Thank you to everyone who supported me with your emails advice and good wishes. The interview went quite well largely in part to the emails. At this point the only thing that could possibly hold me up on being appointed would be if a conflict exist of two or more of the continuing board members being residence outside Olympia city limits or live in the urban growth area like me. Johnathan Turlove from parks and recreation did not think that would be an issue so I will know for sure by Friday perhaps.

Many of you know about my project for building a BMX and mountain bike park in the Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater area. I have submitted an application to the City of Olympia to be part of the all volunteer Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (http://www.ci.olympia.wa.us/cityservices/par/PRAC/) . The Committee is responsible for advising the city council on maters of projects, programs and plans relating to parks planning for a three year term.
My interest in serving on this board goes beyond the bike park project. I feel that the Olympia youth between the ages of 12 and 18 that are not interested in traditional sports and who can not afford programs offered at the Olympia Center are under represented in parks planning right now. Several youth centers have opened and closed over the past few years in downtown Olympia. As a father of two girls entering this age group I plan to serve on the board to represent this under served group as well as help make Olympia's great parks even better for everyone. The city, county, and state are all entering a period when budgets will be tight and many programs will be in question. I feel that my ability to think outside the box on issues could be of great benefit to the parks department and the residence who use them. In preparation for this job I have thoroughly reviewed the all of the Olympia codes, plans, and standards (http://www.ci.olympia.wa.us/citygovernment/codes/) to better familiarize myself with the larger picture of park functions. As many of you know I am a student at The Evergreen State College and am continuing to focus my education on public service.
I have an interview on Tuesday afternoon with city council members Jeff Kingbury jkingsbu@... (Mayor Pro Tem), Craig Ottavelli cottavel@... and Rheneda Strub rstrub@... who are the portion of the city council making public recommendations of appointment to all of Olympia's advisory boards. I am one of six residence interviewing for 4 positions. We only have a 10 minute interview to impress upon the council members that we are the best for the job. I would like to ask that you send an email of support to the above mentioned council members for me in serving on this committee.

Oh I forgot my favorite quote from this guy back when he opposed the Vulnerable Roadway Users Bill meant to give bike rides, inline skaters, skatebarders, and pedestrians some protection.
“On the way to work this morning, coming to an intersection, I stopped,
and here comes a bicycle right next to me, right through the
intersection…and that is a daily thing…and until we get a handle on
that and hold them accountable….they’re creating a hazard out there.
They’re on a public highway that’s designed for motor vehicles, not for
those other uses…and to put everybody who’s driving a vehicle into a
situation like this…I think it’s not right.” Rep. Wayne Krieger from Jonathan Maus

Has anyone read this? If it passes everyone riding a bike on the roads of Oregon would have to register it like a car every two years for $54 a bike! This is intended to pay for bike lanes and such. Ummmmm don't the riders in OR already do that with income, property and vehicle licensing taxes (for those riders with cars)????
I have a possible $432 worth of registrations to pay in my living room. Granted I don't live in Oregon but read the fine print in the exemptions. We would not be exempt from the registration law when riding in OR unless we came from a district (city, county or state) that also has a registration law. So if you are going to tour in OR this year and this thing passes get ready to pay $54 in addition to your ride cost. Oh ya, I may be wrong but the way I read the exemptions you would have to register your trailer too.
“This is an opportunity for the bicyclists to start contributing to our
roads,” he said. “If you want to have something that everybody is going
to use, than everybody needs to contribute to what’s there… if there
were not bicycles we wouldn’t need bicycle lanes.” “Talk about a time when you need some revenue for transportation…bikes
have used the roads in this state forever and have never contributed a
penny. The only people that pay into the system are those people who
buy motor vehicle licenses and registration fees.” “We’ve put millions and million into bike lanes,” he said. And then,
repeating his opinion that it’s a matter of equity, he added, “The
people that get that service provided for them, they need to
contribute…these people are sort of sitting on the sidelines.” Representative Wayne Krieger Taken from an article by Jonathan Maus (http://bikeportland.org/2009/03/06/a-conversation-with-rep-krieger-about-his-bike-registration-bill/)

