There just wasn't  much size and toughness to do it effectively.

With their two most  physical players _Ben  Eager_

opic) , out with injuries, the Hawks mostly are finesse players whose
  skills  aren't suited for _NHL_

-style  retaliation.

Second-year winger Kris Versteeg was on the ice and the  first to react as
he quickly grabbed Mitchell. But he gave away five inches and  26 pounds to
the Canucks defenseman in a skirmish that never really got off the  ground.

game during the third period with an injury,  didn't practice Thursday but
coach Joel Quenneville said both "progressed really  well overnight so it was
encouraging in that regard" and they could play  Saturday night against the
Predators.

The Toews incident raises the  question of whether the Hawks should have
retaliated for arguably their best  player being knocked out of the game on
what they all admitted was a clean  hit.

Thursday. "I don't really think it's worth it. Should someone have  grabbed
Mitchell? Versteeg had enough courage to go do that. Maybe one of our  bigger
guys should have grabbed him. It's one of those things that you're so  into the
game and something happens so quickly you don't know what to  do."

Burish and Eager know what they likely would have done as they led  the
Hawks in penalty minutes the last two seasons (Burish 214 in 2007-08 and  Eager
161 in '08-09). But until they return -- and that won't be soon as Eager
still is suffering from a concussion and Burish is rehabbing from ACL surgery
in  his right knee -- the Hawks will have to deal with other team's often
taking  runs at their skill players, legally or illegally.

"With (Eager and  Burish) out we're more of a skilled team," Kane said. "We
have to stay away from  the physical game a little bit with the fighting.
We still have some big boys.  Guys like (Troy) Brouwer and Seabrook, guys who
can stick up for themselves.  It's a tough situation. There are going to be
a lot of questions about our team  toughness when something like that
happens."

The Hawks themselves have an  answer to anyone questioning whether they are
tough enough.

"There are  enough guys in this room who will fight," defenseman _Cam
Barker_

pic)  said. "We haven't really had a heavyweight here in a while and
it  never has been an issue.

"Size and toughness, there's a lot of it in this  room. You don't
necessarily need a 6-foot-5-inch, 250-pound guy out there just  to fight."

Quenneville said toughness must come from the team across the  board.

"We all have to be committed to stick together and find ways to  deal with
that kind of thing," Quenneville said. "I still love the character we  have
as a group and how everybody does stick up for each other. These (hits) can
happen but we don't want to expect this to be occurring regularly."

Spike missed the Chicago Blackhawks game. Now in case you don't  know who Spike
O'Dell is, and that won't be listners of WGN Radio, he  was one of the radio
show host on WGN Radio 720, and for most of  this decade, his air time is
the same one that is now Gregg  Jarret's air time, which is the morning show
on WGN Radio. He and his wife  Karen was going to the Chicago Blackhawks and
Nashville Predators game, the  night before.

This is a reminder for all the Chicago Blackhawks fans out there, that
their next game is tonight. And they will be playing the Dallas Stars. The game
  can be seen on WGN TV and WGN Radio 720. This will be the first game, out
of how  many this season, that will be on WGN TV. The Chicago Blackhawks
radio crew,  will begin the pre-game at 7:20 P.M. tonight, and the game will
start on TV at  7:30, right about the start of the game. It is at the United
Center, so if you  have tickets for tonight's game, great if not you can
always make your fun at  home, put the game on TV or Radio, or have it on the
Radio and muted on the TV,  which ever way works for you.
