To promote BikeChico! Week, we (me if no one else joins me) will
table at the Farmers Market this Thursday 5 pm to 9 pm. Can anyone
join the fun and help promote bicycling for an hour or two tomorrow?
Thanks,

Subject: [chicobikeweek] From local cyclist, Greg Hollis.......

Hello-    My name is Greg Hollis, an active cyclist here in Chico.    I have an idea/suggestion for Bike Week, but I don't know if you  already have it as part of Bike Week.  I was trying to find out about  the upcoming Bike Week to see if the idea is already in use, but I  can't find anything other than what's being listed at the Chico Velo  Site.    So, I thought I would send in my idea anyway.    I assume the purpose of Bike Week is to encourage people to ride  their bikes to work, school, errands, etc.    There are
calculators on the internet that will tell you how much  carbon dioxide your car puts into the atmosphere.  One such  calculator is here:
http://www.terrapass.com/road/calcdetails.html.  I can't vouch for the accuracy on this site, and there are probably  better calculators, but this is the one I started with.    My idea is to encourage riders to track how many miles they ride  their bike to work, school, or for local errands, during Bike Week.  Enter those miles into the calculator to determine how many pounds of  carbon dioxide were *not* put into the air by using a bike instead of  a car.    Miles accumulated for "fun rides" (group rides, leisure rides, etc.)  should not be counted- only those rides that are usually done by  vehicle should count.    For example, if I use my truck for local errands and work, I  would have about 75 miles for the week.  I get about 15
miles per  gallon.  According to the calculator, by not using my truck for Bike  Week, I will prevent 98 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted  into the atmosphere.  5,096 pounds for the year, if I never used my  truck for work and local errands.    You can carry it further by considering the financial savings.  Let's  say that gas will be costing $4/gallon, and I use 5 gallons for the  week, I saved $20 by taking my bike.  If I were to continue to not  use my truck for the year, I would save $2,040 in fuel costs.    End of week; calculate all entries to determine how many pounds of  carbon dioxide were not emitted into the atmosphere.    How to track all this?  Maybe Rodney Cox could post a poll on the  Chico Corsa Yahoo group site?  Maybe the Enterprise Record, The  Orion, or News and Review could help by putting a poll on their web  pages? Maybe something else?    Anyway, like I said, I can't find any information on Bike Week, so  this may be something you've
already considered.  However, I thought  I would forward the idea just in case.    Thanks for allowing me to ramble on.....

Hi,
Hope you can take a look at this link
http://www.bikecommutemonth.com/index1.asp (cut and paste)
inspiring our neighbor, the Sacramento area, to pledge and ride during
the month of May. Speaking with the City of Chico last week, they are
considering creating a City of Chico Business Bike Week challenge
which would mimic this in a small way. On our civic end, we could
potentially involve individuals, organizations, bike clubs, etc. to
participate as well.
Look forward to seeing those of you who can be there at the meeting
Monday.
Pedal forward,
Karen

We can meet generally for part of the meeting and perhaps split into
our particular groups for the rest.
I leafletted the bicycles for Pancakes for Peace yesterday and we
already got 2 volunteers to help out.

crap! - I need to look at my calendar before I make statements. Usually Mondays are great. However, the 31st I'm celebrating my b-day with friends. Most likely I would be able to stop by after dinner and hopefully catch some of the meeting. And in the future can block Monday nights for meetings.

Cash strapped, and driving less

Three-quarters of Americans say rising gasoline prices have caused them financial hardship and to reconsider their driving habits, according to a new poll.

By David Goldman, CNNMoney.com staff writer

gas_prices_0319.ap.03.jpg
Braking point: U.S. drivers react to record high gas prices.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Americans are finally driving less - thanks to rising gas prices.

Seventy-two percent of respondents to a recent poll said recent price increases in gasoline have caused financial hardship for them or their households, according to a national CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Wednesday.

"For some time we've been trying to determine the breaking point for when gas prices take their toll on the consumer," said John Kilduff, an energy analyst at the trading firm MF Global. "It appears we've found that point."

And Americans expect the price of gas to keep climbing.

Of the over 1,000 American adults surveyed in the poll conducted March 14-16, 72% said it was "very likely " for gasoline to hit $4 a gallon in 2008. One in five said it was "somewhat likely" to see $4 gas.

The median price of gasoline hit a record $3.285 a gallon on Sunday and has only slipped about six-tenths of a cent since then, according to a fuel price survey conducted for the motorist group AAA. Drivers in California have to shell out more than $3.63 a gallon on average, and motorists in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii on average all had to pay more than $3.40 at the pump.

Rising fuel prices have caused most Americans to cut back on their driving. 64% say they have made some changes to their driving behavior as a result of higher gas prices, with 19% saying they have cut back on driving enough to have a major effect on their daily lives. And 5% say they have stopped driving altogether.

"Consumers have been surprisingly resilient, but it's psychologically damaging to see prices above $3.50," said Kilduff.

Gas sales have started to sink as American's curtail their driving. A recent Commerce Department report showed sales at gasoline stations, which have been bolstered recently by record-high fuel prices, tumbled 1%.

If gasoline hits an average $4.50 a gallon Americans say they will reduce the miles they drive so significantly to affect their daily lives.

If gasoline hits an average of $8 a gallon, Americans said they would quit driving altogether.

But some analysts don't expect gas to get to that point.

"That national average won't get to $4 a gallon," said Kilduff, who believes gas will peak around $3.50 on average in mid-April before coming down again. "We're in the process of getting the worst of this behind us." To top of page
