1) Wimbledon Invitational Team Tournament
Chicagoland players have been invited this year again to send a competitive team
(British level A or B+, which is essentially a good A in the Midwest) to play at
the Wimbledon Invitational Team Tournament held on July 16-17 at the Wimbledon
Racquets & Fitness Club in England.

A team will consist of three ladies and three gentlemen players and will have a
hybrid format in which both straight and mixed doubles will be played. The
first day is the first round in which each team plays 3 matches. The second
day is elimination play based on ranking from the first day with each team
playing at least two matches. The entry fee is 30 GBP (about $60 per person),
and covers event souvenir and entry to a DJ party on Saturday night.
Tournament has space for 12 teams only.

Please contact Milan for detailed information directly (no attachments allowed
in CLBP posts)

Please, indicate to Milan (Milan@..., 630-880-2888) if you
might be interested in representing Chicago. I would like us to send a good
team and start a tradition. The invitation came early enough this year to
allow for making the plans.

1) Get the 2006 USAB Junior Nationals to ChicagoLand!
From: dd@...
My name is David Dew I work for the Greater Woodfield Convention and
Visitors Bureau in Schaumburg. My job is to help find and bring in
tournaments, meetings and conventions that have over room nights into
the area. Our area is 13 northwest suburbs, Palatine on the north,
Hoffman on the West, Bloomingdale on the south and Elk Grove on the
east.

I have been trying to find space to host a future (2006) Junior
Nationals and have not had much luck. I have been in contact with
some of the local badminton folks. The event is in July, I believe
the 23-28. Keeping in mind that we want the particpants to stay in
hotels in the northwest suburbs, can anyone think of a place that
would have 12-16 courts and seating for 800+?

I have found that high schools are hard with summer school and camps,
same with Harper College. I hope that I am missing a venue.
Any help would be appreciated. Can you email me with your ideas to
dd@... ?

I'm hoping somebody who left at around 10:30 tonight might've noticed

Also, you may want to send the e-mails to another editorial address at the
paper:

From: "Todd Haverkos" <tdh@...>
In the Aug 7 edition at

Bob Matthews wrote:

"Some of those sports might strike you as silly, but I wonder why
croquet is out while badminton is an official Olympic sport."

Bob, like most Americans, obviously has never seen a competitive
badminton match much less participated in one. Bob's probably unaware
that it's the fastest racquet sport on the planet with shuttlecock
speeds routinely reaching nearly 200mph, that a player sprints over 3
miles over the course of an Olympic level badminton match. He's
likely also unaware that it's 2nd only to soccer in worldwide
participation. He can read more here:
	 http://www.usabadminton.org/page.asp
	 http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer04/badminton/news/story?id=1845228

Badminton's only similarity to croquet is that Sportcraft sells rather
tortured kits for both sports at your local Wal Mart for abuse by
picnic goers.

There are Olympic sports that one can scratch their head about where
the participants don't look like chiseled, lean world-class athletes
(curling springs to mind), or that aren't terribly exciting to watch,
but please inform Bob that badminton isn't among them.

Reply to sport democrat reporter Bob Matthews

Dear Editor:
Perhaps the time has finally come to send Bob Mathews out to pasture.
His understanding fo the nature of sport, particularly those selected
for the olympics is apalling. Obviously he has never attempted to play
two of the most difficult sports in the Olympic venue, Badminton and
Fencing. Each requires far more conditioning and strength then more
recognized sports such as basketball, and far more hand-eye
coordination and balance. Badminton is also considered the fastest
racket sport in the world, with shuttle speeds far in excess of tennis.

Bob, get out of your armchair and actually take the field. You might
learn something, and then be in a position to share your new knowledge
with the rest of us.

John H. Burnett, Ph.D.

=================
From: "andre kwee" <andrekwee@...>
To the Sports Editor,

I would like to comment Bob Matthews' article on "Why are Olympic sports either
"in" or "out"?" dated August 7, 2004. He was questioning why some sports are
(not) included in the Olympics. I also want to thank Bob for mentioning
badminton in the newspaper.

When we discuss about Olympics, we must remember that it is based on worldwide
criteria (acceptance) of that sport - not just according to us in the USA or any
specific regions of the world. Obviously the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) will be the ultimate source who can answer his questions.

Badminton has been played for decades in many countries, and this sport is
played by peoples of all ages. Some sources say that badminton is regularly
played in more than 100 countries. Besides soccer, badminton is probably the
second most popular sport in Asia and Scandinavia. Historically, the countries
who dominate this sport has been China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Denmark, and Korea
to name a few.

In the US, badminton is usually played as a casual, outdoor summer game.
However, the "real" (competitive) badminton is played indoor as it is intended.
This indoor badminton is beautiful, much more physically challenging, and
rigorous than most people think. In the mid west, badminton has been part of
many high school sports and it is played by the public as well. In fact, I am
copying this email to other players in Chicagoland to show just how much we care
and enjoy badminton. I am sure there are clubs in New York (Tri State) area
which you can visit.

