The German website Schwert Fechten (http://www.schwert-fechten.de/fechten-video)
has assembled a number of video clips, leading with ones of advanced fencing
posted by Sean Hayes and of beginning fencers by Klassisches Fechten Soest
(www.soestfechten.de).? In keeping with the KFS policy of unposed "warts and
all" images, the KFS "Einzelstunde" offers a small portion of a long,
step-by-step problem-solving lesson in which I even?betray a little
exasperation.? We find the clips as an ensemble?whole very coherent,?because
though no KFS fencer shown has more than a year's experience--effectively less,
because we are a group comprised of men and women with jobs and families,
they?display the challenges involved?at every level of a fencer's development.?
I have found the assembly quite valuable, and we are grateful to Sean and to
Schwert Fechten.? We plan to post more instructional examples in the near
future, showing?our beginners?working on everything from grip to footwork, and
will not hesitate to show problems and challenges--indeed, when we selected our
duel with one year's experience, and that shows, one of the fencers groaned at
his footwork:? "Was that supposed to be a lunge or what?" I asked.? We hope
others join us in sharing unvarnished images.
