To the Cards for Chris Perez.

I'm thinking, Brian Giles for R Rincon again. I know I am in the minority, and
that it is possible Perez will be a good rp. But Derosa would have been a
perfect veteran to have around for rebuilding. Like Giles, he is
underappreciated. He might have 5 good years left.

I guess this year is just extended spring training as it is, anyways. Every game
the lineup is more unpredictable and how are guys going to master their roles?

p.s Thome: the Tribe had exclusive negotiating rights with him while he was
under contract. They let that expire, because they did not want to negotiate in
good faith a market price. They started out with the worst lowball offer in
history. No matter who else offered what, the Indians would offer 2/3. They
chased him out of town. I do not think the players union had anything to do with
it other than having a good laugh at the stupidity of Cleveland.

... Hmm, Derosa is 34, a career .772 OPS hitter who had his career-best season last year. Brian Giles is a career .902 OPS hitter whom the Indians traded at...

I'm not saying Derosa is as good or as young as Giles when dealt. I am saying that the similarity is in the type of trade: proven mlb hitter for unproven...

What makes you think DeRosa would have wanted to sign a contract extension with the Indians? Why wasn't it Peralta? Who would want him?...

And there's the fact that Indians apparently declined an available trade of Giles for Curt Schilling before doing the Rincon deal. I'm guessing the Cardinals...

... Are you sure you've got this right? The Indians were willing to trade for Schilling during the 1997 season, which is why the fans gave him an ovation at...

I think Pedro Martinez was one of those guys the Indians wouldn't give up Giles to have. I seem to remember that Boston wanted Giles and Jaret Wright....

... IIRC, the Pedro Martinez deal went like this: both the Red Sox and the Indians were in the running. The Expos asked the Indians for Jaret Wright, which...

Keep in mind, Pedro was in the last year of the contract. Even when Boston got him, the conventional wisdom was it'd be a one-year deal and then he'd head back...

Was it last year of Pedro's contract or would he have been around for 1998 as well? I don't really remember. I also don't remember the mid-season sentiment...

In both deals for Martinez or Schilling it seems to me that both Wright and Colon were wanted by both teams and not Brian Giles. ... From: Gustaaf Brooijmans ...
