Many of us over the years have questioned the Dolan's spending. They say when
the time comes they will spend. Well, they didn't in 2008 and look what
happened. They created STO purportedly to bring income into the team's coffers,
but it doesn't seem to be there. Payrolls keep going down, no matter what the
record.
I don't expect signing of multiple big money players, but one every once in a
while would be a big start. It's not helping when they DO sign multiple
reclamation projects, then when they do well let them go because then they want
more money.
Seasons like 2008, 2009, and 2010, when you let home grown players go who are
going to become free agents (of course they would have never paid the money
those players wanted -except maybe Victor) is also not helping.
With this ownership, there is never the right time to spend, for no reason.

Mike Illitch is the anti-Dolan. He found out he lost Martinez for 2012.
What to do? Shovel enough money in Fielder's direction to sign the
best 1B/DH on the market. He did the same thing with Juan Gonzalez a
decade ago.
I've watched him as the Red Wings owner for nearly 30 years. He wants
to win, and money is no object. He spent money on the front office to
acquire the best talent there, and hasn't missed the playoffs in decades.
The NHL had a civil war regarding the salary cap; Illitch lost, and
accordingly hired the best talent regarding the draft, the front office,
and the coaching staff, and never missed a beat. We're leading the Western
Conference right now.
Frugality starts at the top. Dolan needs to sell the team if he will not
invest in it.
