Your humble opinion seems pretty spot on to me. I fancy our chances if we
got them in the play offs.

After that display I can't believe we'll see him again. I've waited three games to give him a chance but he looked even more out of his depth in this game than the other two.  It's sad to see him trying to play now, the ball skills are still there but the legs have gone and, even more critical, his reactions have slowed alarmingly. He just doesn't see the tackles coming, or the passes that are on, quickly enough and when he does it takes ages for the message to get through to his legs and feet.  He looks fit enough and he obviously wants to impress, but he's gone and he's a liability to us on the field.  The most amazing thing to me is that he could have got into the Everton team recently, they must be in a very bad way.

It took Stan another 45 minutes and a three goal deficit but eventually the penny dropped and Johnson/Moore were re-instated. They carried on were they left off against Bradford and terrorised the Wolves defence in the second half. Grant came on and immediately illustrated the folly of letting Gazza try to do his job.  Wolves were so ordinary that I can't believe that if we had started with Grant playing, Gazza on the bench and Johnson/Moore up front we would have lost. Another three points gone and down to Stan again.  Just my opinion, of course.

As for Wolves....simple, it's not certain they'll go straight up and if they end up in the play-offs it's not certain they'd win them. One thing is certain, if they do go up, they'll come straight back down, must be the worst top two team I've seen in any division for years. A very ordinary team indeed.

Keith.

When I say eleven what I mean is 10 we were never going to finish with 11 on the field as soon as Weller's goal was disallowed, as for the cheat's well they were helped along by the ref. & a liner that was actually laughing when their third goal went in.
Getting beat I can cope with, being cheated out of it I find it hard to take.

I have a couple of spare seats in the car for the trip to Portsmouth on Monday. Leaving Burnley area at about 7:00am, then straight back after the match.
Anyone interested, please bell my moby.
Can pick up / drop off en-route if required, so long as it's not too far off-track.

I don't give a monkey's what type of football we play, which players Stan selects or what formation they play in. I just want us to get the points to put us in the play-offs. Playing good football had us on top of the league for most of the first half of the season and good football got us four points from the Preston and Bradford games. If Route One will get us into the play-offs, great, play it.  The evidence of Bramall Lane and Walsall is that it won't.  As you say Igor, it's results that count and it's up to Stan how the team go about getting them. I think our best chance is to play football, Stan would appear to think otherwise. We'll see.

FINDING THE PLOT

A crunch weekend culminating in our longest trip of the season to Portsmouth
only two days after one of our toughest home games. So much for bloody
computers. Did nobody watch 2001 before we let them take over the world?
Daisy, Daisyyyyyyyyyy euughhh., me disk has gone again, so its the South
Coast for you northern gits..

The Clarets have been Jeckyll and Hyde of late overwhelming Preston in the
first half, hanging on in the second, taking the lead against lowly Bradford
and frittering away the opportunity to all but seal a play off place by
conceding a sloppy late goal and finally being "outclassed" as Ceefax put it
by a Sheffield United side packed with youngsters.

Meanwhile we have to play the team in second place which we might be really
looking forward to if we had continued the sort of football in the first
half and battling spirit displayed against Preston, however we haven't.

IMHO Ternent has been really unlucky with injuries this season. Whilst on
the one hand we welcome Johnson and Gazza to the club, we lose Little and
Davis. One feels that it is too late now for the latter two to regain match
fitness, and one wonders if it is worth bothering with them for the rest of
the season. Yet again we lose a player, this time Coxy at an early stage of
a game through injury. The other major question is Gazza.

Stan needs to look at the next two matches as one elongated 180 minutes with
a two day half time. Lets face it, Gazza himself has said that the game is
too fast for him and this was against Bradford, and plainly he is not going
to last 180 minutes. Stan should take the view that although Wolves might be
a superior football team skillwise, we can match them for effort and put out
his fittest strongest team physically. For me this would be:

Gloves, Westy, Mitchell , Arthur, Briscoe, with a midfield of Weller, Ball,
Grant Cook

With a front two of Johnson and Ian Moore Much as I love GT, basically the
crowd don't so if you are going to rest him, then the home game is the place
to do it. I would have Payts as a sub for Johnson and perhaps Glen/Alan
Moore coming on for Ian Moore, with Gazza coming on for one of the above in
midfield.

