Taiping Hash: August 22
Following July's summer Death March in Huzhou, the hares for August have decided
to bring us back to the familiar, gentle mountains of Lingyan, located to the
south of Suzhou.
The Tourism Brochure says it best:
Lingyan Mountain Scenery Area is located at the foot of the Lingyan Mountain
which is always praised as "its beautiful scenery exceeding the others in the
South of Yangtze River". Lingyan Mountain , presents the stereoscopic history of
the Wu and Yue States of the Spring and the Autumn Period, with simple and
unsophisticated nature landscape. Lingyan Mountain ¡¯s long history
civilization, elegant gardens and well- known legends make it the most valuable
place of interest for the people in modern times, who are eager to enjoy
relaxation and luxury, developing their interests and appreciation. Let¡¯s
approach Lingyan Mountain, stepping into these private gardens with a history of
hundreds of years and tasting the classical elegance and leisure in our memory.
Even though we are still the Summer Period, and not the Spring and Autumn
Period, Lingyan Mountain still promises a spectacular location for a run.
The hares promise a vertical climb of sufficient challenge, in addition to
scenic rural trails that will expose the runners to tea plantations, secluded
farms, occasional shiggy, inspiring temples, resting areas for the dead, fences
with locked gates, and traditional Lingyan architecture.
FRB's should finish in less than 75 minutes.
This finish is at secluded valley with a lake, which is ideal for refreshing
August swims. Thirsts may be quenched with plenty of ICE COLD BEERS.
The hares allege that the run site is only a 90-minute ride from the Grassy
Knoll.

Taiping Hash, July 18
Like a thoroughbred sprinting down the final stretch, the Taiping Hash finishes
its own Triple Crown this month.
In May, the hares set a trail through the bamboo in beautiful Dongmingshan,
Hangzhou. June was scenic Dongshan in Suzhou.
The third and final stage of the Taiping Triple Crown is this month with the
first Taiping run ever in Huzhou.
The setting is in the village of Daochang, which is near the country city of
Huzhou and the south bank of Taihu Lake. The local tourist officials describe
the area as follows:
In order to make full use of the unique natural landscape and humanistic
resource in Daochang village, the project will be developed in combination with
historic interests like Ancient Plum Flower Mountain Villa, Wanshou
Temple,Huyuan Tomb, ancient ruins of Xiagu City, and etc. The area will also
character as ¡°having lunch in farmhouse, living in farmhouse, traveling in
countryside, and enjoying farmer¡¯s happiness¡±, composed sightseeing and tour
with
appreciating rural flavor, experiencing farming civilization and enriching
life.Daochang will be built into a cultural tourist area consisting of rural
cultureand landscape culture.
Plus, in what will surely make our German and Dutch hashers feel at
home,Daocheng village boosters claim that ¡°the Rhine River of China flows along
the village¡±.
Camel and Stiffy are able to introduce the virgin trails of Daochen thanks to
the never ending expansion of China¡¯s freeway network. A ribbon of concrete now
extends from the Grassy Knoll on the A-9 far across the countryside to open up
access to the closest mountains to Shanghai. You¡¯ll be on trail in record time,
less than two hours from Hongqiao! (editor¡¯s note: maybe).
The hares promise an exhilarating one hour trail for walkers and a pleasant 80
minute trail for those who want more mountain for their money.
As for last month, hares, Johnny Wad and OJ promised the run of the year. By
most accounts they quite possibly achieved this. Their trail of tears up and
down sacred Dongshan had the pack gasping for breath while taking in stunning
views. All felt exhilarated with the accomplishment of getting up the
mountain, except when being passed by super-human 80 year old women carting 120
kg loads of freshly picked ¡°red fruit.¡± The whole trail was laid with an
environmentally apportioned 500 grams of flour and one stick of chalk stolen
from a five-year old girl who fell off a ladder while gathering fruit. Luckily
the chalk did not break.
Finally the pack was treated to a beautiful lightening storm over Taihu Lake
followed by a thunderous downpour from the heavens. Three members of the pack
decided to stay on the mountain for optimal viewing and a more electrifying
experience.

