Hi all,
I've noted and interesting (disappointing) phenomena. It seems that
when regular scotch tape comes in contact with finished carbon fiber
it damages the finish.
I've seen this twice on my FSA K-wings. Each time the bike was in
for service and the service ticket ID number was taped to the
unwrapped portion of the bars.
The first time it happened it looked like the glue from the tape
just came off on the bar. I found that it was in fact not the glue
but a real blemish on the surface of the bar.
I attempted to buff the blemish out but was not able to completely
remove it. The blemish did buff up but it's still visible. I
attributed the blemish to some kind of corrosive being dripped on
the bar and then the tape inadvertently being placed over the
blemish. Well, long story short, the bike was again in for service
at a different (I was out of town) shop. They also taped the service
ticket ID to the bare bar surface (other side). You guessed it. When
they pulled the tape off I had a brand new blemish. Perhaps one of
you CF gurus out there can explain this phenomena.
In the mean time, make your LBS aware of the issue if you have bare
CF bars.
