> The Martinez Academy of Arms and the Humboldt State University Fencing Club
are proud to announce that the world’s only week long camp for serious
students of historical rapier fencing is now being offered for its sixth year!
> As always, this camp will serve as an introduction to the art for those with
no previous martial arts experience, in a safe and friendly learning
environment. This camp also remains the best opportunity for experienced rapier
fencers to hone their skills and improve their understanding of the concepts,
techniques, tactics and theory of either the Italian or Spanish systems of 17th
century rapier fencing. Any experienced student or instructor of rapier fencing
cannot afford to miss this unique training opportunity.
> From June 22nd through the 28th, Maestro Ramon Martinez and Maestro Jeannette
Acosta Martinez will teach participants in amongst the Victorian architecture of
the little town of Arcata situated in the redwood forests of Northern
California. There will be hands-on training from Monday through Friday, plus
lectures and question-and-answer sessions after dinner each evening.
Participants will attend lectures on a number of topics related to rapier
fencing, including:
>
>* Fundamental fencing concepts and terminology
>* Similarities between the Spanish and Italian schools of rapier and how they
differed
>* How the form of the sword influenced its use, and vice-versa
>* The Renaissance world view and how it influenced fencing concepts
>* How to read an opponent, and fence people of various temperaments
>* How to fence against someone practicing another style of fencing
>
>The focus of this camp will be to teach all participants fundamental rapier
skills in a safe and friendly learning environment.
> Several participants in the last camp commented that it was the best Rapier
Camp yet; this year looks to be even better! This year we will once again offer
an optional sixth day of instruction in the psychology of combat. Other
additions to this year's curriculum will include guest lectures by the infamous
Cecil Longino, revised discussion topics for the lectures, as well as new
material for the lectures and class sessions, more emphasis on developing an
understanding of time and distance, and an expanded set of exercises for rapier
and dagger techniques!