Taiping Hash, June 20
We are all aware of China's five sacred mountains: Hua Shan, Tai Shan, Heng Shan
(Hu Nan), Heng Shang (Shan Xi) and Song Shan.
Now, prepare yourself for an even more sacred experience: Dong Shan.
In what promises to be the best Taiping run ever since last month's epic run
near Hangzhou, the hares take us near Suzhou and Taihu Lake for more than ever
could be described in words.
But we will try.
Shady, conifer lined mountain trails, simultaneous spectacular views of both
mountains and sea, verdant tea plantations, and ancient Ming dynasty village
structures are only some of the spectacular sights available. The lofty peaks,
deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, enchanting rocks and the centuries-old
pines and cypresses will undoubtedly encourage you to linger with no thought of
leaving.
After sating your spirit with the spectacular sensory experience that is Dong
Shan, you will then be invited to quench your thirst and extinguish your hunger
with what will inevitably go down in hash history as the best circle and bash
since May 2009.
The hares have noted: ¡°Do not even think about how great this run will be, it
will merely hurt your head.¡±
Warning: In an effort not to disturb the natural beauty of the trail, the hares
did not remove shiggy from the trails. Thus, if you are concerned about the
pristine condition of your legs, you might want to wear long trousers.
The hares claim that the long run will be 70 minutes for frbs. There is a short
split for those more interested in a leisurely walk to take in the stunning
scenery.

mountains ... up and down ... more mountains ... most horrible experience I've

Taiping Hash, February 21
Massive cost cutting hits the Taiping Hash this month as we slash
bus expenses with a run in nearby Waigaoqiao, which is in northern
Pudong at the confluence of the Huangpu and Yangtze rivers and the
ocean.
We have found virgin trails within beautifully kept countryside,
farmland and a nature reserve. There is a massive green belt of
replanted second generation forest and abundant opportunities for

Taiping Hash / Full Moon Hash--December 5
Now hash away! Hash away! Hash away all!
Twas the 20th night before Christmas, and again, the Taiping Hash
and the Full Moon Hash are stirring in Puxi.
Three not-so-wise men will be in charge of setting this joint run.
They have promised to rely only on the stars to set the trail and
lead the pack safely home.
The post-run meal will be a traditional Irish Christmas feast of
Sichuan fare.
The run will be A-A, so if you are too big to fit down the chimney,
you can just get an early start on a few holiday drinks.
As we have done in the past, we will be collecting clothes at the
run for donation to the River of Hearts charity. Here is their
website: http://riverofhearts.org/cms/
The essential details:
When: Friday, December 5. 7:30 p.m. hares set off; 7:45 p.m., pack
follows.
Where: A restaurant called Ba Guo Bu Yi (°Í¹ú²¼ÒÂ) 1018 Ding Xi Lu

east on Yanan Lu until you get to Ding Xi Lu. Turn left heading
north on Ding Xi Lu and the restaurant is about 150 m up the street
on the right with an ornate wooden doorway. If you plan to take a
taxi ask the driver to take you to Yanan Lu & Ding Xi Lu and then
north on Ding Xi Lu to the restaurant.
Hares: Math Factor, B. Cracker, Duchess
Standard Disclaimer: As always on the Taiping Hash / Full Moon Hash,
this will be a live run of adequate distance.
Taiping Hash: November 15, More Details
The Taiping Hash returns to the Taihu Lake Scenic Mountain area for
our 100th run.
The hares report:
¡§Starting on the tranquil shores of Taihu Lake, a spectacular run
through rolling hills of orange groves. Oranges, one of Taihu's
indigenous products, have been cultivated here for nearly 5,000
years.
The tourist brochures reads "Autumn is the orange harvest season, as
the fruits radiate delightful color, are easily peeled with intense
flavor, juicy and fragrant."
The scenery will gradually change as hashers ascend into the park.
Following rocky dirt farm paths into dense natural beauty, one will
only see flowers, trees and courtyards, briefly losing sight of
Taihu Lake. As the run progresses, the hares plan to challenge the
pack with cleaver checks in the world famous Longlin Tea
plantations. The trail will twist and roll through pine forests and
high stone rock formations, with Taihu Lake suddenly jumping into
sight. The run will end in a secluded spot surrounded by natural
scenery, supplemented with gardens and pagodas.
To quote one local on hiking in the area "Leisurely wandering around
the area, you are fresh-minded, more elegant, somewhat unearthly,
healthy and youthful as well. A walk in the mountains will surely
bring you great joy."
The run site is allegedly only 90 minutes from the Grassy Knoll.
Note: The bus times have been moved up 30 minutes earlier from the
past few runs.
The Details:
Date: Saturday, November 15
Location: Dongshan, Taihu, Lake, near Suzhou in Jiangsu province.
Hares: Shagga, Ban the Cock
Trail Consultants: Camel, Puss Eye (the consultants, who played
vital roles in finding the trail, have requested that they shall not
be counted as hares, and thus not be required to drink with the
hares in the circle.)
Hare Chauffeur: Double Dutch Mountain
Bash: Seafood Bash with plenty of ICE COLD BEER
Time: We estimate the run will start by 1:00 p.m. We plan to start
the bash by 5 p.m., leave by 7 p.m., and be back in Shanghai by 10
p.m. Of course, actual results will vary.

