Hi everyone,

Well, I just discovered that the US Fencing Association is making
life a little bit more interesting for non-electric clubs. The USFA
membership application from has been re-written recently (this is new
language since the summer). Specifically, they added this:

Minimum requirements for club membership: 1.) the owners and/or
principal officers of the club or fencing
division of such club must be members of the USFA. 2.) All members of
the coaching staff must be members of the USFA. 3.) Each
Member Club must have a minimum of ten members of the USFA who have
declared that club as their club. USFA BOD September,
1999.

5. I affirm that the owner(s)/principal officer(s) and coaching staff
hold current individual memberships in the USFA and that this
club has or will have by 7/31/06, a minimum of 10 USFA members as set
forth by the minimum requirements for club membership
approved by the USFA Board of Directors.

As none of our fencers have any interest in electrical fencing, that
leaves us with the following choices:

1. Require USFA membership for all students, or at least for students
who progress beyond a certain level. At $50 a year, this is more than
a month's dues for our students.

2. Have the salle pay for memberships for ten random students, which
would cost the salle $500.

3. Dump the USFA and get insurance elsewhere.

So, for a club that is not interested in competing electrically (like
ours), here is what USFA insurance coverage REALLY costs every year:

$315 club membership and insurance premium
$500 for 10 individual memberships @ $50 each
-------
$815 for $2 million club insurance (corporately) & and an unknown
amount of coaches' insurance (individually)

Option 3 is starting to look more attractive.

I know we had this discussion about a year ago on this list, but a
lot can change in a year. I would like to hear from fencing clubs
that have liability insurance policies that are NOT through the USFA.

Please tell me:
1. Who the carrier is on your policy (with contact info, please);
2. What your policy covers and excludes;
3. What your policy's limits are; and,
4. How much it costs.

Please don't flood the list! Send replies off-list to
michael@....

I will happily summarize the responses I get and post them to the
list in a week or two.

Thanks!
