Always a short bike ride, and always a great destination!

THIS WEEK A THE CHEVERLY COMMUNITY MARKET
Saturday, August 16
8:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Cheverly Community Center
6401 Forest Road, Cheverly, MD

Partake of the usual bounty of seasonal VEGETABLES and FRUITS offered by four of our vendors: Jug Bay Market Garden, C&E Farms (plus their fresh HERBS and beautiful PLANTS), Circle C Oyster Ranch (in addition to their fabulous OYSTERS), and Clan Stewart Farms (along with their great MEATS).

Of course we'll have the yummy BREADS and BAKED TREATS from Uptown Bakers, and the delectable PIES, cookies, and other treats that debuted at the last market made by Cheverly's Claire Flintoff of Budgie Bird Kitchens!

Martha will be back with her newly batched JAMS and PRESERVES, and there will be freshly-made PASTAS and SAUCE, SPICE MIXES, delicious CHEESES, and fresh and packaged ORGANIC FAIR TRADE COFFEES.

We'll also have WINE from Elk Run Winery. Pick up a perfect pairing for summer recipes -- which you can find on the CCM website: http://www.cheverlycommunitymarket.com.

In addition, there will be fabulous handmade SOAPS and lotions from Mystic Water Soap, and beautiful POTTERY creations by Cheverly artisan Rose Fennell.

This week's featured MUSIC is by Cheverly's own Kelly and Charles, offering a fine setting to enjoy a MASSAGE by local massage therapist Teresa Williams of Touch as Art.

Not many local markets can boast such a constellation of products, talent, and service. Now in addition, Cheverly Community Market has its very own HERBALIST.  We're pleased to welcom Bevin Clare, a clinical herbalist and nutritionist living in Cheverly since 2005. She is the Herbal Division Chair in the masters of science degree program in Herbal Medicine at the Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, Maryland, where she also has a clinical practice specializing in wellness. Bevin will be at the market to offer information on uses of herbs for your health and well-being. Learn more about Bevin on theCCM  blog, http://cheverlycommunitymarket.blogspot.com
REMEMBER: If every household in Southern Maryland spent just $8.00 on locally grown farm products for 12 weeks, $54 million could be invested back into our neighboring farms and economy!

THIS WEEK A THE CHEVERLY COMMUNITY MARKET

Saturday, August 2nd
8:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Cheverly Community Center
6401 Forest Road, Cheverly, MD

If every household in Southern Maryland spent just $8.00 on locally grown farm products for 12 weeks, $54 million could be invested back into our neighboring farms and economy!

Join in the local investment at the market on Saturday. In addition to the usual bounty of seasonal VEGETABLES and FRUITS, yummy BREADS and BAKED TREATS, JAMS and PRESERVES, OYSTERS, SPICE MIXES, and delicious CHEESES, the following will be featured at the CCM this week:

  • Nicole Sylver of Sylver Spoon will return with her fabulous CUPCAKES. Order in advance and save 50 cents per cupcake. This week's flavors will be regular favorites red velvet, vanilla bean, chocolate and new for this week and only available with advance orders: lemon! The buttercream choices are cream cheese, vanilla, chocolate ganache, and citrus zest. The price is $2.00 per cupcake for all advance orders with a four-cupcake minimum. Call 202-492-1480 or email nsylver1@... to place an order.

  • Simple Pleasures ICE CREAM will be bringing peach and peach amaretto, as well as black raspberry, berries 'n cream (black currents and blueberries), lemon ginger, and chocolate almond.

  • FRESH AND PACKAGED ORGANIC FAIR TRADE COFFEES will be available at the Cheverly United Methodist Church booth. Also, back by popular demand, the Church will be selling DUTCH GARDEN BULBS. Order now for bulbs to be planted this fall and enjoyed in the spring. The bulbs have received rave reviews for their quality and beauty year after year.

  • And relax with a MASSAGE! Teresa Williams will be at the CCM with her massage chair. Visit her website at www.touchasart.com.

Visit the CCM website at www.cheverlycommunitymarket.com to get inspired. We'll be featuring an original, local recipe -- zuchinni latkes with Cherry Glen goat cheese and Martha's pepper jelly.  If you weren't one of the lucky ones who got a taste of Cathy Wintermyer's creation at the potluck last Friday, she's sharing her recipe for you to try at home. The website provides the full list of vendors and details on special features.

And, our market produce farmer, Scott Hertzberg, offered this link to a recent Washington Post article on the effects of our cool, wet spring on local crops and what to expect at markets in August: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/24/AR2008072403538.html?nav=hcmodule.

A short bike ride, but a great destination!

We've got a great roster of vendors for the Cheverly Community Market (CCM) this week to help you meet the BUY LOCAL CHALLENGE from June 19-27 (http://www.buy-local-challenge.com/). The Governor kicks off the challenge on Friday at the State House, and every county has issued proclamations in support.

Help Prince George's County come through with flying colors by stocking up at the CCM this Saturday, July 19, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Vendors and products will include:

Jug Bay Market Farm and Garden: Including tomatoes, basil, corn, beans, potatoes, melons, and cucumbers.

C&E Farms:  Potted herbs -- We encourage you to buy a pot of one of Emma's wonderful varieties of mint. She has chocolate mint, apple mint, orange mint, spearmint, and peppermint.  Here's a spot for you to look around and get inspired to "experi- mint" this week!

Circle C Oysters:  Rich has become quite the media celebrity recently. People have driven from as far as the Shenandoah's to his operation in Southern Maryland to buy a couple dozen oysters! We are only one of two markets he attends. Be sure to include Oysters in your menus this week. Here's a link with great recipes: http://southernfood.about.com/od/oysterrecipes/Oyster_Recipes_Recipes_Using_Oysters.htm

Clan Stewart Farm:  Try their summer sausage or bacon to fix a stellar sandwich. Or try ribs, steaks or hamburger and have a memorable cookout.
Stanton Mills: Enjoy their specialty milled flours and bread mixes.
Cherry Glenn Goat Cheese:  A market favorite that stands alone with quality bread or use it in salads, pizzas, and more.  Pick one or two of these recipes to try this week:
http://allrecipes.com/Search/Recipes.aspx?WithTerm=goat+cheese

Pair your oysters and goat cheese with a Pinot Gris from Elk Run Winery, a new wine they are introducing. Or try their Maryland Merlot or Cabernet Franc with barbecued meats and grilled veggies.

And that's just for starters! This week's market also will feature:

Brooks Brand Salsa
Uptown Bakers
Moctec Chips and Tortillas
Martha's Jams
Sylver Spoon Cupcake bar
Krishon Chocolate
Simple Pleasures Ice Cream
Tia's Lemonade
Mystic Waters Soap
Cheverly Methodist Church Coffee

Join the festivities and shop among the friendliest folk around, get a great cup of coffee, and enjoy fine music by Kelly and Charles!

AND PURCHASE TICKETS FOR THE COMMUNITY MARKET BENEFIT POTLUCK, FRIDAY, JULY 25, from 7:00-10:00 p.m.

Anyone up for a Meet and Greet ride on Saturday May 31st at 10:00 AM?
I would like to meet at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park near the
bridge. This is a good excuse to get the bikes out, fill the tires,
and meet some club members. I will be there either way at 10 and will
wait about 10 minutes to see if anyone shows up. This will not be a
long ride so don't worry about distance. I will be the one on the
Dahon folding bike.

Hope to see you there,

Thanks for the message. I'm glad to see that the Cheverly Bike Group is reactivating. I would love to do some local rides with neighbors. I moved to this area 3.5 years ago and have yet to get out on my bike, so am glad to have some incentive to dust off the handlebars and get those flat tires inflated and get back on the roads!

Obviously, I'm not yet ready to lead any trips, but I could join Saturday morning rides. I also could join some weekday evenings for shorter jaunts.

I look forward to meeting members of the group.

Hi- Our family loves weekend bike rides and we have hit the trails
all around the metro region that we have found in various guide
books, and look forward to more biking this spring! This past
weekend, we did a portion of the C+O from Riley's Lock up towards
White's Ferry. I would love to see more families getting into biking.
It's such great fun. We are excited about the Cheverly club and look
forward to meeting fellow neighbor bikers. We have gone on most of
the metro region's trails (Baltimore and Annapolis is one that is
close to Cheverly, just out route 50) and is flat and very pleasant.
Not sure if all trails need to be in biking distance from Cheverly or
if people like to drive and then bike; but we are interested in
learning new trails, and repeating some favorites. We are up for new
adventures in biking and look forward to rolling! When's the next
ride?

First I would like to welcome all the new members that joined during
the cold winter months while we were hibernating. Admittedly not much
goes on when things are cold or rainy. Now that the rain has stopped
and the weather is warmer, I wanted to get some dialog started about
where/when people would prefer to ride. In the past, most of our
rides have started at the Bladensburg Waterfront Park (North East
Branch trail), mainly because it is nice and flat, and Cheverly has so
many hills. Starting rides at Bladensburg Park means people have to
be able to get their bikes there, either by riding from Cheverly, or
on a bike rack on their cars. Usually rides were Saturday mornings
around 9:30 am.

I would like to do some rides in the evenings, some in Cheverly, some
at Bladensburg Waterfront, and other places like The National
Arboretum. Please feel free to post ideas to the message board and
feel free to volunteer to lead rides. So far, Jarriel and I have been
the ones leading rides.

I would like to encourage everyone to get involved. I would also like
to remind people that we are a casual biking club, we have no problem
accommodating those who haven't ridden their bikes in years :) No
pressure!
