The city of Lacey is planning some major construction rework for
College Street. The plan does include bike lanes however the plan
calls for 3 foot wide lanes. For those who have ever commuted and had
to deal with an 18 inch drain that wants to kill you in a 36 inch bike
lane on a crazy busy street you know the dangers of this. The state
DOT guidelines calls for a 4 foot lane or wider on a road like this.
Although it is not law or mandated it would be nice to see the city
follow a guideline designed for the safety of cyclist and motorist.
Bob Duffy who is a member of the CBC as well as works with the Bicycle
Alliance of Washington has drafted an excellent letter to the Mayor
and City Council that he plans to read at the next meeting which I
think is Thursday the 13th. A show of other Lacey cyclist to simply
give support or speak on this or other issues may help. Here are the
guidelines and other info regarding the city council meetings.