Down at Pompey I would keep the same basic line up at the back for sure, and
maybe start Gazza for Grant, as he is the most like for like replacement and
maybe start with Alan Moore/Little for Cook. Up front I would start GT with
Payton or Blake with the other two coming on late with the Pompey defence
hopefully tiring a bit.

I don't believe we should go all out and attack Wolves as some are
suggesting. Playing three up front with three attacking midfielders is Ossie
Ardiles stuff and Stan at the moment seems to think that he is managing
Spurs on a Cup run. I wonder how much Stan is looking to the long term with
his on contract running out next year to have one last burst of glory which
may explain some of his transfer market signings which have been of an
uncharacteristic quick fix nature recently?

I think we should be looking at holding Wolves for a point, we are not good
enough to go toe to toe with so many of our best players not available, not
fully match fit, and settling in to the club. The amount of chopping and
changing is disruptive and they murdered us when we were in the middle of
our good run. Match them for effort, close them down and look for a break.
If we can't match them for effort, we are stuffed anyway.

On the other hand three points must be on offer at Portsmouth. Rix has been
sacked and replaced by 'Arry Redknapp, 16 of their players are on the list
and they bought a 5' 6" Jap goalie, who has been replaced by 105 years old
Dave Beasant. Far better to sit back at Burnley and let Wolves force the
pace and play on the break and look for a win on Monday. I feel that if we
go gung ho on Saturday we will get stuffed and then spirits will be down for
Monday at yet another venue where we never seem to even score a goal never
mind get a point. Two really boring nil all draws would suffice, leaving us
needing five points from the last three for reasonable certainty of staying
top six, and two bites at a win against either Gillingham or Grimsby. Two
bonkings and we are looking at two wins for sure and this might be very very
difficult as none of the remaining sides are easy to beat, but might be easy
to hold..

I have my tickets for the Wolves game, I am looking forward to playing my
part in helping to get a result in front of a full house. Fancy
breathtaking football does not interest me in the slightest at this stage of
the season. This is for between August and mid March. Its results that count
now.

BTW does anyone else's spell checker give the word "torment" for Ternent?
Smart bloke that Bill Gates, can't Barry get him on the Board?

Happy Easter to you all

Got to agree 100%.Stan has made some wierd decisions recently but, he says we will make the play offs, who are we to argue. I just wish it would happen sooner, maybe then he can give Taylor a run out.
Johnson/ I. Moore is the way forward, once Gazza gets to the pace of this Div. our attacking options will be superb. Taylor should only be used from the bench.

This game was lost well before kick-off in whatever mists were swirling around inside the tactical department of Stan's brain. It was only six days ago that the new Johnson/Moore partnership turned Preston's defence inside out with a brilliant display of incisive running and quick thinking. They then gave Bradford the same treatment for an hour on Wednesday. It was the best striking partnership I've seen in Burnley shirts since.......well, you tell me, I can't remember the last time I was so impressed. After three months of unrelenting dross we looked like a football team again, until kick off yesterday.

With Taylor restored to the team it was back to Walsall and an endless succession of high balls pumped up front. Moore, withdrawn on the right, hardly touched the ball in the first half while Johnson was peripheral, reduced to trying to anticipate where Taylor, should he win a header, would direct it. Not for the first time in the last three months Stan had made it easy for the opposition, it was as though last Sunday had never happened.

I really cannot explain why Stan chose to ditch the lethal Moore/Johnson partnership so soon, it was another in a long line of bizarre decisions Stan has made since December.  What on earth is the matter with him ????

I wouldn't criticise any of the players for this shambles. Certainly not Taylor, who did his best with the service he received and did, more or less, what his manager asked him to do. All of them, except one, played with a lack of conviction and confidence which suggested I wasn't the only one thinking that the way they were being required to play just wasn't going to work. The exception was Kevin Ball who was inspired in the second half and held the defence together when it looked on the verge of total collapse on many occasions.

A thoroughly depressing performance, this team has proved it's capable of playing superb football, but for some reason that escapes me, the manager won't let them.

Just out of interest I watched to see whether Stan would acknowledge Osama after the game. I was a bit surprised to see Stan go over to him, shake his hand and then pat him on the cheek. It all looked very friendly, but appearances can be deceptive, we looked a play off team last Sunday.

Keith.

Chris Waddle and Carlton Palmer perhaps ?

This will create a lot of interesting selection problems for Stan as to whether to slot Gazza in to the existing structure or re-shape the line-up to accommodate him. This would be no problem if they hadn’t won on Sunday. However as the man himself has stated Gazza might not get selected as the boys did exceptionally well in the first half. When we were two nil up, we actually needed a Gazza on the park to maintain a grip of the game rather than let Preston take over. In the light of this I wonder if Stan may well not bench him until the second half, plus he rarely changes a winning team.

What does everyone reckon?

After watching Little, Blake and Alan Moore toying around with Preston's defenders in the last 10 minutes on Sunday I can't wait to see Gazza join that trio. Can any team in this Division put out four better footballers ? I don't think Gazza will start, I've never known Stan drop players from a winning team and surely Little will replace Weller.  On radio yesterday all Stan would say was 'he'll be in the squad and will play some part in the game'.  Unless there are more injury problems I'd expect to see him on the bench.

Well there was one ticket free about an hour ago - after 2 attempts

Is everyone else as excited as me about seeing the Lord of English football play for us tonight?  Is it really true, Gazza, Paul Gascoigne plays for Burnley....tonight?  WOW.

I'm sure come tomorrow I'll feel deflated, I've been a Claret for long enough to know that things don't ever turn out like the movies, but we can hope.

It will be more than Bertie Bee buzzing at Turf Moor tonight as it’s the Bandwaggoners Big Nite out in the hope of seeing the Mars bar kid make his Turf Moor debut.

Initially I thought this was a great move and then I had my doubts seeing him play for Everton. After Sunday night when just his presence lit the place up, iI still  feel ambivalent as to whether it’s a move that’s going to work. Gazza thrives on being the centre of attention although his press conference suggested a certain weariness with the goldfish bowl existence he has created for himself.

On the other hand Waddle made some good points about Gazza in that he was played in a deep anchor role at Everton a la Kevin Ball, when his best position is forward behind the strikers. Stan is probably a shrewder manager that Walter Smith, well who isn't?

This will create a lot of interesting selection problems for Stan as to whether to slot Gazza in to the existing structure or re-shape the line-up to accommodate him. This would be no problem if they hadn’t won on Sunday. However as the man himself has stated Gazza might not get selected as the boys did exceptionally well in the first half. When we were two nil up, we actually needed a Gazza on the park to maintain a grip of the game rather than let Preston take over. In the light of this I wonder if Stan may well not bench him until the second half, plus he rarely changes a winning team.

What does everyone reckon?

Hopefully his presence on the pitch will get that extra 10% from the rest of the players who will raise their game in deference to Gazza. From the opposition point of view this is excellent news as well as McCall’s words below indicate. Whilst they are all plotting to stop Gazza they may take their eye of the rest of them, and this is perfect for the likes of Johnson, Alan Moore and Glen as McCall has suggested that these three are merely “hard working players”.  The inference would appear to be that they are not on £40k a week like former team mate Carbone, they can’t be any good can they? The importance of "names" and reputations play a significant role in football and should never be under-estimated, it's not just a media concept. Although you would think Bradford would have learned their lesson.

Anyway lets not forget Bradford in all the hysteria, they will be out to upset the party tonight, but I believe the pace of Johnson up against the lumbering Molenaar and possibly returning from injury Weatherall will be too much for them. They have a loanee goalie and if he falls below the excellent standards set by Lucas on Sunday the Clarets potentially might go abundance tonight with or without Gazza starting as they are one of the softest sides in the Division at the back. With 19,000 raving Clarets surrounding him Mr Loanee goalie from Dundee United, where the crowds are bigger at Tesco's, might just cack his pants.

If you are going tonight enjoy the game, make loads of noise,  and the rest of us look forward to your feedback.

From a really famous newspaper, beginning with G.

Bradford skipper Stuart McCall believes Paul Gascoigne could provide Burnley with the inspiration to return to the top flight for the first time in 26 years.

McCall and Gascoigne are former Rangers team-mates, but will be on opposing sides for what will surely be one last time when Bradford face Burnley at Turf Moor.

