Where Will Pedro Martinez be Pitching Next Year?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #2481 of 3113 |

"Who's your daddy now?" The famous line from Boston Red Sox Pitcher
Pedro Martinez was constantly chanted at Yankee Stadium during Game
Seven of the Red Sox victory over the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. The
truth is, the Red Sox became the Yankees' "daddy" en route to a
stunning comeback win over the Yanks after being down 3-0 in the
Series and then routed the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
The result: the first Red Sox title in 86 years.

In both the ALCS and the World Series, Martinez had two strong starts
and further helped his chances of being re-signed by the Sox for next
season. Martinez's contract expired after the season and he is now a
free agent. Had Pedro and the Sox lost to the Yankees, his chances of
re-signing with the Sox would have been a lot less certain. He is
still Pedro and means a tremendous amount to the Red Sox and their
fans. He is a key part of that team and one of the best pitchers that
baseball has seen in the past five years.

"There are several teams that not only could really use an ace like
Pedro, but are seriously going to court him in the off-season," said
Wagerweb.com CEO Dave Johnson. "We have already received a lot of
wagers on Pedro staying with the Red Sox as well as him going to the
rival Yankees. We have also taken some money on Martinez going to the
San Francisco Giants and reuniting with his former manager Felipe
Alou."

The Red Sox will make a serious run at re-signing Martinez and will
most likely not be able to re-sign ALCS Game Seven starter Derek
Lowe. The Sox will most likely not be able to sign both of them, and
if they had to choose, General Manager Theo Epstein would most likely
go with Pedro. The Yankees are rumored to be interested, and so are
the San Francisco Giants, the New York Mets, and the Florida Marlins.