Taiping Hash: November 15¡X100th Run
After carefully counting the number of runs since the birth of the
Taiping Hash seven, eight or nine years ago, the Taiping Hash has
reached the magical mark of the 100th run.
The 100th run will held be at beautiful mountain somewhere in Jiangsu
or Zhejiang provinces. Virgin trails, entertaining circle, cold beer,
and the type of food one always expects from a Taiping bash.
The 100th Run Committee is furiously sorting out the logistics of the
run, so the details can't be fully disclosed at this point. The cost
will still be the cheap RMB 200 though.
Please respond if you wish to go ...... and please include your name.
We will limit the run to two buses.
Italian hares, Italian fashion, Italian taste. October brings
something completely different.
With at least 5 Italian hares setting this run, most of hashers are likely to find their way back to the finish in the mountains near Cixi, Zhejiang province. The run site is close to Ningbo and is in the same area that the Taiping Hash visited in July.
It is another chance to appreciate the endless mud flats as we cross the 36-kilometer long Hangzhou Bay Bridge to get to the run.
The hares report that the trail includes views of lakes and verdant hills with bamboo forests and waterfalls. The long run is about 90 for front runners. There will be a short run.
More importantly, the restaurant review: "It's a nice place in the forest. The building is wood and the food is great! (We tested the menu!) ? The place reminds us of Palladio, but food is local Zhejiang and it is somewhat cheaper. The interior is brighter though."
The Details:
Date: Saturday,
October 11
Location: Cixi, Zhejiang, the birthplace of Chinese porcelain.
Hares: For the long run, Daniele Fox & Fabrizio Ferrari. For the short run, Matteo Gasparetto, Sabina, and a German who pretends to be Italian.
Bash: The best the Italians could arrange.

Taiping Hash, August 23
The Taiping Hash ventures this month to a scenic mountain somewhere
near Suzhou.
There will be magnificent views of Tai Hu lake, with shrimp farm nets
blowing wistfully in the cool breeze and the masts of myriads of
concrete river boats glistening in the August sunshine, await those
who venture the short trip to Guang Fu. There'll be monastic havens
of idyllic quiet, hill top houses with lakeside vista, large ancient
pots filled with poo and some dense shiggy you could shave you legs
with all along the way.
The hares promise a short and long split; a choice of beautiful
trails with a maximum length of 11-12k on the long run. Circle up
lakeside to enjoy the shore breeze, some Guang Fu fighting (a bit
like Kong Fu fighting but with words) and then soak a camera or two
as we take a dip in the lake. The bash is in a palatial restaurant,
the top dining experience in Guang Fu, that will be serving huge
mounds of succulent local delicacies and copious quantities of ICE
COLD Snow beer.

Taiping Hash, July 12
Excellent trails, stunning views, exotic boat excursions, and a
chance to experience the birthplace of Chinese porcelain in lovely
Shanglin Lake, Zhejiang province.
That is what the July Taiping Hash offers with a run starting near
the town of Cixi, which is near the town of Ningbo, which is across
the across Hangzhou Bay from Shanghai.
After arriving by first class coach, the group will sail by private
junk to the remote run start, located near protective kiln remains
that date back to the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties.
The run site was just nominated as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Look
here: whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5331/
Naturally an A to B run, the hares will take us along virgin trails
through the Kaolao Mountains, where the hillsides are now ripe with
the infamous Waxberry fruit of Cixi. Bring along wicker baskets and
pick juicy Waxberry's for the pre-circle party.
Easy access to this remote location was not possible until the recent
opening of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the 36-kilometer long sea bridge,
which is the world's longest. The run start is now only 2 hours from
busy Shanghai.
Don't miss this opportunity to experience the Taiping Hash's first
run in Cixi, Zhejiang province.
The bash place will serve traditional Cixi food and plenty of ICE
COLD BEER.
Please respond if you wish to go. And please include your name.
The Details:
