MEXICO:
After the most successful year in U.S. Soccer history, the team has
amassed a 3-1-0 record in 2003, collecting shutout victories against
Canada and Venezuela. The match at Reliant Stadium marks the second
appearance for the U.S. Men's National Team in Houston.
Team manager Bruce Arena announced an 18-man squad to face archrival
and fellow World Cup finalists Mexico on Thursday, 08 May 2003.
Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m. CDT and will be broadcast
live on ESPN2, Telemundo and radio nationwide in the U.S.
Nine players from the team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the
2002 World Cup will lineup in Houston, including six players that
were on the field for the historic 2-0 victory against Mexico in the
Round of 16 last June.
Leading the World Cup alumni is the strike partnership of Brian
McBride and Landon Donovan, the duo netting both goals as the U.S.
advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time in
72 years.
The U.S. will play one more friendly at home this month, VS. Wales
(on 26 May in San Jose, CA, at 7 p.m. PDT, shown live on ESN2
nationwide in the U.S.)
Team USA is continuing preparation for participation in two major
tournaments this summer. In June the U.S. will square off against
Brazil, Cameroon and Turkey in the FIFA Confederations Cup from 18-29
June in France, and the USA will defend its Confederation
championship in the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup to be held from 12-27 July
in Boston, Miami and Mexico City.
