Hi Everyone! So, I had a chance this morning to go and check out the Paskenta course.......just to see what it looked like after all the rain. I don't know what it will look like on Sunday morning, but the weather folks are predicting rain all night Saturday night......and letting up on Sunday morning. However, as of today, here's what it looks like: Pretty good!

Here are a few notes: There is a small spot of standing water on Meridian Road about half-way to Lassen Road. It's not deep at all, not long at all, you can just ride right through it - but it was a big puddle. Rowles Road is no longer flooded - it looked great. However, there is some standing water by the side of the road.......nothing too serious though. When I hit Corning, it was foggy. The fog wasn't thick and most of it was overhead - but it was definitely cooler temps and visibility dropped just a tad. The road to Paskenta was beautiful - just amazing scenery out that way. The Dirt Section - This section can be described in one word - Slick!! The dirt sections of the road are wet, but not deep mud or anything like that.........it's just a bit slippery. The gravel was good - and would probably help with traction problems on that road. Dust, obviously, was non-existent. After the dirt section, the road is quite rough, with some new potholes out there(filled with water from the rains). So, just be careful. In addition, I saw at least two loose cows on the side of the road about a mile past the dirt section, so keep your eyes open for those guys. River Road and West Sac, as of this morning, are both open and clear of water. However, there were some slick sections on West Sac - wet leaves and such - just as you get on to that road. I don't know what those roads will look like the morning of the ride, but there is a chance they could be flooded. As of now, they are not. The finish line looked great as always.

Overall, the course looked pretty good. Just some potholes and some slick dirt to watch out for.....and the cows! The Paskenta section of the course(between Corning and Orland) were very very quiet - almost no cars - and great scenery. Should make for a good riding day.

Good luck out there and stay safe!!! I will see you on Sunday morning at One Mile at 8:00AM for the start - and will have some maps to hand out if you need them.

Fundraising Ride for Ed McLaughlin – local bike advocate and Chico Velo Director
– Slated for February 23

Chico, CA — On December 21st, Ed McLaughlin – General Manager of Chico Velo
Cycling Club and Northern California bicycle advocate – was riding on a bike
path with other riders when he hit a bollard -- a metal post set in the middle
of a bike path to prevent cars from driving on the path.

McLaughlin was thrown over the handlebars and landed on his neck, causing a
severe injury to his spinal cord. He was airlifted to a specialized medical
center in Santa Clara, and has recovered enough to enjoy limited use of one of
his arms.

Support for the community's best-known cycling advocate has been overwhelming,
and to help raise money for the Chico Cyclist's Care Fund -- used to help
cyclists who sustain injuries while bicycling – Chico Velo is organizing the
Tour de Ed.

Slated for Saturday, February 23, 2008, the Tour de Ed, Ed McLaughlin’s Almond
Blossom Ride will take riders on one of two routes:
l A casual 6 mile loop through Lower Bidwell Park (perfect for families,)
l A 20 mile ride to Durham and back on quiet country roads when the
almond orchards are in full bloom. There will be a rest stop in Durham.

The ride will start at the Chico City Hall parking lot at 10am, with
registration opening at 7am. The entry fee will be $25 and all proceeds will go
to the Chico Cyclist’s Care Fund. All riders will receive a free t-shirt and
commemorative wrist band.

History of Advocacy and Success
During McLaughlin’s 20 plus year reign, Chico Velo has accomplished many major
milestones. A few of the awards Chico was earned include:
Best Bike Town – 1997, Bicycling! Magazine
Bicycle Friendly Community, Bronze Award – 2004, League of American Bicyclists
Wildflower Century – Top Ten Century, Bicycling! Magazine

Chico Velo currently hosts four annual century rides (100 miles in one day) and
two overnight tours, and brings riders from all over Northern California, Nevada
and Oregon to participate in them.

The largest of them is the well-known Wildflower Century, which is held in late
April and attracts 4000 riders to Chico for the weekend. The Wildflower Century
starts and finishes at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds – the only facility in the
area large enough to handle the event.
Chico Velo Cycling Club was formed in 1980 and serves the interest of bicyclists
in the Butte County area through education and advocacy. Membership to the club
is $10 a year.

Hi All - Hey, just a reminder about the Paskenta Century this weekend. The ride will start from the One Mile at 8:00AM on Sunday, February 3rd - Super Bowl Sunday. I will be there at the start with copies of the route map for those that do not have them. Please come prepared - bringing whatever items you think you may need out on the road/dirt(tubes, patch kit, pump, food, etc.). And, again, support/follow vehicles are STRONGLY discouraged this time around - the CHP can and will pull support vehicles over, so please - if you need a feed or anything, try to have someone hand off to you at the Paskenta store(no longer in business since it burned down) or another quiet place along the course. Last year, Chico Velo had to take this ride off of the calendar due to the many complaints we received from the CHP - primarily about follow vehicles. Have a great ride out there - and be safe!!

