UltiSpace has put up photos (clicked by Synamen Studios) from the Chennai Heat '09 tournament on their website. UltiSpace is a new social networking site specifically for Ultimate players worldwide. There are articles by coaches and players and ex-players and lots of photos.
These were the results from the Manila Spirits tournament! Serendiscity came 30th and not 31st like I thought before! :-)

Subject: Thrillah in Manila recap
This is going out to Discheads, Asian Ultimate, BC, and all Thrillah team captains. And it's a long email.
So it was a quiet weekend. Not very eventful at all. We had a few people over for some beers, hardly anything to talk about. Lance wore a cool mask. That was the highlight really.
9 Open teams, 4 Women's teams, and a massive 32 Mixed teams. 700 participants. Thank you so very much to all of you who came to Manila and helped us make the 2009 WFDF Manila Spirits AOUCC such a successful tournament. We're still receiving a lot of very positive feedback, thank you to all of you who have sent us messages to let us know how much fun you had. We had a terrific time hosting you and can't thank you enough for your support. Rest assured that we'll be taking your suggestions on board for Spirits 2010.
Sorry for the delay in getting this out. We've been piecing together what happened, who won what. We, the board, were just as drunk as you were. If there are any corrections to be made, please do let me know. And we're still trying to figure out who the pool B female MVP was. Help! And the fourth Callahan.
Let's start with the parties. Thursday was chill, as it was meant to be. Friday saw people getting their groove on with some great beats and funky head wear. The Saturday party was a hedonist's heaven. The Sunday party on the field was absolute carnage.
Check out some of the cool Z-Day costumes we saw at the Saturday night party:
Unfortunately we don't have many pics of the Sunday sh*tshow. We all went pretty loopy with the mawlt likah and brandy.
Following is part of a press release I put together. If you'd like to know more about what happened, please do feel free to email me. After the press release are the results. Standings, party awards, everything. Except for the pool B MVP and fourth Callahan.
We do hope to see you all back in 2010!
Rick

"The governing body of Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines, the Philippine Ultimate Association, or the PUA, hosted its annual Manila Spirits tournament last November 6 to 8 on the fields of Alabang Country Club. Manila Spirits 2009 was much larger than past years as the PUA accepted the opportunity to host the 2009 World Flying Disc Federation Asia-Oceania Ultimate Club Championships (2009 WFDF AOUCC for short), to run concurrently with Manila Spirits.
The tournament consisted of three divisions. The AOUCC Open division, the AOUCC Women's division, and the AOUCC Mixed/Manila Spirits division.
The AOUCC Open division, comprising of all men's teams, and the AOUCC Women's division were both run on November 6. The Open division consisted of nine teams in total, with the Philippines, Japan, Australia and China being represented. After a long, hard day of play, the gold medal in the Open division was won by Japan's Link, a team made up of businessmen who have continued playing Ultimate since their college days. It was an amazing feat considering the thin roster Link sent over. Link, seeded second, won the gold medal 11-6 over our very own Boracay Dragons, who were seeded third. The bronze was won by another incredible Japanese team, the Chukyo University Flippers, who beat Chinese team CUUP for the medal.
The Women's division was played out between four teams, with China, the Philippines, Thailand and Australia being represented. The gold medal was won by Pilipinas Bebots, formed by the Team Philippines women. They took the title over D-CUUP, a very strong team made up of China's best female Ultimate talent. The Boracay Dragonitas took home the bronze medal, beating Thailand in their play-off.
The AOUCC Mixed division was run together with Manila Spirits Mixed on November 7 and 8. Every available slot was filled, with thirty-two teams from Manila, the provinces, and the Asia Oceanic region submitting strong rosters. Seven hundred players participated, the largest Manila Spirits ever by far.
Last year's champion Team Philippines was seeded first, last year's runner-up Black Flag was seeded second, and Australian team Sizzle was seeded third.
All thirty-two teams played four games on their first day of play. The teams were then separated into their respective pools (A, B, C, or D) for the next day, based on their first day results.
The pool A championship was eventually won by Black Flag, a team made up of Ultimate freaks from around the globe. They defeated Singapore team Shiok 13-3 in the final. Shiok surprised everyone this year with their strong roster and tremendous athletic ability.
Despite being overall tournament champion, Black Flag participated in the Manila Spirits Mixed division, not the WFDF sanctioned AOUCC Mixed division, meaning AOUCC Mixed participants Shiok won the AOUCC Mixed division gold medal. Team Philippines won the silver medal and the Boracay Dragons won the bronze.
Local team Sunken Pleasure won pool B. Pool C was won by Dumaguete Extreme. Davao Mulatto won the pool D championship.
Of course, Filipino hospitality shone through the entire weekend. A great time was had by all and many teams have already indicated that they will be sure to return for Manila Spirits 2010.
WFDF president Jonathan Potts came from Australia to oversee proceedings, along with WFDF director Morooka Fumio of Japan."

No, I don't have a video of any of the games unfortunately. I agree about the fun part, but just don't know how to implement it in the Chennai tournaments because we play till night 9.30 atleast. And we start at 6.00am.. because of the heat.
Any suggestions regarding that is welcome!
Jaidip,
Ultimate discussions are always welcome!
I was wondering if all team captains should agree to improve the men / women ration 5:2 for all the tournaments from next year. This may be a good first step to getting the ratios to the international levels.
What say?

It seems like this tournament was of a 'high' standard and many of the things you mentioned brings back memories of my days in UK ultimate tournaments :)
We should definitely set some time aside at CS '09 to discuss these and many more points about Indian Ultimate; ideas for an agenda?

Hi guys,
I had gone to Manila, Philippines last weekend for the Manila Spirits mixed Ultimate Frisbee tournament. I had a LOT of fun.. and learnt a lot.Our team probably came last, but we were awarded the Spirit award!
Some of my observations are as below..
a) The women were the differentiating factor in a lot of the games. With the ratio for co-ed games being 4:3, the presence of great women players is key to playing well. This is the standard ration for Mixed Games (co-ed games) at international tournaments. It can be 4 women or 3 women.. some teams use the 4 women ratio if it works to their advantage. The Offensive team sets the ratio and the defensive team has to match it.
b) Every team had at least one woman handler at all times on the field! And when i saw women handlers.. I don't mean handlers for the sake of being one. Women capable of hucking deep / making I/O throws / making bailout cuts / making fast breaks / fast give-n-gos / etc.
c) We all need to work on our stamina & bench strength. Every team came with about 15-20 people. We had 5 games on the first day and 3 games on the next. And everyone was totally tired at the end of it.
d) Every team had a minimum of 6 women. Most typical composition was 8.
e) Every team threw a cup / zone on us initially because we were taller than most of them (other asians are generally shorter than Indians and Westerners). Once they found that a team did not know how to play the cup (like my team), they mostly used only zone defense. Which means that there have to be 3 players on the offensive line and 3 on the defensive line.. atleast.
f) 90% of the teams ran a horizontal stack and it was a learning experience for me to see how effectively they used it! We should learn how to play against it.. if not to play it on our offense as well.
g) The tournament was all about the party ! :-). Every evening there were crazy parties.. unlimited free alcohol, etc. Great stuff. If I'd go back, it's more for the fun time overall.. than just for the competition at the tournament!
h) The mark on the disc was almost always VERY tight. You cannot make a single pass without doing a full stretch and effective fakes.
i) Lots of the games (especially the closely contested games) were all stop and go games because of strict enforcement of travel / pick calls.
j) Drop when receiving the pull was considered a drop.. no excuses. Throws going out of bounds in any directions were either taken from the lines or from the brick mark (20 yards in front of the end-zone).
k) Every player had forehands and backhands which they used during the games... without exceptions. The accuracy of the throws was a different issue though. The moment the teams figured that someone didn't have a throw, they effectively let that person get the pass.. and them clamped down on the person and forced turn-overs.
l) Side-line support was the 8th man for every team. Every competitive team used it effectively. They all had assigned men standing on both sides of the fold and towards both end zones calling defense and offense. This was irrespective of zone or man offence / defense. We really need to learn this. There was never a point where a man was uncovered for more than 2 seconds because the side-lines were very vigilant and calling out poaches, free men, etc.
m) Every team had both the inward cut threat as well as the deep cut threat. All teams used the inward brilliantly! Cuts were extremely sharp and well practiced.
Gopi (who also participated in the tourney) too will write down his observations and what he thinks we need to work on.
cheers,
Manu

So if team captains could please fill it out with names ASAP, that would be grand. If there is any uncertainty on attendance still please let me know and I'll help to coordinate pickup numbers from here. Since we have 3 teams in Ahmedabad this should be very do-able.
The format for the tournament will be slightly different in that although it is outdoors on grass we are playing 5-on-5 but with all the same rules of outdoors rules. I know this might sound a bit crazy but it should help with those teams who are low on numbers and efficient use of field space, combined with loads more running :P
We would like to hear more comments and ideas from the experienced players about how to make the format up and adaptable from standard UPA outdoors rules so please use this email thread as the starting point or email us directly, whichever is easiest and makes sense.
Watch this space for more blasts and media releases soon!

a) All teams were SO coordinated, it was amazing. No team survived based on a single super-star's performance. Every player played their part. If you asked me if any team had a player who stood out and won the game for them single handedly.. I wouldn't be able to point out to even one like that!
The max no. of assists that a player on the star teams got in a game, was probably only 3. (assist = handler passing to the person who scores). Similarly for max. no. of Ds, and scores. Which meant that every player contributed almost equally to the game.
b) The post-game bonding Spirit games were CRAZY. It was fun / hilarious. A lot of them were even raunchy!
c) Black Flag from China won the tournament. They were incredible to watch. Serendiscity (the team we played on) won the Spirit award.
d) Many of the tournament organizers and WFDF (world flying disc federation) are really expecting to see an Indian team next year at Singapore.
