COLUMBUS, Ohio – June 23, 2002 – Molly Holly won the WWE Women's
Championship for the first time tonight, but she didn't really feel
like celebrating.
"I'm feeling like I just got thrown into a huge drier, tumbled
around
for 10 minutes, pulled out and stomped on by a stampede of bison,"
Holly told WWE.com when asked about her physical condition. "Then I
feel like I fell down a flight of steps. But it could be worse."
She added with a chuckle, "I think I deserve a few weeks off. Just
kidding."
Molly explained that she got knocked silly by one of Trish Stratus'
kicks to the head, other bumps and bruises notwithstanding.
"It was action-packed and one of the toughest fights I've ever been
in," she said.
It ended with Molly pinning Trish to win her first title since her
brief reign as Hardcore Champion at WrestleMania X8. In fact, it the
first time that Molly is leaving an arena with a champion since she
was Women's Champion in WPWF, a tiny Hudson, Fla.-based promotion
that ran shows the first Saturday of every month. Competing
as "Starla Saxton," Molly said she won that title in front of 50
people. Tonight, she raised gold in front of somewhere between
15,000
and 20,000 people.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet," she said. "But it still feels pretty
darn good to work here."
With Jazz and Lita injured, it seems inevitable that the Trish-Molly
feud will continue, and Molly said that's just fine with her.
"Trish is by far one of my favorite people to compete against," she
said. "She challenges me. There's no one better to fight than the
top
good guy."
The win also means that Molly, as Women's Champion, will now be able
to appear on both RAW and SmackDown! Trish returns to RAW for now.
"When you're on only one show, there's a lot of old friends that you
never get to see," Molly said. "So I'm looking forward to seeing a
lot of my favorite co-workers on SmackDown!"