From Ivan Garcia at Butte County Association of Governments concerning our local bike map:

BCAG staff presented the draft Chico Area Bike Map to the BCAG Board of Directors this morning.  The following links will take you to our website if anybody wants to review and or comment.  Over the next month, staff will address gap closures connecting the various bike routes.  You may want to distribute the link to the Bicycle Advisory Committee and other interested individuals or groups for review and comment.

I would appreciate the Bicycle Advisory Committee assistance on identifying key points of interest to be included in the index.  I will track down key safety information / rider tips / helmet safety etc., information that may also be included.

BCAG’s What’s New Web Page:  http://www.bcag.org/__whats_new/index.html

FRONT SIDE of MAP:  http://www.bcag.org/__whats_new/documents/Chico_Bike_Map/CHICO_FRONT.pdf

BACK SIDE of MAP: http://www.bcag.org/__whats_new/documents/Chico_Bike_Map/CHICO_BACK.pdf

I can present the status of the map at the next Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting.  All comments should be directed to my attention by February 8, 2008.  BCAG placed an announcement in the local newspaper requesting comments by this date.

Once this project is complete, all files will be made available should the City or any other group want to expand the scope of this project.  All GIS layers will be made available in hopes the City will post on their website with the ability to turn on and off various layers to suite their individual needs. We will pursue this option with you in more detail.

If you have any questions please give me a call or send me an email.

Thank you.

Subject: Wilder Drive off Santos Ranch Road - Chico

At approx 7:30 pm last night ( 1/16/08) a very large group of Mtn. Bikers severely damaged a rock wall to bypass the gate onto Wilder Drive off Santos Ranch Road, where they almost hit an oncoming car,  they then proceeded to trespass onto private property to reach Old Humboldt Rd where they were met by a police squad car.

This behaviour is unacceptable. This is a private Rd that is very clearly marked as such. Not only did this group trespass onto private property but they also damaged private property.

We have had "encounters" with bikers on Wilder Dr. who claim to have permission from the owner - let me make this very clear: theyDO NOT.

Do to the property damage, we will no longer warn riders, and will instead call the police immediatly. You can thank the riders from last night for this.

It is unfortunate it has come to this, but obviously the "No Trespassing" signs, the large gate and the sign that says "No bicycles beyond this point" are being completely ignored. These signs were posted for a reason, this is a steep road that has blind corners, cattle and a lot of cars - not to mention, it is privately owned; not a publicly maintained Road.

Thank you.

Dear members of Chico Mtb Bikers,

Grettings from Adventure Racing Costa Rica! We would like you to
present our 2008 agenda, including the 8th edition of our Coast to
Coast Challenge, to be held this coming April.
The 2008 adventure racing season in Costa Rica is set to go. This is
our 10th season organizing races and we are excited about the events
we have planned. Here is the schedule for 2008:

1. The Coast to Coast Challenge (5 day expedition race – April
20 - 26)
2. The Pacuare Adventure Race (3 day stage race – August 8, 9 &
10)
3. La Soledad Team MTB Race (1 day race – October 4)
4. 24 Hours of Costa Rica (Expedition race – December 6 & 7)

For each of these events we have designed itineraries for
international teams. You just have to show up at the airport ready
to race and we will take care of the rest.
The first Race will be the 8th Edition of The Coast to Coast
Challenge which will start on the Caribbean Coast at 10am on April
20th 2008. Teams will bike, hike, climb and paddle across Costa Rica
through tropical rain and cloud forest, up and over the continental
divide and along country roads passing typical Costa Rican villages.
Teams will have 142 hours (almost 6 days) to complete the 500+ km
route across Costa Rica. The winning team is expected to finish in
just under 4 days.
The Pacuare Adventure Race and the 24 hours of Costa Rica being much
shorter races may be more attractive to those teams with a busy
schedule. Both these races offer a tough PRO route and a more
accessible SPORT route for teams that are just starting in the sport
of Adventure Racing.

The La Soledad Team MTB race celebrates its 10th edition this year.
We have put together a fun 9 day adventure trip that includes
whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, hiking and soaking in hot
springs at the Arenal Volcano and relaxing before the big day on the
palm fringed beaches of the Pacific Coast. The numerous mountain bike
rides incorporated into this trip also enable you to experience Costa
Rica up close while preparing for the Race.