The two players have a lot in common as they have both been influenced by Walter Smith at various stages in their careers, although it was the Scot's sacking as Everton boss last week which prompted Gascoigne to leave Goodison Park.

Gascoigne chose to join Burnley's push for promotion to the Premiership after being offered a deal until the end of the season.

McCall, who spent three years alongside Gascoigne at Ibrox from 1995-98, reckons it is a gamble by Gascoigne which has every chance of paying off for player and club.

"I'm disappointed he's with Burnley to be honest, because if Walter had still been at Everton then Paul would still be there and doing his bit to help Everton in their battle against relegation," said former Toffees star McCall.

"But it wasn't to be and this is now a fresh challenge for him. He has not played first-team football for a while, so it will probably take him two or three matches to get bedded in.

"But in tight games, which they're going to have between now and the end of the season, he can give them that bit of inspiration, or provide one killer pass, or unlock a defence with a clever piece of skill.

"Burnley are a team with a lot of hard-working players, but without an outstanding name - until now with Gazza. He certainly has the individual ability to fit in with the team work they possess."

Come  On  You  Clarets

From the City page of this mornings Mail :-

'Having poured nearly a billion pounds into the leaky bucket that is ITVDigital, there are indications that it's owners Granada and Carlton are ready to call it a day.
It is clear that it grossly overpaid for it's Nationwide football contract which has failed to attract the audiences, subscriptions or advertising that was hoped.
Many think the most likely outcome of the negotiations with the league is that the £315m contract will be abrogated. This will be a disaster for football'.

I wouldn't know how seriously this would harm the finances of Burnley FC and it's no consolation to know that every other Nationwide club would be similarly effected.
When the good ship 'SS.ITVDigital' finally begins to slip beneath the waves there will be a mad scramble for the lifeboats, but who will rescue them.......is that the good ship 'SS.Pheonix' steaming over the horizon ?

The only thing I saw was on the Sheffield Wednesday website (I think, can't
remeber what I was doing there) whcih said that he was playing with a broken
bone in his foot, I think Teamtalk mentioned it too but after watching him
on Sunday I'm not so sure. I've seen in a number of places that Forest are
willing to let him go for free but I'm not sure about this. WHen he was
Wednesday they wanted to extend his loan spell but Forest refused. Obviously
if they had him on loan they could afford his wages & so possibly Forest did
want something for him or he's demanding a big signing on fee. Interestingly
he's not on the squad list on the Forest site anymore!

Twas only cramp!!!
Worried me though.
For a small guy he certainly puts himself about.
Also if that is a striker with a broken foot I'd sure like to see him run when fully fit.

Is the rumour that forest would let him go for free true?
They must really be in the financial mire.

I was just reading that the away tickets for Burnley v Preston are £19 and
hence preston have returned about 2,000 tickets. Now I thought that away
ticket prices were meant to be the same as the equivalent home price for
similar facilities according to the football league rules. Can anyone
confirm this as I'd have thought that the East Stand would have been
equivalent and that's about £15.

Also, no-one seems to have mentioned that at the moment Johnson has a broken
bone in his foot meaning that he can't complete a full game unless he has a
pain killing injection which he described as being like playing with a
wellington boot on. Surely if we were just signing a striker to cover Taylor
for a few weeks we'd get a fully fit one. Is this possibly a hint that it
may be with view to a long term signing.

TURF MOOR CRACKERJACK

What a rip snorting thoroughly hooking game of football last night.

Approaching Burnley from Todmorden and ascending through those dark steep walled cliffs into glorious sunlight bathing the Brun  & Calder Valley, Pendle and the hills beyond I was feeling positively homesick even before I got down into those black stone houses huddling around Turf Moor and the Park View Chippy. Dramatic views and exquisitely lit landscapes were the prelude for a spectacular Turf Moor show exhibiting all the best elements of sport in its raw and passionate form.  Even outside the ground the crowd awash with claret and blue, there was a buzz of excitement and anticipation for this tasty looking derby with one of our oldest rivals Preston North End.

