The Martinez Academy of Arms and the Humboldt State University Fencing Club are
proud to announce the fifth year of the world’s only week long camp for
serious students of historical rapier fencing!
As always, this camp will serve as an introduction to the art for those with no
previous fencing experience, in a safe and friendly learning environment. Anyone
wanting a solid foundation for the study and practice of this demanding art
should not miss this unique opportunity.
This camp also remains the best opportunity for experienced rapier fencers to
hone their skills and improve their understanding of the concepts, techniques,
tactics and theory of either the Italian or Spanish systems of 17th century
rapier fencing. Any experienced student or instructor of rapier fencing cannot
afford to miss this week of intensive training.
From June 17th through the 23rd, Maestro Ramon Martinez and Maestro Jeannette
Acosta Martinez will teach participants in amongst the Victorian architecture of
the little town of Arcata situated in the redwood forests of Northern
California. There will be hands-on training from Monday through Friday, plus
lectures and question-and-answer sessions after dinner each evening.
Participants will attend lectures on a number of topics related to rapier
fencing, including:
* Fundamental fencing concepts and terminology
* Application of theory to the weapons combination of rapier and dagger
* Characteristics of the rapier, and how to identify a properly constructed
weapon
* Tactics and the psychology of combat
* The strategy of facing fencers practicing other styles
Two levels of instruction will be running concurrently. Martinez Academy of
Arms Instructors Antone Blair and Jared Kirby will be teaching Level I. Level I
will serve as an introduction to the art for those with little or no previous
fencing experience. Level II will be tailored to experienced rapier fencer. The
focus of this years training will be rapier and dagger.
We are once again offering an optional sixth day of training tips and
reinforcement of fundamental concepts.