The itineraries surrounding the Races are our suggestions to give
teams a chance to see some of this beautiful country. However, we
are always willing to adapt these if there are specific places you
would like to visit or for families with children coming in support
of the team. Coast to Coast Adventures is a full service travel
agency so organizing a trip for family and friends or adding a few
days on the beach after the race are all possibilities.

For more info on these races and the packages that we offer visit our
website www.adventureracingcostarica.com

The 2nd Annual

CUTTY TRAINING SERIES

ROUND 2

"TUNNELS"

CHICO-HWY 70 TUNNELS-CHICO ~ 80 miles

Saturday, January 12th 2008 9:00 AM One Mile Recreation Area

Tunnels… straight up. Test your winter fitness with this Team Chico favorite in to the beautiful Feather River Canyon and to the Hwy 70 Tunnels. A straight out and back heading out Chico-Oro, Durham Pentz, then up Hwy 70 over Yankee Hill and down into the canyon, past Pulga and along the North Fork Feather to the SECOND set of tunnels. All riders in the lead group will tough it out for the first KOM sprint by taking the steep detour up Lunt Rd. near the end of the first climb, then connect back to Hwy 70 and continue towards the tunnels. Sprint #2 will be at the end of the last, long tunnel and the turnaround. Back out of the canyon, down to the valley and finish with a final sprint on Chico-Oro just before the bike path.

Notes: These rides are organized for fun(?) and are open to all who are willing to try. This is an out and back ride and people can ride at their own pace and regroup as the leaders are heading back. Come on out and try to make it to the tunnels!! We will try to have a support vehicle(s) but please come prepared, ride with a partner and have a plan to get home. Please dress WARM and bring plenty of food, water and supplies and take responsibility for yourselves. We will have ride cards with the route, but there will be minimal course markings, no road closures, aid stations or coffee stops, just dogs, squirrels, pickup trucks, and a bunch of bikers on a sweet ride in the cuts! For more info contact Aren at arentimmel@... or (530) 892-9868.

Registration is open for many of the 2008 Doubles already including Butterfield, Solvang Spring, Mulholland, and the Devil Mountain Double.  The 2008 Death Valley Spring Double sold out in 10 Hours so you should subscribe to the newsletter at
http://www.adventurecorps.com/lists.html  to learn about registering for the 2008 Death Valley Fall Double and watch the calendar at http://www.adventurecorps.com/news/calendar.html

In 1959, Eisenhower was President, 10-speed bicycles were virtually unknown, Greg LeMond wasn't even born yet, and the Los Angeles Wheelmen began holding an annual Double Century -- the "Grand Tour".  This is the original Double in the U.S. and also includes 300 and 400 mile options -- all of which count towards the California Triple Crown.  The Grand Tour will be celebrating it's 50th Year as an annual Double Century in 2008 and many special activities are being planned which you won't want to miss!!

Each of the California Triple Crown Double Centuries is a Major Adventure in itself!!

Over the years, we have spoken to many cyclists who picked a tougher Double Century as their first.  In many cases, they weren't able to complete it because of mechanical, biomechanical, or mental problems.  We are convinced that these cyclists could have completed one of the flatter Doubles with a great sense of accomplishment.  They could have found that riding Doubles is challenging but also fun!!

Not a single one of these rides is easy.  Each will provide you with a "Personal Growth Experience".  Don't make the mistake of moving into the tougher Doubles until you're ready - mechanically, biomechanically, and mentally!!

Once you successfully complete three of the above Doubles, you are a Triple Crown Winner and have earned the right to have those ride names included on a custom printed Jersey or T-Shirt as well as buy lots of cool products at shown at

http://www.caltriplecrown.com/products.htm

Bicycling publications and club newsletter editors receive your name for print.  Your name is included on this Web Site!!  You become part of a group of select Bicyclists and have the tremendous satisfaction of completing one of the most difficult Bicycling events anywhere!!

The California Triple Crown is a small, completely volunteer organization established to publish the schedule and the results of these rides.

In order to receive California Triple Crown Credit for completing one of these Double Centuries, you must be on the Official Finisher's list for the 200 Miles as published by the Ride Organizer.

If you want these rides to continue, please bring your friends and families along and ask the ride organizer how they can help make the ride a success!!

If you want these rides to improve, volunteer and do your part to make them better!!

Those who say it can't be done are usually interrupted by others doing it!!

Accept The Challenge: Be A California Triple Crown Winner!!

