Monterrey 3-1 Morelia
The Rayados of Monterrey coached by the Argentine Daniel Passarella
took an important step to winning their second Mexican League
championship as they routed Monarcas Morelia at Estadio Tecnologico.
The Rayados got off to a quick start as Walter Erviti took advantage
of a defensive blunder fifty eight seconds into the match to open the
scoring sheets. The early goal intensified the match as Morelia began
to push forward looking for the equalizer. However Monterrey had no
problems containing their opponents attack in what turned into a
midfield battle.
In the second half Morelia would once again be stunned by an early
goal. This time it would be Guillermo Franco scoring off a corner
with a perfectly placed header that would find the back of the net
for the two nil lead. The Monarcas shocked by their misfortune would
take a while to react as Monterrey took possession of the field.
Despite their efforts Morelia would once again fall victim to their
misfortunes as Monterrey would be awarded a penalty kick on a dubious
foul over Luis Perez. Rayados defender Hector "Pirata" Castro would
have no problems converting the penalty kick for the three nil lead.
With ten minutes left in the match Morelia head coach Ruben Romano
subbed in Ismael Iniguez looking to beef up the attack which already
included the Chilean Reinaldo Navia, the Argentine Damian Alvarez
along with Peruvian midfielder Roberto Palacios and Mexican
International Adolfo "Bofo" Bautista who would score Morelia's only
goal with three seconds left in the match to give the Monarcas a
glimmer of Hope for the return leg.
