Well, I agree. Glavine is just as valuable to the Braves as Johnson is to
the D'backs. But, the award has always gone to the pitcher with the best
pitcher. Its not like the MVP where value is a big factor.
Glavine has 18 wins, Johnson has 17. Johnson's ERA is 2.30. Glavine's is
3.69. Johnson has 288 K's. Glavine has 125. Walks are just about even.
Johnson has 210 IPs, Glavine has 200. Johnson has 8 CG, Glavine has 3.
Johnson has 3 shutouts, Glavine has 1.
Johnson may have a couple outings lately below his standards, but the one
thing he has done in those outings is not let the game get away. Much like
Glavine has done throughout the year. Plus, Johnson's last outing was a
shutout.
Glavine has a chance, but he's going to have to catch up quite a bit in the
stats. I'd like to make a stronger case for Glavine, but I can't.
Actually, I think Maddux has pitched better this season than Glavine. I'd
like to make a case for him too. Bad luck in the win department keeps him
out of contension. Writers like those wins.