*******************************

2.  2008 CALIFORNIA TRIPLE CROWN STAGE RACE ANNOUNCED

The 2008 California Triple Crown Stage Race will consist of the following Stages:

Stage 1: Mulholland Double Century on 4/12/08

Stage 2: Central Coast Double on 5/10/08

Stage 3: Terrible Two on 6/21/08

You don't have to do anything special to sign up for the Stage Race: In 2008, all you have to do is to sign up for and ride your heart out on the 3 Doubles in the Stage Race!!  Of course, that's much easier said than done!!  Also, if you ride any Stage on a tandem, you must ride all three Stages on a tandem with the same partner.

The California Triple Crown lays down this challenge: Be among the select few who are able to finish the Stage Race!!  Everyone who completes the 2008 Stage Race will be commended -- just to complete these three Extremely Difficult Rides is a MAJOR accomplishment!!

California Triple Crown Stage Race Plaques will be presented to the top 3 Men, top 3 Women, and top 3 Tandems at the California Triple Crown Awards Breakfast on 9/21/08, the day following the Knoxville Fall Classic Double in Vacaville, CA.

The California Triple Crown Stage Race rotates through 3 of the following 4 Doubles: Mulholland, Devil Mountain, Central Coast, and Terrible Two.  This rotation provides variety in the Stage Race from year to year, it allows Southern California cyclists to more easily participate in the Stage Race, and it is fair to all of the toughest Double Centuries in California.  For example, the Tour de France does not go over the same tough passes every year, and similarly, the California Triple Crown Stage Race doesn't go over the same tough passes every year either.

The California Triple Crown lays down this challenge: Be among the select few who are able to finish the Stage Race!!

Hi Everyone - This is just a reminder that you can check on Ed McLaughlin's progress in the hospital by visiting www.CarePages.com, and he is listed under "chicovelo" - one word, once you sign in. Also, we are trying to keep the Chico Velo website updated as often as possible with his condition here: http://www.chicovelo.org/ed.html . Ed has received tons and tons of support, letters, cards, e-mails, phone calls - it has been tremendous. Ed REALLY likes the support and friendship that you have all shown him - it really helps in his recovery. I would like to thank all of you so much for all of your help, and your thougths and prayers for Ed. You guys rock!!!

Have you considered riding Cycle Oregon 2008?? If so, please take
note.

This year the event takes place September 6-13, 2008.

The route announcement will take place January 31st and open
registration February 1st... with the expectation of 'filling up'
fast. I believe last year's registration was closed after 2 weeks!

If there is an interest in getting together to watch the Cycle
Oregon 2007 DVD and create an open 'forum' to ask / answer questions
about the event and how everything works, I would be willing to help
organize such a get together.

The location of a DVD viewing and discussion is dependent on the
number of folks interested... SO, with just 32 days before
registration, we need to act fast to share this information.

This was in today's Chico Enterprise-Record in the Letters to the Editor:

Letter: Senseless crime baffling
Chico Enterprise-Record

I wasn't in the paper and I wasn't in the news, because I was lucky.

On Wednesday, Dec. 5, I was riding my bicycle home from work at about 7 p.m., bundled up in three layers of clothing, heavy gloves and a helmet. I set my light to a flashing mode so cars would see me. I was westbound in the bike lane on West Sacramento Avenue just beyond Tony's Liquor when I heard a "crack" close behind me, then felt a burning sting below my left shoulder. A black car passed me by. It was about 7:20 p.m.

I knew I'd been shot with something but I wasn't knocked down. When I got home I found blood in my clothing and an open wound. At the Enloe emergency room we found holes through my shirt, hooded sweatshirt and jacket. Whatever hit me didn't lodge and must have shaken loose. The wound is still healing.

I was lucky. If I had been hit in the neck or head it might have been disastrous. This event has upset my family, made my children cry and shocked my friends. It feels important to share it. I am grateful to be whole and with my family this Christmas.

If anyone has any idea who may have done this, or what I was shot with, please contact the Chico Police Department. I am identified as a victim of a violent crime. I hope no one else becomes this person's victim.

— Tom Evans, Chico

Rodney, HI, I ma having trouble w/ the laptops so this will be quick.  Maybe forward it to all... I'm using a land computer in the rehab lab.

Ed is essentially unchanged, but for good news he gets a regular bed today.  Hopefully then he can be sat up a bit so he can see people, TV etc.  He has been staring at the cieling for 3 days.
He can still wiggle toes, but as the doc says, nothing useful.  Also no use of hands or ability to straighten his elbow...meaning he cannot "push".  They may start to let him eat tomorrow, but his guts are not moving well now either and they do not want to cause a bowel obstruction.

Please send this out to all...Thanks again for all the support.  Ed truely needs a Christmas miracle.  It is slowly becoming reality to him just how serious his disability is and will be.  It is very sad.  I will be thinking of everyone tonight at the Healing Service.  I may try to find a local church for service tonight.

Bye for now. More when I get my laptop issues resolved.  Suzanne

Local cyclist in serious condition after accident
By LAURA URSENY - Staff Writer

Local cyclist and Chico Velo director Ed McLaughlin is in serious condition after a bicycling accident on Friday.

McLaughlin was airlifted to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where he was listed in serious condition, according to the hospital on Saturday.

McLaughlin, 63, was riding through Bidwell Park with a group of cyclists in a tight pack when his bicycle struck a bollard.

He was thrown from the bike, and struck his head. He was wearing a helmet at the time. He was taken to Enloe Medical Center.

City Councilwoman and bike shop owner Ann Schwab was with McLaughlin at Enloe Friday afternoon. She told the Enterprise-Record Saturday that McLaughlin suffered from a severe spinal injury.

Schwab said McLaughlin was conscious on Friday, but in great pain. She said he had no feeling or movement from his chest down, or in his arms.

Schwab said the bollard McLaughlin hit was on the north side of Bidwell Park, between Petersen Drive and Madrone Avenue.

"I'm sure he's gone by there a million times and never had a problem," Schwab said.

Local real estate agent Leif Petersen was riding behind McLaughlin at the time of the accident.

"I heard him call out the (first) pole. You do that out of courtesy when you're riding together. Then he hit (a second one). I was right on his wheel, so I was trying to avoid colliding with him. I pulled off the road. I didn't see him fall. I just looked back and saw him on the ground."

An acquaintance, Petersen said the group of about 15 riders was going about 10 to 12 mph.

"He hit the pole dead-on. It sheared off his fork," which holds the front tire.

Petersen said a doctor participating on the ride tended to McLaughlin before the emergency personnel got there.

Schwab spoke with the physician who examined McLaughlin at the hospital and read the results of medical tests, including an MRI.

"The doctor reviewed the MRI results and found he had severe injury to the spinal cord," Schwab recalled of the doctor's conversation.

"If anyone can recover from this, it would be Ed," said Schwab.

His partner Suzanne Hanson is at the hospital with him, Schwab said.

A healing circle for Ed McLaughlin is planned at 8 p.m. Monday in City Plaza.

Friends and acquaintances are invited to gather for McLaughlin, who was injured in a bicycle accident on Friday.

People are asked to ride their bicycles to the downtown park.

Cards can be sent to Ed McLaughlin, c/o Customer Service Department, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, 751 South Bascom Ave., San Jose, CA 95128. Flowers are not recommended yet.

Friends, It is Sat. afternoon and I am at the hospital in Santa Clara.  Ed is in a special spinal Rehab unit.  He is sometimes quite alert, other times groggy/sleepy.  At this point he has zero to minimal use of legs and hands; he can move his arms a bit, left stronger than right.  I will stay here till Mon or Tues., then hopefully other friends can take turns maybe coming for a day or two on the days that I'm at work.  Monday the Social Services here opens and I can get a lot of the necessary paperwork started. My hunch is that her will be here for several weeks.  I also learned that there is a well respected Spinal Rehab unit in Palo Alto, and Ed does have some VA coverage.

I understand that Sandy Fisher is thinking of starting a foundation for fund raising.  Also Casey Merril of the Avenues Assn. may be arranging a gathering Christmas Eve in City Plaza.

I will do my best to respond to individual e-mails but right now, w/o a lap-top, it's hard.  The nice Physical therapy ladies are letting me use theirs.

I will try to write again tomorrow.  Keep Ed in your thoughts.  So far his attitude is pretty good and he thinks he will get better.  I hope that becomes the truth. Suzanne

From Suzanne:

Friends,  for those of you that have not heard yet, Ed was seriously injured today in a bike wreck in Bidwell Park.  He hit a pole/bollard, went over the handlebars and landed on his head.  He has a very serious spinal injury.  At this point he cannot use his legs.  He has been transfered to a hospital in Santa Clara / San Jose that specializes in this type of injury.  Most urgent is to keep his lungs active and him off a ventilator.

I will travel to Santa Clara Sat. AM.  I will do my best to keep Rodney at the bike club, Ann Schwabe and Tom Nickel up to date of stuff.  They will do their best to pass info on to all of Ed's friends.

Please keep Ed in your thoughts and prayers, Suzanne
