Hello all,
First, we have finished migrating the Destreza Translation and Research
Project to a new web host. The domain name www.destreza.us will still work
as before, but any links that are relative to the www.plumes.org site should
be updated. As we continue to improve the site, you can expect new content
and surprises.
As some of you know, recently our Golden Age Spanish scholar, Mary Curtis,
was awarded a Fulbright Grant for research related to historical Spanish
fencing. During the past year in Spain, she worked not only towards the
completion of her PhD research but also on projects we felt would benefit
the entire historical fencing community.
The Destreza Translation and Research Project announces with great pleasure
an English translation of don Francisco Antonio de Ettenhard's work of 1675
Compendium of the Foundation and the True Art and Philosophy of Arms. In
addition to the translation we will also make available a transcription of
the work in the original Spanish.

A phased roll-out of the English translation begins today with the First
Treatise concerning Geometry. The Second Treatise and the entire technical
section of the work will be presented chapter by chapter as each section of
the translation is revised and edited and the images are redrawn from the
originals. When each new portion of the text is released, we will provide a
new announcement.
This version of the translation is being provided at no charge as a PDF on
our website, but if there is public demand for a printed version, we may
make a special edition available through Lulu.com.
As with any work we provide, we encourage critical feedback that we can use
to improve our presentation of the material.
Finally, we owe a special debt of thanks to all the fencers and scholars of
Spain, both those from antiquity and those still studying today, for sharing
their tradition with us. Special recognition and thanks to Dr. Manuel Valle
who opened his home and especially his collection of books to us. We would
also like to thank Alberto Bomprezzi and our many friends training with the
Asociación Española de Esgrima Antigua.
La Verdadera Destreza es un Arte para todo el mundo.
