RE: Assenmacher

Well, they may be has-beens but look at what some of the has-beens the Reds
picked up last offsesaon did.

It doesn't hurt to give a couple guys a chance. Ok, Assenmacher is kind of
a long shot to make the team and he did have a huge ERA in '99, but he has a
career 3.54 ERA and only twice posted an ERA over 4.00 in the 90's. He
posted a 3.26 in '98, and a 2.94 in '97.

He has been a very consistent, very good lefty for 14 years and I think
giving him a chance is a worthwhile investment. Check out his stats
sometime. It's pretty amazing to see a relief pitcher with so few horrible
years on his record. He has never been a power pitcher and being a lefty
specialist makes the age factor less of an issue.

As for Bobby Bo, getting out of New York can't possibly hurt. If he's
healthy, he could add some punch to the bench, which is needed. He can play
both LF and RF, and that would be extreemly valuable if Lombard spends '00
in Richmond.

Yeah, ok, maybe both will continue their spin downward, but what if Colorado
hadn't taken a washed-up first baseman back in '93? 200 HRs and probably
about 700 RBI's later it looks like it's a good thing they took a chance.

Is it me or does it seem the Braves are picking up people standing under
the Interstate bridges with "Will Play For Food" signs?

Guess the Braves want to help him become #2 or even #1 or
better yet keep Bobby B company. They have little coming up in their
farm
system and at this rate they'll have less
