I got to watch the Rush lose to Colorado in person and I could not
believe how loose they played the receivers. While newcomer Jeremy
Unertl is capable of getting turnovers on defense, he also lets too
many catches happen. He's the type of defender who will get picked on
for this tendency. The defense is so soft in the secondary, that I'd
say (without looking at stats) it could be the worst I've seen in 5
years of Rush football. Since Dameon Porter and Lindsey Fleshman left
the team a few years ago, the pass coverage has been spotty, even by
high-scoring arena ball standards. The linemen do enough to get
pressure consistently on the QB's, so I don't see them as the problem.
Even with Moyer and Bleisath out, the front 3 played well in my opinion.
At the same time, I think the offense just needs to settle down and get
healthy at all positions. Butchie Ibeh is a great find and Etu looked
like his old self bringing in big catches. Of course, McMillen is
great. D'Orazio seems to be more mobile than Philyaw and just as
accurate.
Kicking is great, even without Gispert. I like the current backup
kicker. He missed the extra point, but he also hit that 53-yarder the
week before. He's got high, booming kickoffs too. The coverage teams
need to get better at tackling downfield,