Many of you have heard my spiel about wanting to get a bike park in the Olympia, Tumwater, Lacey area going. In a dream world we would have fun stuff for road, mountain and BMX riders of all types. A Colonnade, North SeaTac BMX, South SeaTac Jumps, Merymoore Velodrome and more in one spot would be great but one step at a time. I have a meeting with Oly Parks tomorrow to start some dialogue. The issue is I need to be able to tell the cities WHO wants WHAT.
No matter what type of riding you do please go to the project blog (http://olybikepark.blogspot.com/) and answer the poll questions on the right to help. PLEASE! Oh and become a follower of the blog to get updates too.
Derik at Joyride and Jim Grahm FOCF brought this to my attention.
On January 19, 2009, we announced a voluntary recall of 14 U.S and 4
Canadian products including CLIF Bar, CLIF Builder's, CLIF MOJO, CLIF
Kid Organic ZBaR and LUNA Bar, in the U.S. and Canada because the
peanut butter in those products was sourced, for a limited period of
time, from the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is a
manufacturer and supplier of peanut butter for many food companies and
manufacturers.
PCA is under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
for a recent Salmonella outbreak thought to be caused by tainted
peanut butter. In light of this investigation, and with an abundance
of caution, Clif Bar & Company has enacted a voluntary recall. We take
the health and safety of our consumers very seriously.

An Evening with the Metal Cowboy: Joe Kurmaskie
Tuesday December 9, 7:00 p.m.
Seattle REI, 222 Yale Street
$5.00 (Cascade members are 2 for 1!)
For more information, call Cascade at: 206-522-3222
Cascade Bicycle Club is proud to present what's become a don't miss,
annual evening of humor and humanity to kick off your holiday season.
Author and performer Joe Kurmaskie never reads from his books (yes, he
CAN read, but we digress). Instead, the Metal Cowboy commands a stage
with a multimedia performance that's by turns stand-up comedy, digital
slideshow, rant, social commentary, audience interaction and Irish
Bard-style storytelling… It's truly an evening you'll talk about long
after he's been extradited by the proper authorities!
This year he'll bring another rowdy evening of slides and
storytelling, humor and humanity, focused on adventures in Northern
Italy, recaps and new stories from the family trip pulling a caravan
of five family members cross the length of Canada and previews for an
upcoming Africa adventure. Joe will take you on one helluva a travel
adventure without having to leave your zipcode.
This evening he'll also add to and ask audience members to contribute
to his popular "You might be a cyclist" routine. Bring your favorite
"You might be a cyclist punch line to share. Prizes, raffles for swag,
book signing and way, way more.
"A modern day Mark Twain on two wheels." - USA Today.
"David Sedaris trapped in the body of Lance Armstrong." - Boston Globe
I recently ran into a local asking" Maybe a random post but started
riding a bit more recently and had an
old knee injury flare up half way through a ride two days ago, had to
bail out, which was frustrating. So, I'm still a semi-newbee to the
area, any one have doctor recommendations, a doc who won't just say,
STOP RIDING? :-) Thanks.
Erica"
I know we have folks in the club who do this type of medical work.
Names anyone?

CBC website is up! Take a look!
The city of Lacey is planning some major construction rework for
College Street. The plan does include bike lanes however the plan
calls for 3 foot wide lanes. For those who have ever commuted and had
to deal with an 18 inch drain that wants to kill you in a 36 inch bike
lane on a crazy busy street you know the dangers of this. The state
DOT guidelines calls for a 4 foot lane or wider on a road like this.
Although it is not law or mandated it would be nice to see the city
follow a guideline designed for the safety of cyclist and motorist.
Bob Duffy who is a member of the CBC as well as works with the Bicycle
Alliance of Washington has drafted an excellent letter to the Mayor
and City Council that he plans to read at the next meeting which I
think is Thursday the 13th. A show of other Lacey cyclist to simply
give support or speak on this or other issues may help. Here are the
guidelines and other info regarding the city council meetings.
