Has anyone read this? If it passes everyone riding a bike on the roads of Oregon would have to register it like a car every two years for $54 a bike! This is intended to pay for bike lanes and such. Ummmmm don't the riders in OR already do that with income, property and vehicle licensing taxes (for those riders with cars)????

I have a possible $432 worth of registrations to pay in my living room. Granted I don't live in Oregon but read the fine print in the exemptions. We would not be exempt from the registration law when riding in OR unless we came from a district (city, county or state) that also has a registration law. So if you are going to tour in OR this year and this thing passes get ready to pay $54 in addition to your ride cost. Oh ya, I may be wrong but the way I read the exemptions you would have to register your trailer too.

“This is an opportunity for the bicyclists to start contributing to our roads,” he said. “If you want to have something that everybody is going to use, than everybody needs to contribute to what’s there… if there were not bicycles we wouldn’t need bicycle lanes.” “Talk about a time when you need some revenue for transportation…bikes have used the roads in this state forever and have never contributed a penny. The only people that pay into the system are those people who buy motor vehicle licenses and registration fees.”  “We’ve put millions and million into bike lanes,” he said. And then, repeating his opinion that it’s a matter of equity, he added, “The people that get that service provided for them, they need to contribute…these people are sort of sitting on the sidelines.” Representative Wayne Krieger Taken from an article by Jonathan Maus (http://bikeportland.org/2009/03/06/a-conversation-with-rep-krieger-about-his-bike-registration-bill/)