The stadium exploded into life with the introduction of Gazza to the crowd and this set the scene for all that followed. The usual puzzlement amongst the sages as to the wisdom of benching Little and leaving out Davis and Gnohere were soon dis-spelled once the Clarets started ripping into the North End defence spearheaded by the lightning pace of new signing David Johnson. After an early scare when PNE got a back post header on target following one of the many free kicks conceded in the area outside the box, the Clarets proceeded to shred the Preston back line.

The first goal came from an enormous punt from Mr Gloves which the defence failed to deal with. Harried by Johnson, the defender and goalie got in a tangle and the ball was cleared as far as the lurking Ian Moore who played a precise lob into the goal over the stranded Lucas. A well taken and well deserved goal as Ian Moore seemed to shed his recent lack of confidence in front of goal to slot this one in. Next it was Johnson’s turn, & after missing one good chance he stuck in his first goal for the Clarets after bursting clear of the defence and slotting home from an angle inside the box. The Clarets then had an abundance of opportunities to put the game beyond Preston’s reach but Johnson and Ian Moore were thwarted by some outstanding goalkeeping from the visiting custodian, Lucas.

So 2 – 0 up and looking very comfortable the Clarets trotted off at half time to a deserved ovation, the crowd having been given a pasting recently from various quarters. However with no-one to persecute, Branch and Taylor both being unavailable, they got behind their side from the off and together we delivered on and off the field. It was a joy to be part of a crowd wholeheartedly behind the players and in such vociferous form.

Plainly Preston couldn’t carry on like this otherwise the Clarets might be forced into making a declaration in the second half and they duly adjusted their play to restrict the Clarets chances and increase their own. In the first half Preston had defended very high up the pitch thus giving the Moores and Johnson lots of space to run into behind their back four. In the second half they defended much further back and I have Steve Tatt. to thank for pointing this tactical nuance out to me on the long journey back to Suffolk.

In the second half despite maintaining quite a bit of possession the Clarets had fewer chances whilst Marlon was called on to make two amazing point blank saves plus a

couple of merely outstandingly good ones. Stan, sign him now before someone else does.

In the end Preston did pull one back and deservedly so as through the tricky Healey, and Etuhu, Preston had created plenty of hairy moments for the Clarets defence. The Clarets had lost their grip on the game for a while as Little failed to make any impact when replacing Weller and we lost control of the middle until the arrival of Blake five minutes from time, who managed to bring Glen into play more which restored some much needed composure to the whole team. Prior to Blakes arrival the ball was needlessly given away too often and possession returned to the opposition too quickly.

At the back Coxy and Mitch held pretty firm and as usual we got one or two gaffs from Mitchell but that’s because he gets involved and doesn’t duck out. Despite being under siege for what seemed like ages they held pretty firm and Marlon dug them out when Preston did manage to get the better of them.

So a fantastic result and an absolutely storming game of footy which we narrowly won in the end. Nonetheless we might have delivered a K.O. blow to Preston and in their managerless state they could now falter in the same way that Millwall, Norwich and Palace appear to be doing at the moment.

However lets not underestimate Preston’s contribution to this great game of football and lets hope they appoint a sensible manager and stay in the top half of this division if not the play off zone. Like us they are one of the great Lancashire town clubs that are the bedrock of football.

 MEANWHILE............

Strange things happen at this time of the year, Millwall losing at home to Sheffield, and perhaps the biggest shock of the day was Grimsby beating Wolves. Meanwhile down below, Wimbledon are quietly putting in a tremendous run and since he listed half the squad hard man Vialli has got some more mileage out his underperforming Watford players. A nice 3 – 0 spanking of Coventry must have boosted the intake of cappuccino & sales of Amaretto on the stradas of Hertfordshire.

However lets not get carried away, all this triumphalism will be wasted if we don’t put asunder lowly Bradford who will no doubt be keen to upset the Gazzamania applecart on Wednesday. Nonetheless lets go forward confidently. In Johnson we have the pace up front we have been lacking and Gazza might provide that control in midfield we have been lacking. We look sound at the back with Mitchell back in harness and we won a game against top notch opposition without Glen for the most part. Three points against Bradford and we can cruise home a point a game if necessary which might relax the boys enough to really go for Wolves when they come to town on Easter Saturday who must now be looking over their shoulders at the Baggies very nervously.

Seven more crackers to go, lets enjoy these moments while we can.

COYC

Igor
