hehe, true. Being the highest paid player in baseball means nothing
anymore. It just means you were the last guy to sign a piece of paper.
Actually, it never really did mean that much. Heck, Ozzie Smith was the
highest paid player in the game for awhile...
As for Jeter, he signed a 1-year, $10 million extention. You can look at
2 ways: 1) The Boss is getting a year bargain. 2) Jeter's price will
probably have gone up by next season. The deal they talked about was 7
years, $118.5 million. You can argue the point of wheter or not any player
is worth that kind of money, but relative to what players of similar or
lesser talent will sign for in 2001, that may be "cheap."
It's funny, cuz the Yanks started a policy of signing their young players
to contracts because they had been burned by arbitration. What Jeter
wanted/would have gotten in arbitration? About $9.5 million.
Good plan George:)

Inflation? I don't know the figures, but at one point he was supposed
to get a long-term contract that would turn him into the highest paid
player....then again, seems like every free agent nowadays is becoming the
highest paid player.
