John
Why would I want to eat my post?
Sure I gave Sven some stick for the performance against Sweden and
quite rightly so.
Many other people have given the team and manager stick as well
including the players themselves regarding their own performance.
I admit to going over the top on Eriksson, but how many others
thought we would stuff the Argies so convincingly, not many methinks.
I also seriously under estimated the quality of our two full backs
Mills and Ashley Cole who I think have been two of our best players
and in a short spell in the tournament have come of age as
International footballers. Both did brilliant jobs defensively on
Ortega and Gonzalez.
However on the other hand Svan has shifted Heskey back to his
rightful place up front where I think he has played really well,
despite all the criticism received from such plonkers as Chris Waddle
in particular. Why the manager of Worksop Town is employed as a
pundit Lord only knows. Vassell has been dumped despite many others
raving on about his performance in the opening game and Michael Owen
has come good at the right moments. The midfield is now the United
trio as I suggested in my post playing in a block with Sinclair out
wide.
None of the list of younger players listed in my last post, apart
from Cole is now anywhere near the side, and I thought that Dyer did
very little when he came on at 3 - 0 up. Sheringham and Fowler are
now the cover for Owen and Heskey, not Vassell, who I really like,
but at serious International level is a fish out of water.
Sven has been a lucky manager, he got away with several mistakes
against Sweden and scraped a point from a poor performance. He
stumbled across the right formation in midfield against the Argies
because Hargreaves got injured and Sinclair came on. Sinclair was
only in the squad because Danny Murphy got injured. Sinclair is also
a seasoned Prem pro rather than an under 21 who Sven up to now seems
to have favoured by default.
The Nigeria game was a non event. Expect the Nigerians to play a
friendly in the UK not too long after the World Cup. Denmark kindly
donated at least two goals before half time.
However no doubt that Sven recovered rapidly to take the Argies and
got the tactical plan right. More inmportantly he has given the
England players an eerie and almost scary self belief that Kevin
Keegan could only dream about. Basically Denmark cacked themselves
and capitulated in the face of it.
Next up are Brazil. Sven is in a win win situation. If England do
win I promise to print out this e-mail and eat it provided I can soak
it in beer first. If England lose we know Brazil are a good side
anyway. For what its worth, it's the best defence vs the best attack
in the tournament. The parallels between this game and the group game
in 1970 are uncanny, except that back then both sides were able to
progress. My head says that England can win this game, but my heart
says they probably won't. What I do know is that this will be an
absolutely fantastic game and considering it took 30 years to come
about one I might never see again before I croak, and go to the Turf
Moor in the sky.
Finally whilst some of my last post may have been shown to have been
wildly off the mark, some was on the button. You win some you lose
some. However it least it was a post, an almost rare event on our
group lately.
Come on you Whites.
Igor
