Re: [CFML] Obscure Historical Info

Hi Bill--
I've checked three sources for info about who may have been Camillo Agrippa's
Fencing Master ("Schools & Masters of Fence" - E. Castle, "The Sword & the
Centuries" - A. Hutton, and "The Art & History of Armed Combat " -A. Wise), and
none of them specifically mentions Agrippa's teacher. He was a contemporary of
Michaelangelo, he was a mathematician, engineer, and an architect, but oddly
enough, he, himself, was a theorist when it came to Fencing, and not a Fencing
teacher at all! (This is according to Wise's book...something I was very
surprised to learn.) He lived and practiced about 17 years after Marozzo, and
apparently simplified the more complex system of Marozzo; e.g., he reduced the
eleven guards of Marozzo to a more logical, simplified four positions (again,
according to Wise) Egerton Castle's book indicates that he was indeed taught
Fencing by some unnamed person. (It may even be possible that he was influenced
by several teachers... back then various teachers were sought out to learn
"secret bottes" and the like to give one an edge (no pun intended) for any
impending combat situation, whether real or imagined.) Anyway, those are the
only sources I have that address this portion of Agrippa's life. Perhaps
someone else has a resource that can add to it from here.
Regards,
Warren Cabral
