed like we all had fun.

Hey, a first time player named Brian played with us for a half hour.... he was good!  Martin was the guy who turned him onto hockey.  He left happy but plenty tired.  It would not be far off the mark to say we begged him to come to our next practice.  He said he would be back, many fingers crossed for luck.

It was also good to see Miles, back after a quick trip back home for CNY.

And THAT'S the way Goze goes,

Goze

Quick thinking reader, Mrs. Goze, discerned that the Tuesday Wrap was actually rapping about the Thursday game.  Way to go Mrs. Goze.

It was indeed Thursday's game.  14 players total including Brian, the new guy.

Hockey Heads,

Starting with 20 players just ahead of the storm we played one game.

Longggggggggg points, pretty even at the half.

Our ranks swelled by 2 at the half minus 1 because Ken get out.  We swapped a few players around and the fragile balance of nature was forever BROKEN!  Black dominated in spite of your intrepid reporter's feeble attempts at fouling!  Crime doesn't pay Goze, when will you learn!

Another side effect of getting 22 players per day is that we will actually cover our costs at the pool.  Since I was so ineffective at fouling perhaps I can try another crime...... EMBEZZLEMENT!    In the end maybe crime can pay!  Stay tuned.

Notable dignitaries in attendance were Roxanne, Kemo, Jen (sans husband, don't let that happen again Jen), two Grimms (Mike ran Brigit's gear to the pool from Sacramento), Bob, Kurt, David, Yori, Greg, Matt, and a host of others.

If you weren't there.......... you're square!

And that's how Goze goes,

Goze