US national badminton team has been active participant in international
competitions including this Olympics in Athens. I hope you will cover the US
team in the Olympics. I know that NBC will include badminton in their Olympic
programs.

To know more about badminton worldwide, you can visit www.worldbadminton.net.
You can see for yourselves how popular this sport really is.

Regards,

Andre Kwee

1. Badminton at Park Ridge (Maine East HS) TODAY wednesday 6/16/2004 has been
cancelled by the school. There will be play next week. Park Ridge is closed in
July, August until a new contract is in place - last day of play is June 30.
[Thanks to Tony Powell for the update]

2. The letter from a badminton fan to CLBP members
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/clbp/message/261
elicited a response. The question was:
Is it OK to always play in your own circle of friends? Should we make an effort
to play with beginners and those new to our area/club ?

---------
From: Nancy Greco, Oak Park:
Players should always mix. It isn't fair to be excluded from a game
because someone thinks you aren't good enough to play with them. Most
players improve by playing up to the level of another. We at the Oak
Park YMCA insist that members play with everyone. It is difficult
when some refuse or act tired, but are ready to jump up when they
think there will be a better match. Having a ladder or rotation can
also help, or having winner stay on and play a game with challengers.
Policies should be set up so that those who pay just like everyone
else have an opportunity to be on the court and not on the bench.
--------

Hi to All,
A friend of mine who knows i am very fond of all kind of games , took me to park
ridge badminton facility last wendesday.I really loved this game. Although i had
hard time to find a player to play with, i really enjoyed. When they know u r
new , they r reluctant to play. I understand them cause i used to do the same
thing when i play table tennis. Actually i am not so bad at all , all i need is
do some practice. I have always time for badminton(24/7). I am looking forward
to seeing your mails if you r interested in.
thank u all, long live badminton!!!

Actually, that brings up a question of etiquette - Is it OK to always play in
your own circle of friends? Should we make an effort to play with beginners and
those new to our area/club ? Send us your thoughts.

A word of advice for newcomers to a club - sometimes you have to force the
issue. Feel free to jump in and ask to play with club members - most will not
refuse. A crowded badminton club is no place to be shy!

2. Willowbrook is closed until September.
A reminder that there is no play at Willowbrook (Villa Park, Thursdays) until we
have a new contract for fall.

2. Ad / Spam Block tip.
Since most, if not all of us are sick of spam and pop-up ads, we'll try to
provide tips of avoiding spam and ads on the net. Most involve free or open
source methods. We will post it along with other e-mail notification as a
"filler" - we hope not to intrude into our badminton postings.
  - This week: SneakeMail.
You've heard of disposable things - how about disposable e-mail addresses?
At http://Sneakemail.com - you create free, disposable e-mail addresses you use
when you register at online sites - and since you can generate unique
@sneakemail.com addresses for each site, you can find out which of those sites
are selling your info or have a poor security system to allow spammers to get to
it. You can turn off each of the Sneakemail address that has been "compromised"
or filter it. The Sneakemail service hides your real address to which the mail
is forwarded. Its all done online, no software to install.
Try it - its free (though a donation is suggested with additional features)!
http://Sneakemail.com

3. RSS Feed for CLBP Yahoo Group (Geek stuff - but neat!)
What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for distributing web
content (such as news headlines or new content in CLBP). Using RSS, you can
display the newest messages for the CLBP group in your web log (otherwise known
as blog) or view them in an RSS reader.

What kind of content does Yahoo! Groups provide via RSS?
Yahoo! Groups RSS includes the most recent messages to the CLBP group. We are
configured to show our messages to the public, so we also have an RSS feed.

How do I use RSS?
Just add the following URL to your RSS reader or web log.

3. Spam filters blocking CLBP mail.
Unfortunately, some Yahoo groups are the most prolific spammers and so many
servers block messages from ANY Yahoo group.
We have managed to keep spam out of our CLBP Yahoo group - and until we can get
our own (Paid) server, we need to continue to use the Yahoo Groups service.

If you are not receiving CLBP e-mail, first login to
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/clbp
and make sure all your e-mail information is correct.
If it is, then most likely your server is blocking CLBP mail.

To allow CLBP mail to get through, you can do one of the following:
* Add "clbp@yahoogroups.com" to a WhiteList - ie an e-mail address from which
Spam is not expected.
* Add a rule that allows messages with subject containing "[CLBP Badminton]" to
get through your spam filters.
* Inform your IT person to allow mail from clbp@yahoogroups.com to get to you.
* Use a Yahoo/Hotmail/Other Free address for CLBP - but remember to still set
the filters as above.

We know that if your CLBP mail is being blocked, these instructions will
probably not get to you - we hope you will read this when you visit the message
archives at:
