Subject: Joy of Giving week
To: Bala <balakrishnanv@...>
The Joy of Giving Week is a new national movement that aims to engage every Indian citizen in "giving back" to society in a way that s/he chooses. From a billionaire writing a large cheque to a slumdweller sharing 1 out of his 3 rotis, the Week hopes to have at least 2 crore Indians engage in "acts of giving" during Sept 27-Oct 3 this year. The Week is an open platform for people to give what they choose- money, time, skills or resources, and we hope it will grow to become a "festival" that unites India in the years to come. The Week is co-ordinated by GiveIndia, a nonprofit that pioneered the charity angle in the Mumbai and Delhi marathons, and currently channels Rs27cr p.a. to over 200 credible NGOs all over India.
Several corporates, celebrities and organisations have already finalised awareness, volunteering and fundraising events that they will organise during the Joy of Giving Week, viz-
1. A "Design for Giving" challenge that will get children from over 10,000 government & private schools to "think, design, prototype and implement" solutions to India's social problems during the Week. The initiative is being co-ordinated by Riverside School, in association with Stanford Design School, the National Institute of Design and IDEO (the world's leading design firm).
2. A massive 25-city clothes donation campaign by Goonj that aims to have lacs of people donating over 1crore units of old clothes, toys and materials, which will be used as part of a "clothes for work" programme in rural India through Goonj's network of NGOs.
3. A "College Joyfest" that hopes to have 300+ college campuses in India partner with local NGOs to hold cultural festivals that promote awareness and sensitivity among youth, while also being fundraisers for the partner NGOs. The initiative is being led by JAM Magazine and is being supported by MTV.
4. "Battle of the Buffet" events by the 5* Hotels of Chennai and Hyderabad, where they provide their most lavish spreads free of cost to NGOs of the city, who work together as a city and sell donor passes to raise funds for their work.
5. A large organ donation campaign by Apollo Hospitals and a campaign to engage children in giving by Parle are on the cards. The Park Hotels group will host fundraising events at all their hotels free of cost, as will the Oxford Bookstore chain. Companies like Makemytrip, Canon, Google, Oriental Cuisines, ITC and many others have committed support.
6. The Wildlife Conservation Trust has agreed to match all donations made for certain wildlife conservation projects during the Week, upto Rs1crore.
7. Celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar, Nandita Das, AR Rahman, Ayesha Takia, Mini Mathur, South stars like Suriya, Shriya Saran, Madhavan & Khushboo, Amala and Nagarjuna, as well as directors like Mani Rathnam, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap, etc. have promised to support the initiative.
We had a hugely successful press launch in Mumbai on June 3, covered by 22 news channels and over 40 publications, and an equally well attended press meet in Chennai on June 30, with Suriya & Shriya Saran pledging their support.
8. We are also discussing with Exnora Intl if they will do a 'Clean your city' campaign during the week
