When England took on Denmark in the 2002 World Cup Second Round on Saturday,
supporters of many Football League clubs tuned into the BBC's television
coverage as a protest against ITV and Carlton and Granada.
Burnleyfootballclub.com led the protest on Thursday and many Football League
clubs followed the lead on their official websites, resulting in a
monumental ratings victory for the BBC.
Out of an average audience of 15.8 million people, 12.4 million chose to
watch the game on the BBC, whilst ITV pulled in only 3.2 million, according
to soccerinvestor.com.
England's next game takes place on Friday morning, when they take on Brazil
in the quarter final.
The game kicks off at 7.30am and yet again, both the BBC and ITV will be
showing the game live.
Therefore, Burnley Football Club would like to ask all of the supporters to
tune into the BBC's coverage again and put more pressure on Carlton and
Granada, who still owe money to all of the 72 Football League clubs.
"It's all about putting pressure on ITV, Carlton and Granada to make them
face up to their responsibilities," said Clarets Chairman Barry Kilby.
"If the advertisers on ITV realise that more people are watching the BBC,
then it will be more pressure on them and on Carlton and Granada, which will
all help."
